@lasersailor - and you think these indy cars AREN"T ugly?!? they're ugly as fuck, you want to see what an indy car should look like go look at the circa 1999 - 2000 CART cars.
it's just as well hornish nicked it, being an established driver and former champ. indycar racing, particularly IRL form and the 500 have had a huge credibility issue since '96 and a 19 year old rookie winning this race would have (sub-conciously at least) made the 500 a less legitimate/prestigious achievement
@28jaguar You are possible right if a no-name rookie 19yr old would have one it...but I think the opposite would hold true if Marco wouldn't have one it.... Mario, Michael, now Marco?? It would have added to the prestige of the 500 having the youngest member of the legendary Andretti's win the 500!!! Are you kidding, it would have been yet another Andretti as the Indy 500 winner, and another Andretti's face of the trophy....
@cap10moman yeah, i get your pov. the andretti name on the winners trophy again wouldnt look out of place. however, i wonder if your pov is all about adding to the indy 500 story rather than protecting the integrity of the 500 being the hardest/most intense single car race on earth (in theory anyway) this isn't the ausfford series/scca fford runoffs isn't? what on earth is a 19 y/o (or 23) rookie even doing threatening to win it?
@28jaguar In Theory? It is, Monaco is 2nd(Daytona comes in at 3rd). And You're right, my POV is about adding to the story of the 500, which is also it's prestige (or integrity for that matter). Like this year a rookie lost it on the 4th corner of the final lap. He came on camera and said, "I'm bummed that I didn't win, but 2nd is okay with me for my rookie season....I just feel like I let my team down." Marco's rookie statement, "You're either first or you're nothing". Then Walked Away.....
@cap10moman to make it worse, as far as i'm aware, since this race, marco hasnt really kicked on hasnt he? he may be a capable driver but he isnt beast isnt he? franchitti, power, they should all be worried about him by now but, i suspect, theyre not. hes just a name, a male danica patrick so to speak (only marco looks more like a girl! hehehe)
@28jaguar Ok, I thought we were talking about the 500, but since you brought the whole series in, that's a different story. Has Powers or Frachitti (little bitch) been invited to try-out for F1?? NOPE! How about Marco's record at Indy...6 years there, and 3 of those years were top 3 finishes. Franchitti...I don't know how many years he's been there, but at least 9, and he's had 2 top-3 finishes. Yes they need to be afraid of Marco (he's got racing blood in him), especially at the 500.......
@28jaguar Oh and the only reason Marco's in the IRL right now is because he hasn't won the 500(his own words). As soon as he wins it (not IF he wins it), he's off to F1! The prestige of the race has been built on drivers that drive to win....not on drivers that drive to help their team! That's what the people you talk about do....When Marco is at Indy, he drives to win!!! Just like his father and grandfather....whether that means "closing the door" on a teammate, or pushing passed the limit.
@cap10moman we are going to have agree to disagree on this. i just dont like seeing 19/23 y/o rookies winning this race, ok? could not care less what their name is. i meant in theory "at least", irl 500s have never had a strong depth in drivers as far as im aware. youve been following irl/500 closer than i have and youve made it clear youre a marco fan, my comments werent meant to pinch a nerve. had a look at his record on wiki, inc indy, hasnt kicked on i said? that is emabarrassing...
@28jaguar You've obviously never actually been to the 500 (and if you have, it's been once or twice). When Graham Rahall (spell??), was leading this years 500 the entire stands were cheering!! Name has a lot to do with it. And just like Graham, Marco's genes skipped a generation (although it's hard to say that since Micheal won the 500 as well). He was created and put on this earth to drive F1, just like his Gradfather! Just look at his absolute DOMINATION on road courses prior to the IRL.
@cap10moman err...i was done with this thread, you go in your directon and i'll go mine but, "Marco's genes skipped a generation (although it's hard to say that since Michael won the 500 as well)."...i'd like to know when michael won the 500?...make sure you let me know when marco becomes a serious f1 driver.
@28jaguar I stand corrected...I was thinking back to that race with Mears, and mistakenly "rememberd" Andretti winning it (I was only 4 years old at the time). After looking online, you are correct that Michael has never won it (although he holds the record for most laps led). So I guess my little side quote would be irrelevant....Genes do skip a generation.....And you'll have to wait at least another year for me to tell you about Marco and F1...he's gotta win the 500 first.....
@cap10moman...no one should call him a pro racing driver with what he has "achieved". worse than i thought, i was only joking with the patrick comparison but he really is a male danica patrick (or even a female danica patrick!) why bother even defending him? "after" he wins indy there no way a serious f1 team is going to take him, thanks to his dad he wont even be touching a mclaren! franchitti (is he a little bitch now?) tested a jaguar 10 years ago, power a minardi. good luck with it though!
@28jaguar And as I recall, Frachitti was only a "warm-up" driver in F1. Marco was invited to "try-out" for F1!! And he did amazingly well!! He was something like a second off the pole sitter (don't remember his name or the track), and did it at 19yrs old (having never driven an F1 car before). Marco drives his Indy car like it's an F1 sometimes and that's why he's got some DNF's, then he tries to back off for the next race, that's why he's got some low finishes. But he's on where it counts.
The reason Marco didn't win in 06 was because he lifted on the last lap through 1 and 2 eventhough he had the car to go flatout. Losing a ONE SECOND gap and ultimately the race, what a shame.
I had been going since 1991, and took a friend of mine to this race who had never been there. He's been hooked on Indy ever since. Great race, great finish, and absolutely ideal weather that day. Can't wait for May.
Penske was right, Sam, on the restart zig zagged like 4-5 times and passed a sheeet load of cars on the front stretch. If he doest do that, Andrettis finish 1-2
Why are F1 fans so stick it up their ass so much that F1 is the best racing??? they should see this...this is classic racing....the best in the world.
@aaronkimi86 Ignorant asshole. Most F1 fans are not ONLY fans of F1. They watch all kinds of motorsport. Real race fans appreciating good racing, no matter where it is, and F1 is full of real race fans.
@aaronkimi86 You're welcome. Glad I could help with your sadness, but I can't help you with your ignorance. You will have to figure out on your own why comparing oval racing to road course racing is ridiculous and that indy cars on road courses are more processional than F1 races, especially this year.

I was rooting for Michael and Marco towards the end of the race. For all their struggles, that family deserved another victory at Indianapolis. Alas, it wasn't to be. But damn was it close! I was in turn 4 and I couldn't tell who won. I was disappointed, but Sam drove the wheels off the car that day. He deserved to win.

I remember all the trouble Sam had in the pits. I also remember jumping up and down in my living room rooting for Sam to win. Oh what a day! Sam please come back to IndyCar.
I was in turn three when this happened. We did not know who won because the geniuses incharge of the jumbo-tron left it on Marco's onboard so we had to wait for Tom Carnagie to catch his breath to find out who the winner was.
that was an amazing race. i still can remember that day. and those final laps were great!!!! i don´t know how to describe it. one of the best indy races ever. too bad marco lose the race but he is such a good driver and never block hornish lane. i can only hope he can have his chance this year.
I watch this and it still makes me sick!My last race my dad and I ever watched together!
