To hear this in person is a experiance that you will nevor forget.......I am a real friend and fan of Billy Joe Shaver,, From Dixie in Miss where the Rebels Are '''''''''''''Honeybaby and George
We had several of those old flat-fendered Jeeps on the Ranch in Montana when I was a lad. They'd go back into the darnedest places in the timber way back in the hills. The heaters never worked and they'd only go 45 mph on the blacktop, but they was all we had. Bill Joe get's it all right once again.
my mom ,from the backwoods of central mississippi , told me this too country for her once . i want this played at my wake , so's too remember to be singing it when i stand in judgement
I'd really like to thank all those who have taken time to comment, most of which very much in the positive. I put this vid together when recovering from a surgery and thus, had the time. Gonna have to try and put another one together I suppose! Just so damn good to know how many Shaver fans are out there. He won't be with us forever, so need to appreciate him even more now!
Ah I loved this! I might be doing a documentary here in Dublin, Ireland, on a guy called N.C Lawlor who toured with this guy and I recommend checking him out on youtube.
NOW,IT DON'T GET NO MORE COUNTRIER THAN BILLY JOE SHAVER! Thanks For Posting! I Agree With Everyone This Is What Kind Of Country Music Should Be On Radio Because This Is"Real Country".
if you can find it,i highly recomend his cd salt of the earth. he' got a web site with a lot of his cds for sale. i saw him with eddy before he od. one of the best shows i ever been to, little hole in wall bar in atlanta. only had about 50 people in it. hogman
Billy Joe gave a tape to see if I wanted to record anything on it. This song was on it. Of course I wanted to record them all but didn't have the money. I'm grateful I got to meet and talk with this legend on numerous occasions. And just as grateful I got to watch Eddy play up close and personal. RIP Eddy.
I saw Todd Snider live last night. He did a solo version of this that just kicked much ass. He credited Billy Joe as one of his influences and heroes. And..oh yeah...this story is true...
billy joe is one of the last links to the ole country you listen to with your daddy drivin down the ol road an your daddy was sippin on a cold one, damn i wish i could go back , but the only bad part back then i couldnt have a cold one LOL !
Damn! I love Johnny Paychecks version of this with the funky base line......but heck I really feel this version....gonna have to find some of his albums he's writen some real classics.
Thanks, kerplunked. JP has a version, huh? Haven't heard it. Actually, finding any Paycheck is always a challenge. I'd be more than willing to swap ya some BJS for Johhny. Let me know.
@kosbok LOVE BILLY JOE SHAVER AND IT REALLY HURTS MY MUSICAL EAR THAT YOU WOULD SWAP ONE LOVE FOR THE OTHER! LOVE'EM BOTH...NO SWAP!...JUST AN EVEN SHARE,WooooooHoo!
I don't think they think a lot about things like genre in Texas, but they sure do make some really fine music. You know, he's one of a kind, as most of the great ones are, but Texas music is plumb full of folks every bit as uncategorizable as Billy Joe.
Billy Joe Shaver is the King of Texas Country & a brother outlaw at the cross. God Bless him and all y'all for spreadin' the word. He's a man Ive always admired, even when we were gettin' wasted over on the west end here in NashVegas back in the 70's. The last time I saw him was a couple years back with my other bro, Earl Clark at the Fiddle & Steel here in Printers Alley. He let go of the two young beauties hanging on him and gave me that smile & a Billy Joe bear hug.
Thanks for the excellent post- ever since XM America was killed off by stupid sirius, I can't get great songs like this anymore! Please keep them coming, and keep the GREAT country music alive!!
This is the song where I got the pickup line to ask out my wife on our first date: I might be as ugly as an ol' muddy river fish but I'm loaded with hillbilly charm.
I love this old time country, our country station has legends saturday night and they play a few good songs on that but all the rest is not even worth listenin to
Couldn't have said it better adj709, glad you liked it. I tell ya, there are a few good ones out there if you look hard enough (Stoney LaRue, Jason Boland) but do they get any radio play? Course not...especially where I'm at in Boston. Anyway, yeah to me this is almost the 'perfect' country song. It's pretty easy to see and hear what Waylon did and why Old Hoss went to Billy Joe so many times on his records. Billy Joe is a legend period.
This is one the best country songs!! its a shame we cant hear this kind of music on the radio instead they play all that shi**y music by them gay lookin boys like Kieth urban and rascall flats
One of the best singer-songwriters ever. If not the best! Great song.
