I had to watch the anime before I saw the movie. Above all, the reason I love the anime is because of the symbolism and unparalleled plot. I've yet to come across an anime that's anything like Utena.

it is quite a confusion not knowing what really is going on between anthy and utena.

or are they just simple friends with too much attachment with each other?

(for those who haven't, the scenes are from "Adolescence of Utena" and it's one of those "top ten anime of all time" sort of film.)

Everything is a symbol in this movie. First viewing is going to be confusing, but then go over it again, and pull the symbols out as you watch. It's pretty much about being a woman. It's also very hot ;) Enjoy it on many levels.

I loved both the series and the movie when I first watched them and I'll always do. Who said animations are for kids?! Utena is one piece of art which tells a story full of hiden meanings and symbols. Except the cool fight scenes a kid wouldn't really understand much of it.

While their relationship is a bit hard to define. In the anime the pairing was more so of a deep friendship and them as a couple was more suggested than anything solid. The movie was pretty much the only thing that gave us some solid evidence of them possabily having something more than a friendship. Point is you can take their relationship either way, friendship or more. It being canon or not shouldn't get in the way. *Shrugs* In case anyone's wondering I do take it as the romance way. :D
