  • fire piston, but a very nice kit :)

  • ...Warm it with your body, but it will work. I'd highly recommend some UCO Stormproof matches. They're surreal.

Again, I like your idea but if you have an advanced box like that you could add some advanced fire products to mix.

  • I love that waterproof case! I have many different brands from Otterbox to Pelican but that one's new to me. Nice.

A good kit, but to me the Maya Dust is worthless. It takes a lot of space and is simply shaved fatwood- and you already have fatwood. You could add a two or three Esbit Fuels in the same space and have a much more certain (and powerful) fire.

Next, book matches are a waste of space IMO. Replace them with real matches.

A BIC lighter is mandatory. At low temps you'll have to.

  • That is one well stocked kit. Very nice.

  • Cool kit but Zippo has never let me down

  • Carrying a lexan box to carry fake wood into the woods! With two additional containers! Much of that stuff in the box, like the firesteel and the round container are OK to get wet. Why would you get a container larger than needed? Your pack must weigh 200 pounds. If you take all that weight and replace it with a pack of esbit or a bottle of alcohol, you will not only have a firestarting kit, but you would have fuel for a week! Those things don't need tinder. You call these things "essentials"?

  • This seems to add a lot of unnecessary weight and bulk. Here is a kit that is redundant and not nearly as heavy: firesteel around the neck, bic lighter in the pocket, film canister packed with cotton balls. You can put petroleum jelly on the cotton balls ahead of time, or use what you would bring anyway in the field: lip balm, bug repellant, fly floatant, etc. A few esbit tabs is a good idea because they can be used not only to start fires, but as quick, emergency fuel. Dual purpose is the way.

  • Bic has never let me down. Nice kit.

  • Try using dryer lint instead of cotton dryer lint works much better

  • Don't take it as an offend, but if I have to carry all this staff with me looking for making a fire on a trip.........I think that I'm going to carry directly a lighter! . You have 7 different things plus a box 8, you just forgoted a 5 gallons gas can.

  • would add a flint striker from inside a clipper lighter they pull out and are okay to start a fire with char cloth or char bullrush heads. would also add a small fresnel lens as it only need sun so saves steel striker. would add char string or char bull rush heads. as both dont crumble like char cloth. also if you in usa instead the maya dust on pathfinders site they have sure fire or somet it called but dave canterberry did vid of it.

  • Nice kit. There are a few changes I'd make. First off a bit of PJ, 3X antibiotic, Carmex etc will allow the cotton to burn for several minutes. You can also dip the cotton balls in wax- then they'll burn for nearly 10 minutes. I also think that regular twigs are a waste of the space; I'd just add more fatwood or a few few Esbit tabs. Lastly, the Maya dust is pretty bulky for the use you'll get from it. Consider adding Tinder-Quik. And I'd trade the book matches for waterproof ones.

  • I would add a container of carmex or similar lip balm in the little screw off can. Allows you to coat anything with petroleum to help it burn. Also I would include a plastic index card sized plastic fresnel lens, $3 at wal-mart or office depot and very powerful for starting a fire.

  • is it me or is the cotton ball extremely fluffy

  • a 2 ounce bottle of hand sanitizer with atlest 62 percent alcohol will start a fire fast and will help with infection if you get cut which is what it is made for to start with. warning do not buy the bear grylls fire steel. it will not stay in the handle when striking

  • Add some trick birthday candles and/or tea lights to your kit.

  • or you could ditch all that crap that that weighs at least half a pound and costs what, 50$, and just take a bic lighter and ranger bands.

  • great vid keep it how it is or put more in i subscribed

  • @fire1169101 Maya dust isnt just pine shavings and it does burn very well, however it doesent start for crap with steel. you either need softer tinder with the steel or straight up open flame. it would be good for base camp but not for emergency situations.

  • i now it has nothing to do with the vid but i miss replys to my comments i havent been getting them lately

  • first i would take a Rx pill bottle and stuff it full of cotton balls

place one at a time and dab some petrolium jelly on each one

you can get like 30 to 40 in each bottle

i would take the sticks and twigs out and put a magnesium bar in but keep the maya sticks

the for less than 3 dollars get a zippo match

its very compact very easy to use and is air tight un like a zippo so you do not lose fuel do to evaporation

  • My fire kit looks like this:

1 Zippo + 40 ml spare fluid ( witch kan also be used to put on yourtinder, if its a little wet or something, its very burnable..)

    1 small bic lighter

    1 large firesteel

    15 matches

and ive got some emergency tinder:

some cotton ball, 2 tampons, some paper :)

  • Why have matches when you can have an RPG!

  • cool

  • why not use the steel wool and a 9 volt battery instead?

  • just fill the box up with esbit cubes or the trioxane equivalent.

sure its not going to last for months and months, but neither is a tin of wood dust, 2 cotton balls and some twine.

  • My compass has a magnifying glass on it. Even though I never used it to make a fire, it's nice to know I have that option.

  • I agree you should have different methods of starting a fire but aren't all your eggs in one basket or box in this case? What happens if you lose it or you can't get to it? You could lose your pack crossing a river, drop it whilst climbing or even leave camp for a call of nature and get disorientated. Better to keep some items on your person. Also you can use small strips of rubber from a bicycle inner tube, light it with a match or lighter and it burns even when wet. Stay safe.

  • Def. a good point, keeping something on you and having redundancy is always a good method to practice.

  • @slippery999 Beside my firestarting kit i alwayse have a zippo or a bic in my pocket, cause i am a smoker, and in my survival kit i still have a small fire steel, small bic and matches ;p

  • @slippery999 good point

  • @slippery999 While burning innertube can be usefull, the fumes prouduced are posiones. It can cause breathing difficulties for you and your party. Remember to sit upwind to avoid breathing in the fumes.

  • awesome kit...but a suggestion is to include vaseline or just saturate the cotton with vaseline...(100% petroleum jelly) it lasts about 1-5mins while burning depending on the size and amount you add to it.......just plain cotton balls light up easy, but they burn out really fast, too

  • Glad you like it. If you are going to use twine, know that it burns real quick, faster than the cotton balls. So be sure you have a decent fire structure built and possibly some other firestarter available for when it lights.

  • Nice kit. I'll have to add some twine to my tinder kit. Good idea.
