I grew up in the cold war where we were taught to hate one another, but I have yet to meet a Russian face to face that I have not gotten along with. It is sad to see two people hate each other, knowing that if they had been born in the same neigborhood, they might be the best of friends.
Well, i was in US public schools for a period of time back then and I received the opposite message: all the problems in the Soviet Union were vastly overstated and that actually the Soviets were in many ways vastly ahead of the US in technology. Seemed absolutely laughable to me some years later, but that's what many teachers tried to push. I never observed American school kids being encouraged hate Russians, either in US public schools or elsewhere.
