  • THE ONLY CORRECT COVER ON THE INTERNET

  • is this played in drop d? im not sure and would like ot know

  • @Remedy0187 yes

  • i wish i h`ad $4000 LOL

  • The comments on all the tool videos are so weird.

  • give this mans mothers vagina a gold star.... well done

  • I always thought the bass intro was slap, and that's always how I played it, but I've seen a lot of covers were they use a pick. Which is one is correct?

  • @othaka666 It's a pick. You can check out old Tool videos to see for sure. I used to slap it as well... no idea why it took me so long to hear it correctly.

  • Noticed the fretless in the back there. Very nice.

  • is it drop d or d?

  • @crackbabe159 drop d

  • I have the same guitar, it's over 30 years old and still plays so perfectly.

  • now i wanna get back on my bass but i have a shitted collarbone DAMNIT!

  • where did you get your bass i tried the rickenbacker site but theres no prices or a way to buy one

  • Nice nice nice job! Like your style!

  • do you know what gives the bass its growly sound? id really like to figure it out so i can make my ric sound more like it

  • @chrisslipknt444 The pickup...the toaster pickup

  • @TOOLbassplayer is it a hot toaster? i have a toaster pup in mine too

  • @TOOLbassplayer wait how does that make any sense at all? the switch is down which isolates the treble pickup making it the only one playing.

  • @chrisslipknt444 Your rick should sound like a rick, right off the shelf. What's going on? do you have pick up problems, a poor amp set up?

  • @MattSpon it does, not this sound though, this sound is unique to this ric

  • Awesome growl from that bass. Excellent cover mate.

  • NIICE bass, i envy your skills

  • great cover, only true main riff on you tube, however, has mistakes :D but neither Paul can play it right

    But Justin ... :D

  • la 1ra cuerda esta afinda = k la 3a vdd??

  • eres un maestro!!

  • Do not sell it... :'(

  • Great cover and great sound, what amp were you using on this video?

  • i meant you're missing the D sharp in the main verse riff

  • you're missing the D flat

  • COMO SUENA ESE BAJOOOO POR DIOSSSSSSSSS

  • My band plays this song too. This video helped me a lot. I changed the pick pattern a lil on the course caus my bass is old and it was the only way I could get a clean sound with the cord but as far as the mutes the only string I mute is the 2nd string(standard tuning would be the higher d string)

  • I wish I could a afford a ric 4001 :(

  • Tool is the shit!

  • I love rocks mainly because they sound great and I'm a rush nut! I love tool aswell.

  • Excellent cover you are really the best cover of this song no doubt.

    Congratulations

  • Awesome video, and even more awesome bass. I fell in love with it immediately. Lol.

  • Hey I think your videos are great! Unfortunately only 1000 of those Rickenbacker's were made. :( Do you know of any Rickenbacker's that sound the same or most similar to the Chris Squire editions? Thanks!

  • @JBoucks Buy what's known as the toaster pickup (you can see why it's called that cause it looks like the top of a toaster, [neck pick up]. Install them on your rick. It's what they used to come with in the early to mid 70's I belive.

  • Are you muting the D string or are you all the strings open?

  • great job man!!! ive watched this about 50 times now to help me learn the song, but i cant quite figure out the timing on the mutes, any suggestions as to help with that?

  • ok so im trying to learn this song and ive watched your video like 50 times now, and i still cant get the mutes timed out right. what can i do to help with that?

  • @TOOLbassplayer

Thank you so much! your covers are easily the easiest to interpret on youtube and they are all great!

  • Amazing man

  • Comment removed

  • Is that a B-52 amp i see behind you? How are those?

  • what time signature is the main riff in? (with the D octave chord)

  • @henry12350 4/4

  • @FleshStarvingBass the riffs on the & of one and the 4 right? so it goes

    rest-&2-rest-4&

or are they both on upbeats?

  • @henry12350  CH CH X X X X CH CH R X R X X R X X => HERE STARTS THE WHOLE FIGURE AGAIN, KEEP REPEATING.

CH = Chord (both open Ds, 5th fret on D string and 7th fret on G string) X = DEAD NOTE, R = REST

Time signature: 4/4, tempo around 155 quarter. Good luck !!

  • @FleshStarvingBass 5th fret on A string, typo.

  • dude!awesome!!=D your video helped me a lot =)) btw,not the best cover i've seen, but the most epic, cuz of Ric XD have you seen 7sloth version?

  • @m2804 thanks man. I did see his version. He is a very talented player for sure. However, this is the same bass that Paul actually used on the album and this is how he played the song, note for note, with a pick etc. :)

It may not be the best cover, but it's the most accurate cover in my opinion. :)

  • @TOOLbassplayer I think this IS best cover. However, I prefer 7sloths playstyle (I have similar one). Your picking method is very advanced and the sound you make... many would be envious on you.

  • @m2804 dude, not sure what you're talking about :P this has got to be the best cover of the song. How can anything better than an exact replica of the original? :P

  • @welanm3891 mmm,i can answer, somebody's interpretation can be better, because i think if somebody can make original song sound better(don't judge my opinion,i understand that i can be wrong) it's example of his/her skill or knowledge, anyway, song is awesome and this cover is great, but people may prefer different things you know =) it's just me who likes better 7sloth's cover, cuz it's played a bit different,i do like original, but i also like when people left something from themselves ;)

  • @welanm3891 you know,it's like 1-st place,no doubt, but not grandprix, hope you can understand me,not meant in bad way...bad example may be,but though, when somebody makes a paper plane,it looks nice, but if you paint it,it looks better, isn't it?=) i once took first place in talent show at school,we played two songs,i was happy, but my friend was not,he wanted grandprix...sorry for this amount of text XD

  • @m2804 lol I hear what you're saying man, totally understand. I guess it's just a matter of opinion and what you're looking for. I like how the original is but, it is always nice to see a song with someone else's flare to it.

    gotta love music lol :)

  • Awesome Patch! And the bass *Droooool*

  • Im so jealous......DO U REALLY HAD TO SHOW US YOUR WAL IN THE BACKROUND ??? XD

  • i prefer ric above all other basses, awesome cover dude

  • amazing bass cover. Can u send me this tab? =) i like to play this cover song, but i do not find a tab that is good...

  • SICK!

  • Awesome cover.

    Rickenbacker's are fucking BEAUTIFULLL.

  • @MaggotSoldier666 You should see mine...

  • thats a badass lookin bass bro

  • You should cover this song with your Wal, I want to see what it sounds like.

  • This is a good basic sound does your Rick have the original pickups?, or after market with more windings?

  • best cover ive seen for this song on the bass!

  • That's such a beautiful bass :) why are you letting go of it?

  • You gata be shiting me!? is that the Rickenbacker the original bassist used to use? (sorry for bad the spelling, english is not my main langauge)

  • Awsome cover dude.. you're my influence for buying a bass guitar well and justin chancellor :-]

  • Did you use the Rick-o-sound on this at all? If so, what did you use for distortion?

    It sounds awesome!

  • @exit119bass The Chris Squire limited does not have the Ric O Sound stereo option. It is just a single jack. There is not distortion here. This is how the bass sounds plugged in. The Chris Squire is known to have the meanest sound of the Rick lineup! :) Very hot pickup!

  • @TOOLbassplayer

Wow! That's awesome! I have an '81 Rickenbacker 4001, and I can get a similar, but not as crunchy sounding. Great tone man! Keep up the awesome videos!

  • @TOOLbassplayer Your mom's a hot pickup.

  • Dude if you think this is exactly how this bass line goes you need to lisen to the song a few more times. Your missing alot of notes and hitting alot of wrong notes. Humble yourself and Learn the song correctly! I give you an "A" for the Rick. and a "E" for effort. Tools Bass Tech.... Bassclefjef

  • @bassclefjef Lol he hasn't missed a single note.

  • I love how much the low D moves when you do that chord... especially the last chorus, love the tone of that thing too

  • Killer job dude. Sounds perfect. What kind of amp and cab did you use for this cover? Would be greatly appreciated if you told us all. Please and thank you.

  • i think will all could thank paul d'amour for the great bass playing he did on the rickenbacker bass in the early years of tool and brad great job and this is how the song is played.

  • This redefines awesome bass-age :D

  • rickenbacher is the best

  • Great job I allways liked agressive bass players who could push the envelope and add to the music not just play a support role. Pual D'amour and Cliff Burton where some of the best at this. I've played drums for years but never bass. What tips would you give for someone to start lessons ? Awesome work.... a good musician might have speed, advanced technique, and skill but never loses groove or feel and overplay.

  • Just out of curiosity, how much did the WAL cost?

  • Comment removed

  • @D1N4MO This is EXACTLY how the song is played

  • @TOOLbassplayer If you listen closely, you'll hear an open high D after the last drumbeat at the end of each of the first four measures of the 2nd verse. It's quiet, but audible and necessary to point out.

  • @D1N4MO yeah it is exactly how its played

  • @D1N4MO Sorry to say dude your wrong. TOOLbassplayer is playing this right, and if you don't believe it just look at the video of Tool playing Sober live. You can clearly see hes spot on with his playing. Keep it up man your amazing ignore the haters. Bass For Life

  • OMG I really want a rick

  • not too hard of a song eh man?

  • I want what I want. Sweet bass. DX

  • where did you find your Rick?

  • i always knew there was a paul d amour clone out there...

  • @metalgun462 Too bad Justin Chancellor is better, in my opinion he is all in all a more badass bassist....

  • @WhichOnesPink777 I'm afraid the question is, why NOT he sell it ? because I want it! (If only I have the money :)

  • why are you selling a masterpiece instrument like that?

  • WHOA. You're fucking amaazing.

  • dude why r u selling the ric?

  • that rickenbackers beauty can only be matched by that gorgeous tone thats coming out of it 10/5 you really knocked the shit out of that sing keep up the good work

  • Did you remove the pickup bar that covers the larger rear pickup, or did you buy it that way?

  • Is this song in D?

I see the octave chord on 5a and 7g so i guess i'm right.

  • @boilingpoint3 drop D

  • tunning please

  • @enemyofall67 dadg

  • Pete Stevens was the old bassist from tool right?

  • can you please tell me what kind of bass amp to get to get for my fender aerodyne bass, i want to sound as close as justin chancellor as i can just not a bass that is 2 expensive

  • Which setting are you using?? And also, whats your rigg? Great work as always mate! :D:D

  • Make a collab with a guitarist and you got yourself an awesome cover.

  • Why the hell would you sell that bass!?

  • this bass is so sexi it makes me have to shit really bad

  • Damn, it's hard to play this with a 5 string :(

  • The cool part of the intro is that he's literally playing four D notes.

  • Wow dude are you rich? You have a wal, a fender, and a Rick. Plus your GK amps and pedals.

  • Nice Rick and very nice cover man! Keep rocking like that! :-D

  • how much would a rick like that go for??

  • i would pay to sleep with those hot basses ! lol pimp em out!

  • Wow, amazing cover. I can't wait to learn the song myself!

  • Comment removed

  • first i was jealous of your wal, but now a chris squire rickenbacker? definitely an incredible collection of guitars man.

  • Im assuming the Horseshoe pickup got in the way of your picking technique? Does it actually do anything tone wise to the RIC, I might slap one on my 75 4001 Jetglo whenever I can afford to.

  • DUDE thats a fucking cool bass i would like to buy but cant because i want to get a wal bass

  • wich tuning do you use?

  • @Thommislav

    It is just drop-D... D A D G

  • @AdrianStick

    thnx

i just couldn't sort it out!

my bass has got ancient strings that the e doesn't resonate

  • bass is boring..

  • @fernandog07 Only the songs that Paul wrote for Tool. Watch the Jambi or Rosetta Stoned videos on here and tell me they're boring.

  • awesome cover, how long have you been playing?

  • So... you are about the ending :[

Just kiddin', nice job man, but...

  • good job man but are you sure that you're playing it right? :)

  • Do you use a "dirty" channel for this one? Or is it pure Ric?

  • beautiful

    love the tone

  • I think it would sound cooler with only down strokes on the chorus part thing before Maynard sings, "Why can't we not be sober." That's just my humble opinion though.

  • do u have the tabs?????

  • Aaaah these freackin screamin Ricks.. one day, I'll have one and I'm goin to leave this world. Haha

  • great cover man, id love to see you play some yes now with tha badass chris squire rick!

  • only thing that might be better than this cover is the glorious Wal in the backround and the P bass

  • nah. Sounds better with the Rick. It sounds more authentic and like the album version.

  • @TOOLbassplayer a rick just makes everything sound better

  • @TOOLbassplayer nothing better as a rick,

    run it in stereo ;)

  • @TOOLbassplayer This is a chris squire signature? looks liek a different bridge and bridge pickup, are they? what is different about it from a regular ric

  • this looks way easier than it is :P

  • its really not soo hard (as opposed to most Tool songs.) for me its just hard to not thrash around too much and mess up. i guess i get WAY to into it :)

  • why must this rick sound so good?

  • Major thanks for this cover, awesome sound and playing. btw wish i had the money for your bass :)

  • Did someone buy your Ricken?

    Nice cover dude :)

  • dam nice cover and that bass is something else. im too ghetto to afford that shit lol id have to sell a fuck load of weed to buy that bitch lol JK.

  • @dasmushroomcult LMAO!!!!

Now that's speaking on the real.

    Good shit!

    * I'll help start you off brah', I'll take 2 dimes of

    Chocolate Thai please! (lol)

  • @dasmushroomcult yeah right man haha

  • man, i wish i could've gotten a Chris Squire limited edition while they were being made! i already had my 2 4003's, which i still have and will probably be buried with them! ;) i just love their sound! and i really like how the one in this vid growls, especially when the guy hits that tuned down E string!! if that don't put lead in your pencil, i don't know what does!!

  • " put lead in your pencil"...??

  • ha!!! ;) you never heard that expression?? it means 'gives you a hard-on'.

  • Auww...why do you want to sell it ? It should be your most prized bass. No wait, sell it! Sell it to me :) (lol, I don't have any money)

  • I wonder how much one of those costs ?

  • amazing!!! thank you the growl and depth of the ric is awesome and I am stunned at you technique

  • ohhhh that roar.... ohhh... it melts my entrails. good job as always.

  • woah, thats one cool looking bass. never found a bass that i've really liked before.. might have something to do with being a guitarist >.>

anyway nice job with this song you nailed it. probably my favourite song atm :)

  • this rick is amazing ! i love that sound ....

  • cool video and thanks for tabs nice to have a collection of bass tabs

  • That's exactly why i bought it. How'd you know? you are very observant!! Congrats!!! Is your IQ score 160? Wow...I never met a genius before I am humbled by your presence. Can I have your phone number? I bet your so cool. I wanna hang out with you and be your friend.

  • You might look in a mirror, you are a musical genius.

  • oh yeah and for the record I acquired my first wal in 1995. It was a Walnut Wal Mk1 so how is it that I copied Justin when I had it before he did? He switched to Wal in 1996 during the recording of Aenima. He didn't even order his model until 1997. Pete told me that personally. You probably don't even know who Pete is, do you?

Anyways, can I be your friend or what?

  • some coincidence imo

  • oh and know who the fuck is pete

  • Pete Stevens. Google it.

  • @TOOLbassplayer Did Tool have a bass player before Justin? I see a guy that looks different than him on a live video of this song

  • @richdanks Dude chill the hell out who the hell do you think you are?

  • If i could thumbs up your comments, I would. :D thats a very unique bass before, never seen one like it. i love it. great cover too, sounds amazing! 5/5

  • @TOOLbassplayer Doesn't flea from RHCP use wal too?
