  • great video. I dont get whats with all these stupid comments. the mere fact that he is keeping up with an evo is evidence of how great the miata is. It just shows you dont need a tonne of money to go fast or have fun.

  • It always cracks me up when I see braindead nascar rednecks calling miatas "fag" or "girly". Sounds like a case of homophobia, or need to compensate for lack of brain cells upstairs (and downstairs). I'll take on any of you rednecks in my FM Mazdaspeed MX-5 any day of the week... I'd rather have sake and sushi than Coors Lite and a Big Mac :) Then again, I guess taste is subjective... I'm not a fat, stupid sloppy American.

  • I have owned a S2000, Boxter S, and now a miata. The miata has been the car with the most fun factor. sure its not as fast but its so much more rewarding to drive.

    Also i notice some saying how the driver was jerking the steering wheel during the curves and that it is due to weak driving....umm ya they obviously have not driven on a track all balls out.... check out Keiichi Tsuchiyas TOUGE driving and you will see whats up

  • Actually, 300 flywheel bhp is possible on a stock miata with decent cooling/management.

    Not bad considering its not even supposed to be a turbocharged engine :)

    I admit the 4g63 is a very impressive engine but its not designed for the same use as a miata so its not fair to compare them...

    also 170hp in a miata feels like the 300 odd in an evo, its all about the fun factor of driving the car for me...

  • Also on the engineering side of things, believe it or not some people (like me) enjoy designing their own turbo kits and the miata is a very good base for this and very cheap to buy parts for.

    In fact I believe the Mx5/Miata/eunos is the MOST popular selling sportscar of ALL time !!!!! Just look up the production numbers compared to those of the evo :p. thats because of its bombproof reliability, great handling, and fun nature.

    Ignorant. My MX-5 was 176 hp STOCK, with a factory turbo! Less than $9,000 in mods lets my rig blow yours out of the water. Get used to it :) Sounds more like penis envy.

  • okay tough guy. This car dynoed at exactly 145 peak rwtq the day before the video was taken, I was running low boost (6psi), on 195/60/14 street tires, and it's pretty much the most basic kit one could slap together under $1500.

    If you need a 2.0L stroker to go fast; you're doing it wrong.

  • dam man thast some nice driving hows the turbo holdin up? how mcuhd u pay for it? o and if it isnt fitted with a limmited slip differental you should get one improves ahndling a lot on wet surfaces and when you are carrying heavy stuff but that is some nice driving and wow with only 170 hp nice

  • Struggling? Not that I remember. My Azenis got slippery (this was a +100*F Aug day, video is the last 8:00 of a 15min session), at 4:05 I almost lost the rear.

    The car had power steering, it was almost too easy. At +130mph on the straight it felt like the steering was non-existent, suffice to say my new miata has a manual rack.

  • i currently have a evo and before owned a beautiful 10th ae and soon i plan to get another miata in the future to have w/the evo. these cars are alike to me handling wise. evo's steering is quicker but very very similar to a miata..

  • in a circuit race the very best is a r34 skyline gtr. The driver of this miata was really good and that evo probably lifted at the straight given it probably still has a better power to weight ratio than this miata. before u all hate on me know I believe other than the lotus elise or exige s(too expensive) miatas are the best for autocross.

  • have you ever driven a miata? mine will easly out drive an evo, and I hate to shater your ego, these guys I pass don't slow down at all. put your bias away and go drive a mx5 you will find that its not all about 4WD. its just that you think 2D.

  • money to speed ratio is far better in the miata this car can be built for maybe 5k less if you get good deals, bring a miata to 20k and it will step on evos, a friend of mine has the fm built engine and the fmII turbokit w/ gt37r iirc. and 300+ rwhp in a car that weighs around 2100lbs is insane

    me i like evos, i would buy an sti over one and i have driven both but there is just something about the feel of a miata

  • are you forgetting that the Evo also has better handling cause it's 4WD and has a better suspension, the Evo driver wasn't even racing, he let you pass, so in other words, the Evo is a better car in both straights and corners even though the Miata weights less

  • simply having "AWD" doesnt equate to better handling. The term 'handling' covers way more area's then it's power delivery on exit. Evo having better suspension? I didn't know McPherson strut front susp were superior to double-wishbone. Not to mention the extra 1000lb's the EVO is pushing around and that it is very front heavy.

    EVO was stock, miata was -far- from it and this was only an HPDE which means that there will be a many drivers on the track at that are on entirely different driving abilities and confidence levels.

  • You got a point, but think of the cost difference of the two cars. The miata is still waaaay cheaper than the Evo even though it clearly is modded. Evos aren't bad cars, jsut compared a miata, not exactly cost-effective.

  • I Guess thats why you see all the articles in the car mags about Miatas more so than lancer evo? by the way I just love the evo's superior rusy cast iron headers that are like 50 lbs, and the 70/30 weight distrbution is far better than the mx-5's 50/50 you may argue the evo having more power and more torqe, but please dont try to look like an idiot with this evo is a better hadling hence better car thing its just not gonna work.

  • "the story continues" Sorry but it is not I've drivin both as a driver i can tell you the evo is a much better car off road the mx-5 is much better on the road and overall qality Mazda is better than mitsubishi. I'm sorry you may really like evo's for what ever reason, but I'm just giving you my non bias oppinion.

  • its not 4wd its all wheel drive, and front biased at that meaning its fwd till one of the tires slip then it will transfer UP TO 40% of the power to the rear wheels, evos understeer for that very reason, hell the gallardo understeers even though its MR setup because of the awd,

    and obviously you havent been on a track because yes he let up because he was getting owned in the corners, if you dont let someone pass in that scenario you can and will be removed from the track by the officials

  • correct, it's a faster car....in the straights. I was very underpowered comparatively.

    also it's a HDPE, notice no one passes without a point? As soon as I go past turn 1 I'm faster throughout the rest of the track.

  • it's only an HPDE, driver must wave a pass...notice I didnt pass most of the slower cars untill certain spots.

    I've talked to a friend of the EVO driver, he said once he let me by, he couldn't keep up.

  • I got plenty of comments from bystanders that said I was passing all these cars but the didn't hear it. I still have 2.25" catback with a large muffler. Just a tad louder than stock. Intake is louder than exhaust.

  • the miata is such a great handling stock, so throw in a little suspension work and you'll have a car that will pull over 1.0 g lateral acceleration. The evo and the sti are way overrated. case in point evo gets passed by a rwd miata shortly after exit of corner.

  • suspension FIRST learn about it from the ground up. Get some Konis and learn learn learn. You can ad a super charger cheaply - a jrsc m45 will give you PLENTY of power and you will beat many cars with just that.
