Check out the Red Baron and Paradise turbo VW drag cars they are in the high 7s and low 8s in the 1/4 mile. What they have done with Hyper Bug is very impressive since it is done with such a small displacement. They are making six times the HP as the original 1600.
This is a 1/8th mile track rite???? looks like you have it set up so that it's easy to remove the turbo, and still use it as a reasonable road car?????(not that having the turbo on all the time would make it unreasonable)

The "block" and crankshaft of the Hyper Bug have been raced in that turbo/nitrous configuration for 6 years- same block and crank, only 1 main bearing refresh, just to be safe.There is a video of a 6.29 pass on here, and it has been quicker.

you can get a turnkey 1641 CC engine for about $2699.99. they are ready to run engines basically and thats the price from mid america motorworks website you could probably get them cheaper. but that engine is not going to come with a turbo but if you go to chico performance racing they can build you a custom made turbo turnkey engine but it'll cost you probably about 5-7,000 dollars
If you put a turbo on an "off the shelf " 1641, it will not make anywhere near the horsepower of the Hyper Bug. This is a Blow Thru turbo setup.
It took 3 years of experimentation to get the Hyper Bug to do what you see in this video., To see even more power from this engine, from last season, search Youtube for

i live in NC and have been to farmington dragway i was telling him how much a 1641cc turnkey engine would be. i was also telling him it'll cost you more for them to put a turbo on it. i'm talking about daily driving engines regular and with turbos. i have common sense and know that the engine in this video took some time to build and was specifically built for drag racing
This engine was street driven (at low boost levels) for 2 years, before it was put in The Hyper Bug.(no cooling system now) The original question was" how much does an engine like that cost?" That engine has a 6.29 at almost 114 in the 1/8 mile run on video here on Youtube. The car weighs 1835 pounds, and does 1.32 sixty foot times. I have given enough info to do the math and figure the horsepower. This is the only 1641 I know of producing that much power, so how much will one like it cost?

you can buy piston and cylinder upgrade kits for like $500 that uses your stock 1600 casing. of course you gotta buy some dual carbs amoung other things but you can build yourself a nice 1641 for around 2 grand.
i already have a souped up engine thats been rebuilt its a 1882 cc engine i don't like dual carbs thats why i got a progressive weber carb kit on mines
o yeah thats cool well i didn't have to pay for it cause my aunt gave me her beetle which had the motor in it and its a 1970 VW beetle it's pretty sweet
cause she used to street race it around town and it was given to her back in 1978 something like that by my grandfather and so its been in the family for a while. haha
I have an 73 reg beetle that currently has a 1600cc, but I found chunks of magnetic metal in my oil during an oil change 2 weeks ago. So I will rebuild it this time to a 1641 with all electronic ignition from pertronix. I will not have the nitro goodies as it will be still my daily driver.
nice purge there in the middle i like that comming from a bug. im 16 and a 73 super beetle is my ride. its fun, but im not sure what to do with the engine to add more umph if you know what i mean. right now i have 1600cc in it, and i would like to bring it up to around like 1900cc but im not sure what the best way to go about doing that would be... if anyone knows the cheepest, but reliable way that would be great.
@workensmart Sorry to respond so long after your question. the Hyper Bug has a rev limiter that shuts down the ignition to prevent over revving during gear shifting. When the engine falls under the 7200 rpm limit, it fires the excess fuel and air,causing the "Pop'.
@midge255 to quote the chili peppers, "if you have to ask, you'll never know." Leave it alone kid, at least until you have a lot of extra time and cash and quite a bit of experience working on cars. To answer your question you would have a shop mill out your cases for bigger cylinders and mill out the inside of the case for a stroked crank (comes to 1886 I think), but there's a lot more to it than just that, you would need appropriate carbs, cams, etc. Leave it alone. It will be a money pit.
@taylorwolfbrandt Agreed- bolt on horsepower is a myth. It take lots of tuning and experimenting to get all the potential,and the more modified an engine, the more finicky it is.The Hyper Bug is a product of years of work.
@midge255 Im 16 With a 1969 VW, and I bought a 1914 Pro Street Motor From MOFOCO. It runs well On the Street and i have yet to find out my times in a 1/4 Mile. It is estamated to about 110-120 Horsepower.

@midge255 dude i got a 74 bug. great little cars.heres my tip for power. put in a stroker kit with maybe a 90.5mm bore and a scat couterweighted crank. for a daily driver i recomend an oil breather box and a less restrictive exhaust. dual Kadron carbs work good but if u got the cash go for some weber idf carbs. if u wanna be a little differen, try a judson supercharger or a simple turbo setup.
@midge255 do what i did, I bored it to a 1776 cc, then put a big cam. put a thunderbird header and a little stinger, itll get around. 0-60 in like 8 seconds.

you can get a turnkey 1641 CC engine for about $2699.99. they are ready to run engines basically and thats the price from mid america motorworks website you could probably get them cheaper. but that engine is not going to come with a turbo but if you go to chico performance racing they can build you a custom made turbo turnkey engine but it'll cost you probably about 5-7,000 dollars

If you put a turbo on an "off the shelf " 1641, it will not make anywhere near the horsepower of the Hyper Bug. This is a Blow Thru turbo setup.
It took 3 years of experimentation to get the Hyper Bug to do what you see in this video., To see even more power from this engine, from last season, search Youtube for
"VW show at farmington"
And "Hyper Bug 2008 sneak preview" Wheelies in 3 gears.

i live in NC and have been to farmington dragway i was telling him how much a 1641cc turnkey engine would be. i was also telling him it'll cost you more for them to put a turbo on it. i'm talking about daily driving engines regular and with turbos. i have common sense and know that the engine in this video took some time to build and was specifically built for drag racing

This engine was street driven (at low boost levels) for 2 years, before it was put in The Hyper Bug.(no cooling system now) The original question was" how much does an engine like that cost?" That engine has a 6.29 at almost 114 in the 1/8 mile run on video here on Youtube. The car weighs 1835 pounds, and does 1.32 sixty foot times. I have given enough info to do the math and figure the horsepower. This is the only 1641 I know of producing that much power, so how much will one like it cost?

you can buy piston and cylinder upgrade kits for like $500 that uses your stock 1600 casing. of course you gotta buy some dual carbs amoung other things but you can build yourself a nice 1641 for around 2 grand.

I have an 73 reg beetle that currently has a 1600cc, but I found chunks of magnetic metal in my oil during an oil change 2 weeks ago. So I will rebuild it this time to a 1641 with all electronic ignition from pertronix. I will not have the nitro goodies as it will be still my daily driver.

nice purge there in the middle i like that comming from a bug. im 16 and a 73 super beetle is my ride. its fun, but im not sure what to do with the engine to add more umph if you know what i mean. right now i have 1600cc in it, and i would like to bring it up to around like 1900cc but im not sure what the best way to go about doing that would be... if anyone knows the cheepest, but reliable way that would be great.

@workensmart Sorry to respond so long after your question. the Hyper Bug has a rev limiter that shuts down the ignition to prevent over revving during gear shifting. When the engine falls under the 7200 rpm limit, it fires the excess fuel and air,causing the "Pop'.

@midge255 to quote the chili peppers, "if you have to ask, you'll never know." Leave it alone kid, at least until you have a lot of extra time and cash and quite a bit of experience working on cars. To answer your question you would have a shop mill out your cases for bigger cylinders and mill out the inside of the case for a stroked crank (comes to 1886 I think), but there's a lot more to it than just that, you would need appropriate carbs, cams, etc. Leave it alone. It will be a money pit.

@midge255 Im 16 With a 1969 VW, and I bought a 1914 Pro Street Motor From MOFOCO. It runs well On the Street and i have yet to find out my times in a 1/4 Mile. It is estamated to about 110-120 Horsepower.

@midge255 dude i got a 74 bug. great little cars.heres my tip for power. put in a stroker kit with maybe a 90.5mm bore and a scat couterweighted crank. for a daily driver i recomend an oil breather box and a less restrictive exhaust. dual Kadron carbs work good but if u got the cash go for some weber idf carbs. if u wanna be a little differen, try a judson supercharger or a simple turbo setup.
