@the404man Hey sorry for the late reply, it did come with the blue springs. The "updated" LS6 springs are actually blue when you get them from GM direct, some still have the yellow springs.
@Jakebdb56 5.3's are 325 cubes; have one now and previous '05 Sierra owner's manual stated 325cu in. Instead of using that one factor for all, figure it out by actually multiplying Pi x r sqrd (radius of bore sqrd) x H (stroke) x 8 (# of cyls)... 3.1416 x 1.89 x1.89 x 3.62 x 8 = 324.99 cubic in.
@07gmclover a 4.8 is 293 and the 5.3 is a 323 ..........if you put a 9mm longer rod in the 4.8L and run the oem flat top pistons you will have a 5.3 with 10 more hp than the regular 5.3 due to raised compression
@jmecrg the only way to increase cubes is by increasing the bore or stroke. longer rods do nothing but make the rod angle better, and if you put a 9mm longer rod in with stock piston your engine will be fucked because the piston will slam the shit out of the head.
Who did you have you tuning done by? Ive put a little hotter cam in my 5.3 but my timing retards itself waaaayy too much for it to really help anything. Im assuming that some kind of custom tuning needs to be done. I havnt really found a reliable source yet. A response would be appreciated.
Jakebdb56. why do you say its not practical from a street performance truck point of view? Were putting a 5.3 in a 53 gmc pickup and I would like to put a cam in it, but am unsure how that affects stock computer, and valvetrain.. Any info would be very helpful! Thanks.
So, you wouldn't use this cam again, if given the chance to do it over? Sounds awesome!!!! I have been wanting to try the hot cam in my 06 5.3 but didn't see many results with people using it.
Thanks! I wouldn't recommend this cam if you're looking for maximum potential power. If you want something that sounds good, has good drivability, and is less stressful on the valvetrain then yeah this cam is alright.
1/4 times with the Hot cam would have been a low 14, but didn't have the chance to run before my transmission went out. It sounds good, but isn't very practicle from a performance street truck point of view.

I finally have the new differential/gears broken in and everything's running great. If I have time this week I'll get an idle clip and maybe a few WOT runs racing a friend or something.
sounds great, if i was to get a cam for my truck ( 00 silverado) can i get just the cam or do i have ot buy a programmer or something or take it some were and if so can i use just a regular scanner or no?
To get everything out of it you really need to have it tuned either by a mail order place (PCM4Less, etc.) or by a local tuning shop. I use HPTuners to tune my truck and my customers' cars/trucks. Your best bet is to find a local speed shop that can tune it. Also, to do a cam swap you need valvesprings and hardened pushrods.
Hey man I got a question I really need it answered. Does your truck with the 219/228 .525"/.525" @.050" pass inspections and emissions testing? I have to pass emissions where I live and I really want my truck to sound like this.
You can pass emissions no problem as long as your O2 sensors are working fine. If you remove your cats, you'll have to get the rear O2's disabled inside the tune.
sounds sweet man. you ever heard of anybody putting a diff cam in 350 vortec? i got a 97 GMC and im curious if anybody else has done it and if it sounds good
I bought one for mine but i never had the time to put it in. I will this summer though and will post a video as soon as i get it in. I think it will sound good especially after the computer is tuned.
Sound great. It should be suprisingly quick for a pick up. Can't wait till you have a video of you truck with the new cam and trans in it. I need to post video of my 74 Chevelle on here for you to see once I drop in the carbed LQ9 i just finished building for it.
Yeah that should be nice running a carbed LQ9. The truck feels great with the 3000 stall, but I destroyed the stock rearend last week. A Detroit Truetrac will be going in tomorrow along with 4.10 gears :)
Just a little update: Installed the TR224 cam today and everything runs great. I got everything tuned and ready to roll for my transmission install tomorrow. The transmission should hold to about 600hp at the crank. I'm also going to run a Yank TT3000
I have a question. Did you port the heads or change them out too? I know you have a complete diffrent head than a 4.8 lr4 motor, but do ls heads also fit? is there any coolant passages taht might be restricted? I have a 4.8l and i want to bore it out and stroke it to a 5.3l and cam it but i was just wondering. IM new at engine building so sorry.
It's useless to port stock truck castings honestly. Just find some LS6 heads aka 243's. They flow very well and if you get them decked at a machine shop they'll do better. All Gen III Ls heads will fit on any Gen III motor. It's no use to stroke a 4.8L. They have the same bore (I believe) but use a different crankshaft/rods. You're better off just saving for a LQ9 (6.0L)
I never got a chance to run it at the track or even dyno it. The transmission gave way about a week after the cam was in there. I should have done a shift kit and servo before the cam, but I learned from my mistake now.
im looking at the gm hotcam kit with the ls6 spring for my 6.0l, i know your spos to change your lifters but did you have to change your rockers for this?
You don't have to change lifters or rockers at all. Just swap the springs, cam, and pushrods and you'll be good to go. 7.400" pushrods are a must if you want to spin it past 6k'ish
Just a little update, I've since been running the stock cam but with a few changes. In a few weeks I'll have a fully built transmission with a yank TRT3000 stall and a new cam. I'm going to swap the springs to comp 918's (the new kind) and run a TR224 specs are 224/224 .563/.563 on a 112LSA
If u want to Swap to the new cam, u just have to change the springs right? Cause im gonna get a "TR Blower" - 214/230 .601/.579 117 LSA and i was wondering what springs are the best?
You need to swap out the pushrods for hardened pushrods. The TR Blower cam is good especially if you want to go forced induction some day. If you're going all motor I'd just run a TR220 or something. As far as springs are concerned. For a daily driver I wouldn't run dual springs, but 918's are kind of a happy medium. The new 918's are fine so far, *knock on wood*. I just put a set in my truck.
The TR Blower has the same specs as the Cheatr Cam they have which doesnt have a loud idle? "CheaTR" - 214/230 .601/.575 117 LSA it says in their site that i need double valve springs and titanium retainers?
I got My cam... Lift .630/.644 Duration 215/231 Lobe 118.. What do u suggest me getting? i already have patriot gold springs...do i need to get hardened pushrods?
Definitely get hardened pushrods. That's a pretty big cam honestly. It won't lope too much because of the high LSA, but the split in duration might make it lope a little. Patriot gold springs are great and last a while, but with that much lift you will need to probably pull them after 10k miles and double check all the springs.
hell yea it did haha. I made the switch to Royal Purple after I found that Mobil-1 full synth. wasn't lasting very long in my truck. I ran my first change of RP for 14k miles and the oil was still good. It's not only cost-effective, but does reduce friction and has more consistent oil pressure. I run 5W-30 and have about 55psi cruising and over 80psi at WOT
hows the bottom end? I have a 03 2500HD with a lq4 and this is the cam i was looking to get for it. I have 3" true duals and lost some bottom end there. Thinking this summer gonna get some pacesetters and run 2 1/2" duals with no cats
did you have to change your converter for this cam? I think i read that this cam is pretty much the biggest u can go with stock converter
The bottom end isn't impressive at all for most cams out there. That's why most people install at least a 2600 stall to keep in the powerband. I didn't swap my converter, and I wouldn't run anything bigger than this cam with the stock converter. Really a 212/218 low lift is on the edge of being "too big" for the stock converter. You just lose a lot of low end hp/trq going on the plus side of a 220 duration.
Definitely one of the best Silverado's I've heard I have an 06 5.3 like yours but I have Shorty tube headers, stock cats/Y-pipe, Super 40 Series (Super truck exit) AFE intake, Superchips Cortex running on 93 tune. Would you recommend Longtube headers and Cat delete?
Hows your driveablity now? Any problems with starting and staying running. I'm thinking of putting an LS1 hot cam on a 4.8L supercharger 05 silvo. I'm drive it daily during the summer only but still want to go distances and feel confident every time.
nice truck! I have an 04 sierra 5.3 and i wanna cam it. Which cams should i look into? also could i install it by myself? (I am a gear head so i know how to work on vehicles...but certain things need pro installations)any advice would be nice thanx!
you could install it by yourself, but some specialty tools make the job easier. Thunder Racing has some good grinds, and a very common 5.3 cam is the TR220. My next cam will be a low-lift 206-216/210-220 on a 110 LSA. I'm going with a torque cam next time. A lot depends on what you're wanting to do with the truck. If you want just the sound get a mild cam, but if you're all out performance get a high lift cam with a big duration like the TR224
yeah the new vortec's are pretty tight.i still think it would be a good run. How much more power do you think that cam is putting out.... it sounds soo good.
I dyno'd at 300/300 without the cam, so I'd say with the cam maybe 325-335 depending on the conditions. It screams up top, but there's better grinds out there. I chose the cam because it was low-lift and had a good duration. For low-lift cams it makes good power.
I actually saw an increase in highway mileage, especially with my ram air setup I had for a while. I got about 24-26mpg on the freeway cruising at 75, around town I got a little better than 13 lol
I never got to dyno the truck or run the 1/4 because of drivetrain issues (4L60E didn't like it). I would be happy if I got 30 hp at the wheels. This cam's powerband is like a light switch, at 3000 it starts pulling really hard all the way to the shift.
because the 88 motor is a TBI motor, not an LS-based motor. None of the LS parts will fit your motor. TBI motors are terrible and require a good chunk of money to make them quick. If I'm not mistaken, the LT4 Hot
Cam won't work in that motor either. Just do a LS1 swap.
You can find used LS motors on craigslist and a ton of other websites. It's a pretty extensive swap, but you could do a direct swap if you buy a complete motor with PCM/harness. It'll work with your transmission (most likely a 700R4), but the trans will give up sooner or later. An LS1 with the GM Hot Cam and longtube headers will make upwards of 450-475 flywheel horsepower. Even more with some milled LS6 heads. If you're going to do that much, I'd just get a different cam anyways.
you can get cams for your motor, it's just a very in-depth installation just like any other motor. If you're very mechanically inclined and you're not afraid to open up the motor then you'll be ok. Call Comp Cams and they'll hook you up with what you need for the cam swap.
i have one, wat cam do u reccommend, and how much do you think the total will be? with this the truck will sound like its wanting to turn off etc right
I looked at some of the comp cams packages and something that's a 200-210 duration would be good for you and be drivable without a tune. You'll have to get the cam, valve springs, retainers, and maybe lifters. Just call comp cams and they'll hook you up.
alright thanks will do, its better to have a fast and badass sounding truck first then the appearance comes into play? casue people are gonna be like damn that truck needs a paint job but when they get ther asses handed to them they wont say shit
k they told me to get the, thumper 279 t,and valve springs 1,250 all this for 287.99 it totals out is this good? but my truck has two switches in the middle of the throttle body meaning its fuel injected he told me to make it carburated again
yea it would be best to convert it to a carb setup because it's easier to tune than the TBI setup. Sounds like a good deal, just make sure everything gets installed right and don't cut any corners.
do you think a TB stall which is 2400-2600 will be good for this cam?? oo and did you change pushrods? any 1/4 mile times??? is it single cab or what

5.3 is a 325
bore-3.78"
stroke-3.622"
displacement=(3.1415/4)*(3.78^2)*3.622*8 =325.1711 in^3
or bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x # of cylinders 3.78 x 3.78 x 3.622 x 8 x .7854 = 325.17
GMPP calls it the "LS327" because it is rated at 327 horsepower

jmecrg 1 year ago
The 5.3 is a 323, and the 4.8 is a 293
It's simple math. Divide the cc's (ie 4800) by 16.38 an you'll get your answer.
The hot cam with all the parts and install I spent about 750.
Jakebdb56 1 year ago
@Jakebdb56 depends on which 5.3l you have, you have 323, but the l33 is 325 5328/16.38 = 325
TrueAPBT15 1 year ago
@Jakebdb56 5.3's are 325 cubes; have one now and previous '05 Sierra owner's manual stated 325cu in. Instead of using that one factor for all, figure it out by actually multiplying Pi x r sqrd (radius of bore sqrd) x H (stroke) x 8 (# of cyls)... 3.1416 x 1.89 x1.89 x 3.62 x 8 = 324.99 cubic in.

Yeah hopefully this next week I'll have a good idle clip and maybe a burnout video after I get the gears broken in.
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
Sound great. It should be suprisingly quick for a pick up. Can't wait till you have a video of you truck with the new cam and trans in it. I need to post video of my 74 Chevelle on here for you to see once I drop in the carbed LQ9 i just finished building for it.
BigRed10287 2 years ago
Yeah that should be nice running a carbed LQ9. The truck feels great with the 3000 stall, but I destroyed the stock rearend last week. A Detroit Truetrac will be going in tomorrow along with 4.10 gears :)
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
Just a little update: Installed the TR224 cam today and everything runs great. I got everything tuned and ready to roll for my transmission install tomorrow. The transmission should hold to about 600hp at the crank. I'm also going to run a Yank TT3000
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
I have a question. Did you port the heads or change them out too? I know you have a complete diffrent head than a 4.8 lr4 motor, but do ls heads also fit? is there any coolant passages taht might be restricted? I have a 4.8l and i want to bore it out and stroke it to a 5.3l and cam it but i was just wondering. IM new at engine building so sorry.
Davaith 2 years ago
It's useless to port stock truck castings honestly. Just find some LS6 heads aka 243's. They flow very well and if you get them decked at a machine shop they'll do better. All Gen III Ls heads will fit on any Gen III motor. It's no use to stroke a 4.8L. They have the same bore (I believe) but use a different crankshaft/rods. You're better off just saving for a LQ9 (6.0L)
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
ok cool nice to know, I am studing how to build engines, i dont knw everything, but i have the jist of it. Thanks for the advice.
Davaith 2 years ago
sounds great!!
whats it run???
3rdgenZ 2 years ago
I never got a chance to run it at the track or even dyno it. The transmission gave way about a week after the cam was in there. I should have done a shift kit and servo before the cam, but I learned from my mistake now.
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
im looking at the gm hotcam kit with the ls6 spring for my 6.0l, i know your spos to change your lifters but did you have to change your rockers for this?
scuba5475 2 years ago
You don't have to change lifters or rockers at all. Just swap the springs, cam, and pushrods and you'll be good to go. 7.400" pushrods are a must if you want to spin it past 6k'ish
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
Just a little update, I've since been running the stock cam but with a few changes. In a few weeks I'll have a fully built transmission with a yank TRT3000 stall and a new cam. I'm going to swap the springs to comp 918's (the new kind) and run a TR224 specs are 224/224 .563/.563 on a 112LSA
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
If u want to Swap to the new cam, u just have to change the springs right? Cause im gonna get a "TR Blower" - 214/230 .601/.579 117 LSA and i was wondering what springs are the best?
assassinq8i 2 years ago
You need to swap out the pushrods for hardened pushrods. The TR Blower cam is good especially if you want to go forced induction some day. If you're going all motor I'd just run a TR220 or something. As far as springs are concerned. For a daily driver I wouldn't run dual springs, but 918's are kind of a happy medium. The new 918's are fine so far, *knock on wood*. I just put a set in my truck.
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
The TR Blower has the same specs as the Cheatr Cam they have which doesnt have a loud idle? "CheaTR" - 214/230 .601/.575 117 LSA it says in their site that i need double valve springs and titanium retainers?
assassinq8i 2 years ago
I got My cam... Lift .630/.644 Duration 215/231 Lobe 118.. What do u suggest me getting? i already have patriot gold springs...do i need to get hardened pushrods?
assassinq8i 2 years ago
Definitely get hardened pushrods. That's a pretty big cam honestly. It won't lope too much because of the high LSA, but the split in duration might make it lope a little. Patriot gold springs are great and last a while, but with that much lift you will need to probably pull them after 10k miles and double check all the springs.

ROYAL PURPLE FLUIDS!? that must have added like 50 horsepower!!!!
gav1224 2 years ago
they did a show on trucks and tested it out. I did give the truck 7 extra hp
jameslee522 2 years ago
hell yea it did haha.
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
hows the bottom end? I have a 03 2500HD with a lq4 and this is the cam i was looking to get for it. I have 3" true duals and lost some bottom end there. Thinking this summer gonna get some pacesetters and run 2 1/2" duals with no cats
did you have to change your converter for this cam? I think i read that this cam is pretty much the biggest u can go with stock converter
SeckSeySam 3 years ago
The bottom end isn't impressive at all for most cams out there. That's why most people install at least a 2600 stall to keep in the powerband. I didn't swap my converter, and I wouldn't run anything bigger than this cam with the stock converter. Really a 212/218 low lift is on the edge of being "too big" for the stock converter. You just lose a lot of low end hp/trq going on the plus side of a 220 duration.
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
Definitely one of the best Silverado's I've heard I have an 06 5.3 like yours but I have Shorty tube headers, stock cats/Y-pipe, Super 40 Series (Super truck exit) AFE intake, Superchips Cortex running on 93 tune. Would you recommend Longtube headers and Cat delete?
Smellitp 3 years ago
You'll lose some lowend torque in doing so. Unless you're planning on doing a cam swap or running a higher stall torque converter I wouldn't do it.
Jakebdb56 2 years ago
What did you use for lifters rockers and push rods? im thinking about it for my 03 silverado 5.3
RunyonLewis 3 years ago
Hows your driveablity now? Any problems with starting and staying running. I'm thinking of putting an LS1 hot cam on a 4.8L supercharger 05 silvo. I'm drive it daily during the summer only but still want to go distances and feel confident every time.
Pilwho21 3 years ago
nice truck! I have an 04 sierra 5.3 and i wanna cam it. Which cams should i look into? also could i install it by myself? (I am a gear head so i know how to work on vehicles...but certain things need pro installations)any advice would be nice thanx!
cchili 3 years ago
you could install it by yourself, but some specialty tools make the job easier.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
yeah the new vortec's are pretty tight.i still think it would be a good run. How much more power do you think that cam is putting out.... it sounds soo good.
phillyconner 3 years ago
I dyno'd at 300/300 without the cam, so I'd say with the cam maybe 325-335 depending on the conditions. It screams up top, but there's better grinds out there. I chose the cam because it was low-lift and had a good duration. For low-lift cams it makes good power.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
i just gotta 5.3 to swap into my blazer, since this is your daily driver how much has this affected your gas mileage?
Blackthunder224 3 years ago
I actually saw an increase in highway mileage, especially with my ram air setup I had for a while. I got about 24-26mpg on the freeway cruising at 75, around town I got a little better than 13 lol
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
haha awesome, i love the sound of a cammed motor, but i need to keep it somewhat reasonable too...... guess i know what cam im going with
Blackthunder224 3 years ago
this would be a amazing race with my truck... its almost everything the same cept i have a 97 with a 350. sweet truck man!
phillyconner 3 years ago
too bad it's an old vortec :P
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
what horsepower did you get out of it where do stand at 1/4 mile
ZERO713 3 years ago
I never got to dyno the truck or run the 1/4 because of drivetrain issues (4L60E didn't like it). I would be happy if I got 30 hp at the wheels. This cam's powerband is like a light switch, at 3000 it starts pulling really hard all the way to the shift.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
did you have to change your springs for the swap?
TOOTHPICKPIMPIN 3 years ago
Yeah, the stock springs in my truck are only good to .520 lift. The GMPP Hot Cam kit comes with the blue LS6 springs which are good to .550
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
didnt need a different torque converter?
rialbb 3 years ago 3
I would have benefitted from running a higher stall, but I didn't run one.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
so you drive that daily and in winter and stuff?
rialbb 3 years ago
I'm in Texas, no worries about cold weather here. I did install the cam in the winter, and it ran really good when it was cold out (40'ish).
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
i have a 350 5.7 88? where do i get this done? like wat is needed etc
angelicricky 3 years ago
a new truck, haha
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
? a new truck?
angelicricky 3 years ago
why do u say that
angelicricky 3 years ago
because the 88 motor is a TBI motor, not an LS-based motor. None of the LS parts will fit your motor. TBI motors are terrible and require a good chunk of money to make them quick. If I'm not mistaken, the LT4 Hot
Cam won't work in that motor either. Just do a LS1 swap.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
where do i find one? can i use it with my tranny that i have?
angelicricky 3 years ago
You can find used LS motors on craigslist and a ton of other websites. It's a pretty extensive swap, but you could do a direct swap if you buy a complete motor with PCM/harness. It'll work with your transmission (most likely a 700R4), but the trans will give up sooner or later. An LS1 with the GM Hot Cam and longtube headers will make upwards of 450-475 flywheel horsepower. Even more with some milled LS6 heads. If you're going to do that much, I'd just get a different cam anyways.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
ok, what do u recommend, that i can add to this motor for now/? so it can sound a little cammed
angelicricky 3 years ago
you can get cams for your motor, it's just a very in-depth installation just like any other motor. If you're very mechanically inclined and you're not afraid to open up the motor then you'll be ok. Call Comp Cams and they'll hook you up with what you need for the cam swap.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
well im not mechanically inclined im only 16, and well idont live with my father whom is a really good mechanic, and i dont see him very often
angelicricky 3 years ago
gotcha, see if maybe a buddy is good with cars. If that isn't the case, get a job and pay for a shop to install it.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
i have one, wat cam do u reccommend, and how much do you think the total will be? with this the truck will sound like its wanting to turn off etc right
angelicricky 3 years ago
I looked at some of the comp cams packages and something that's a 200-210 duration would be good for you and be drivable without a tune. You'll have to get the cam, valve springs, retainers, and maybe lifters. Just call comp cams and they'll hook you up.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
alright thanks will do, its better to have a fast and badass sounding truck first then the appearance comes into play? casue people are gonna be like damn that truck needs a paint job but when they get ther asses handed to them they wont say shit
angelicricky 3 years ago
k they told me to get the, thumper 279 t,and valve springs 1,250 all this for 287.99 it totals out is this good? but my truck has two switches in the middle of the throttle body meaning its fuel injected he told me to make it carburated again
angelicricky 3 years ago
yea it would be best to convert it to a carb setup because it's easier to tune than the TBI setup. Sounds like a good deal, just make sure everything gets installed right and don't cut any corners.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
this guy with an ss is gona do it for me he did his and it sounds badass,i dont how much hel charge tho
angelicricky 3 years ago
it's a pretty straight forward install, I just haven't done one on a Gen II block.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
ok well ill keep u updated on the progreess,il post a vid once its done,!
angelicricky 3 years ago
sounds good man
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
itll run faster with the cam right?
angelicricky 3 years ago
yea definitely. have you figured out what carb you're going to run?
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
i have a carb on it right now but it has two switches in the middle of a gray thing? i heard a 4 barrel carb would make my truck haul some ass
angelicricky 3 years ago
Damm, I waited that entire vid to hear it rev up to see what that combo sounded like... why no revs?
Moltixar 3 years ago
I have a video of it revving somewhere, I'll post it if I can find it.
Jakebdb56 3 years ago
how much that cam run you?
blackss2006 4 years ago
that sounds really good!! i just bought a hotcam for mine..but mines a 4.8! hows the driviablity with the hotcam? any other videos of it?
