I can almost feel pain in this song, i wonder if they knew oneday the White Man would steal yet again something that could have made their lives easier. God bless the innocent and hardworking.

The Taiwanese should thank Enigma in making this tune famous. If it's not Enigma, this tune would become history forever. And the Amis would continued be discriminated by the China immigrants.
@bluebear668 well, if Enigma did gave Digang credits at the beginning I would thank them. I think you overestimate Enigma's role in preserving aboriginal music in Taiwan, thought they did bring Difang to public attention. To say without Enigma this tune would be history is an exaggeration. I grew up in Taiwan and am familiar with this tune, and I didn't even know Enigma until my teacher told me.
@bluebear668 True it did kind of leave a mark, but it is a slap in the face to say that Enigma made this tune famous and Taiwanese Aborigines should thank him. The french government and EMI plagerized- Difang and his wife was never credited until much later and even now most people who hears this song thinks 'Native Americans' so we can not say that Enigma made it all better so simply (I have nothing against Enigma, great great artist, nothing against the french, my boyfriend is french)
@terecita06 its only the chant really that was plagarised (as regards what enigma used, please dont think they copied the whole of "return to innocence" or anything else
@bluebear668 Without this beautiful chant, return to innocence would have never gotten so famous. I honestly don't think Difang is interested in fame, just peace, love and happiness.
you can say that again! we should respect eacht other and be kind to nature.
you can come back to Taiwan! I will be a leader and take you to our festival in Taitoung or Hualien. the festivel is vaaaaaary great!!(if you r not mind)
@lynlovesnightwish I am wondering if th Amis are the ancestors of (some) Northern American Indian tribes, as there is the general theory about a migration from Asia across the North Pole / Arctic land mass 10,000s of years ago. It might explain a thing or two.
I've been looking for this song because I was curious how the original chanting was done. I love Enigma, the harsh words they get from the couple's supporters won't change the way I admire them. Let's just see this as a lesson.
Folks- sorry about this troll. He is Asian and went to FSU so he is upset. Gets cursed with little asian dick but not with the Asian brain. Florida State. 100% real. He works at the mall at some fast food place.
Loser in life and a troll. We are watching this clown. He is upset that I went to Harvard but have big dick and a real job.
Although I love Return to Innocence, I must admit that Enigma took away a lot of details in his way of singing that are typical of the asian culture... I prefer listening to this version. Sounds more faithfull to it's origins.
But I could be wrong. I'm not an expert in music from this region.
If Enigma gave credit to where it was earned this man and wife would be superstars! Too bad some crap ass group who plagiarized this work of art took credit for themselves.
this song is huge in southern taiwan!! i heard it when i was 5 years old and that's in 92!! when i heard the song at the olympic in 1996 i thought they used it as recognition Taiwan as a diverse culture, didn't know the asshole stole, "sample", from the Taiwanese couple!!
@kjeromel This is funny.. The indigenous population of the Americas has had almost everything stolen now they are stealing back. Next time you know a Taiwanese person immigrating to the Americas for a better life to live and strive on stolen land i want you to think of this song.
@incognitoct yeah they have a nice vibe i loved the way they was born and died near on the same time it makes things done by them all that more precious
Return to innocence contained those great sounding higher notes in the last part of the song and I know its from taiwan but it does sound like a native american indian chant
Thanks for sharing this. Actually, I just wanted to find out who sang the chanting part in Enigma's "Return to Innocence". But the search brought me here and now I just found out the whole debacle about the plagiarism. Too bad, Enigma's "Return to Innocence" is really good, but I have to say I LOVE Difang's "Elders Drinking Song" a whole lot more.
It's such a shame Enigma has to resort to this method.
@bigkahunaburger55555 Well, Cretu claims that he believed the song was in the public domain. Since it was a very old song, I could see how he might believe that, but it was a specific recording from a CD, so it wasn't. For example, the Statue of Liberty is public domain, but you can still have a copyrighted photo of it. At any rate, Difang was given royalties for the song once the issue was raised. Cretu should have looked into things more carefully, but I think it ended well for all involved.
Actually MsAKSfan, this guy was most likely a Christian. Most Taiwanese aboriginals are today. There was a sweeping "overnight" conversion a few decades back.
Funny, I lived in Taiwan for years, but never heard of this sweeping overnight conversation. The aboriginals belong to a number of separate tribes--I'm not sure why they would all convert to anything at once. About 70% are nominally Christian, but 1). That's mostly the work of missionaries more than 100 years ago and 2). In my experience, Christian aboriginals mix Christianity, traditional spiritual beliefs and Han religions.
Guess you need to study your history better, not to mention current demographics. I still live in Taiwan. Go live with the aboriginals. See for yourself how nominal they are. I've got very close aboriginal friends, and I don't buy your claim that they're all nominal. But you're right, there are different tribes. A few of them remained largely non-Christian.
It's amazing how much this sounds like traditional Native American Indian chants (emphasis on the Enigma song Return to Innocense.) It just goes to show as I have said elsewhere, Indigenous people the world over share so many things in common from spirituality, connection to nature to a "knowing" in a different way than other cultures. And we recognize one another when we meet as a result.
Actually, this guy was very likely Christian. Most aboriginal Taiwanese are. They converted in one mass conversion over the course of a decade or so, about 40 years back.
uh, actually you're wrong. DIfang(The Amis) had this traditional chant before Enigma. Enigma just took a part of this chant and placed it in their song, Return of Innocence.
Not only that, they stole it, they had a #1 hit (one of their few if not only one) because of these people and they gave the people whom they owed the song to nothing.
i actually hate that stupid "return to innocence" line they put in between the chanting of that song, it messes with the groove of the song.
it is said only children of perdition accuse, and it's for a good reason, maybe you might want to consider looking up how the orignal singer was looted and swindled by Corporate America and told "deal with it!" wiki search the drinking song aboriginal chant law suit and read before you accuse innocence of stealing
@68040E no they didn't..-.- Enigma (or their record labe) "stole" it from our country. This is an aboriginal song. It would be as if someone sang part of the national Anthem of the US or whatever and then I would say America stole it from that singer! This song is part of our country and party of our identity and no one will ever take this away.
I watched his performance on TV on this year's Golden Voice Award in Taiwan, which took place just two days ago, and thought I must listen to this voice again! Thanks for the video. It's awesome.

sayyid14 1 year ago
@lynlovesnightwish I am wondering if th Amis are the ancestors of (some) Northern American Indian tribes, as there is the general theory about a migration from Asia across the North Pole / Arctic land mass 10,000s of years ago. It might explain a thing or two.

I've been looking for this song because I was curious how the original chanting was done. I love Enigma, the harsh words they get from the couple's supporters won't change the way I admire them. Let's just see this as a lesson.

Too bad some crap ass group who plagiarized this work of art took credit for themselves.

this song is huge in southern taiwan!! i heard it when i was 5 years old and that's in 92!! when i heard the song at the olympic in 1996 i thought they used it as recognition Taiwan as a diverse culture, didn't know the asshole stole, "sample", from the Taiwanese couple!!
kjeromel 1 year ago 3
@kjeromel This is funny.. The indigenous population of the Americas has had almost everything stolen now they are stealing back. Next time you know a Taiwanese person immigrating to the Americas for a better life to live and strive on stolen land i want you to think of this song.

Return to innocence contained those great sounding higher notes in the last part of the song and I know its from taiwan but it does sound like a native american indian chant
Nirvanax25x 1 year ago
Thanks for sharing this.
I wonder what it would have sounded like, had it been embellished with traditional Taiwanese musical instruments....Might have sounded even better.
Maybe someone should try it some day. Is there such a version by any chance?
phungbili 1 year ago
@phungbili
Not very big.
The original song has no instruments.

Enigma can suck it. Plagiarist cunts!
bigkahunaburger55555 1 year ago 15
@bigkahunaburger55555 They paid royalty. Everything you know is plagiarised. Honestly, don't be so quick to judge. It's not like they 'stole' it.
joneselius 1 year ago
@bigkahunaburger55555 Well, Cretu claims that he believed the song was in the public domain. Since it was a very old song, I could see how he might believe that, but it was a specific recording from a CD, so it wasn't. For example, the Statue of Liberty is public domain, but you can still have a copyrighted photo of it. At any rate, Difang was given royalties for the song once the issue was raised. Cretu should have looked into things more carefully, but I think it ended well for all involved.

Actually MsAKSfan, this guy was most likely a Christian. Most Taiwanese aboriginals are today. There was a sweeping "overnight" conversion a few decades back.
jimmyjamesa 2 years ago
Funny, I lived in Taiwan for years, but never heard of this sweeping overnight conversation. The aboriginals belong to a number of separate tribes--I'm not sure why they would all convert to anything at once. About 70% are nominally Christian, but 1). That's mostly the work of missionaries more than 100 years ago and 2). In my experience, Christian aboriginals mix Christianity, traditional spiritual beliefs and Han religions.
mabewa 2 years ago
Guess you need to study your history better, not to mention current demographics. I still live in Taiwan. Go live with the aboriginals. See for yourself how nominal they are. I've got very close aboriginal friends, and I don't buy your claim that they're all nominal. But you're right, there are different tribes. A few of them remained largely non-Christian.
jimmyjamesa 2 years ago
It's amazing how much this sounds like traditional Native American Indian chants (emphasis on the Enigma song Return to Innocense.) It just goes to show as I have said elsewhere, Indigenous people the world over share so many things in common from spirituality, connection to nature to a "knowing" in a different way than other cultures. And we recognize one another when we meet as a result.
MsAKSfan 2 years ago
Actually, this guy was very likely Christian. Most aboriginal Taiwanese are. They converted in one mass conversion over the course of a decade or so, about 40 years back.

68040E 2 years ago
uh, actually you're wrong. DIfang(The Amis) had this traditional chant before Enigma. Enigma just took a part of this chant and placed it in their song, Return of Innocence.
cutestarsofthenight 2 years ago 9
Not only that, they stole it, they had a #1 hit (one of their few if not only one) because of these people and they gave the people whom they owed the song to nothing.
i actually hate that stupid "return to innocence" line they put in between the chanting of that song, it messes with the groove of the song.

it is said only children of perdition accuse, and it's for a good reason, maybe you might want to consider looking up how the orignal singer was looted and swindled by Corporate America and told "deal with it!" wiki search the drinking song aboriginal chant law suit and read before you accuse innocence of stealing
megan8of7 2 years ago
@68040E no they didn't..-.- Enigma (or their record labe) "stole" it from our country. This is an aboriginal song. It would be as if someone sang part of the national Anthem of the US or whatever and then I would say America stole it from that singer! This song is part of our country and party of our identity and no one will ever take this away.
