We're using so much of our money for Medicare, Social Security, etc. already, and when the baby boomers retire we're going to be using everything we have for those things, so anything extra like military spending is going to more money borrowed, and the only way we can keep S.Security going is to raise taxes on the younger generations that have to pay for the enormous number of boomers in retirement. We're using so much of our money for Medicare, Social Security, etc. already, and when the baby boomers retire we're going to be using everything we have for those things, so anything extra like military spending is going to more money borrowed, and the only way we can keep S.Security going is to raise taxes on the younger generations that have to pay for the enormous number of boomers in retirement. I don't have cable, so I don't know why you're talking about CNN

Communism is group ownership of capital and sounds like it will work. It leads to the loss of work ethic and results in a much poorer distrubution of wealth than capitalism. So if you dont elect Obama he will merely go back to the rich life he was living while McCain ruins YOURS. Why raise taxes? I can think of a few reasons: How about reducing the fiscal deficit that has us in a vulnerable position against the Chinese? How about the dangers of a fiscal deficit for inflation, which poses just as much of a risk to economic well-being as a recession does. How about the argument that progressive tax regimes facilitate equitable growth - stopping the trend towards inequality in this country? raising taxes doesnt raise revenues studies have shownt hat really when the top rate is above 30% it has little difference cause when the top rate goes up there is more cheating, less incentive to make etc... The government doesnt have a revenue problem it has a spending problem anyhow

I suppose I just disagree with such a dogmatic attack of the state. It has played a central role in promoting well-being in this country, only within the past 40 years has this radical vision of government become popular. You are aware that fiscal spending got us out of the depression, right? Just because the gov't has failed on some occasions, doesn't mean we should let the market rule. it means we should find better state solutions and new mixes with innovative social institutions.

So, "the market works in the long term", but what does it work for? An unfettered market works for wealth creation and accumulation, inequality and environmental degradation. We are seeing these effects with increasing inequality in the US and around the world, and environmental degradation of which climate change is just one component. You're missing the point. Market capitalism and traditional economics view the environment as an infinite asset - property rights are part of the solution (whether individual or communal), but we must change the way these systems are valued. Yes - communism is extremely destructive, it's state-run capitalism. The goal is accumulation, but differs from market capitalism in that the state, rather than the market sets the prices. The illusion that accumulation can be infinite must be revealed.

wbarre, does the name stand for wilkesbarre? If so, you are probably a Pennsylvanian, as am I and you know I speak the truth about towns and cities along the turnpike, and western PA. These areas are pretty isolated and standoffish and there are lots of trailers, mountain cabins and guns.
