As good as this series is, I still can't stop thinking that classical Kung Fu has some short comings.. Too much fixed moves and too much vulnerability to attacks. Anyways, the series is really good (considering that I am watching this series for the first time).
@gamekash I don't know where you got your information about too many fixed moves, but you are wrong. If that's the way you learned it, then you had a lousy teacher. Real kung fu teaches you to adapt to your opponent. It's also open to interpretation by the practitioner so no two people will do it exactly the same way. That's real kung fu. That's real fighting.
i enjoyed this posting, but i wonder ( as a life-long martial artist ) how many young men have recv'd severe ass-whoopin's from trying to do this after watching shows like this?
Just figured out why I loved Cain so much.....he's like a version of Spock, physically / mentally superior to everyone else, yet humble. (well, spock had his moments) lol!
I was 15 when this seres started. From the first show I was hooked. From top to bottom this was a very well-done show. In every possible way - music, atmosphere, pace - they created an authentic representation of a foreign culture that fascinated us all, especially the young men. Often when I see a re-run of a show that I watched as a boy, I'm disappointed that it is not as interesting in my adulthood as it was as a kid. That is not the case with Kung Fu. It is as good as ever.
@mediamannaman I was 7 when it debuted here. I haven't seen this show for ages. Watching it now I was expecting it to be a cheesy 70's show, but no! It's very well done. Someone put some thought and effort into this series. My thoughts pretty much match yours.
Thanks to the poster for putting this up - very cool.
Thank You for posting this entertainment/wisdom ..I look forward to viewing the Tao of Kung Fu in your videos soon..Take Care..."Peace whenever possible, Anything is..." Medley
thats horrible ... well all is not lost because now u dont have to put up with idiotic commercials or television in general ... i HATE television i dont even own one.
after watching this, i am going out to buy the complete 3 seasons on dvd, good post , thank you for your efforts, david will most likely have a new generation of fans now after his death RIP
I think you're mistaking the characters Bruce Lee played and the legend that built up around him both during and after his life for Bruce Lee the man. In the study of all martial arts disipline is key and disipline doesn't go hand in hand with arrogance. If he hadn't been a movie star and was left instead to run his dojo and develop Jeet Kun Do people would probably have a different impression of him. Still, I can't picture anyone but Caradine as Caine.
I saw in a bruce lee bio movie that this series was his concept, and he wanted to play caine - nothing against david carradine, this made his career; but what a difference it would have made!
You're repeating an urban legend. The claim that this was Bruce Lee's concept came from Lee's wife, well after Lee was dead. There's no reason to believe it's actually true. Lee WAS considered for the role but the studio preferred Carradine because they wanted a more quiet, solemn character, one Lee wouldn't play very well.
You're absolutely correct. Eventhough Lee was truly a great martial artist, he was known more world wide, from his movies, as a practioner of the physical, combative side of martial arts and the character Caine is supposed to be a priest, a philosopher and a man of peace hardly the image of Bruce Lee and that is why the producers of "kung Fu" chose someone like David Carradine for the part.
Thanks for backing up my claim, and thank you for posting these videos. I think Lee would have suffered had he been cast as Caine - as you say well, the role goes against what Lee is famous for... the role requires someone who comes off as both wise, and yet naive (to the western world) and Carridine plays that so well!
Nope, it's not an urban legend. See the book "Letters of the Dragon", a collection of Bruce Lee's correspondence. Included is the letter he wrote to the head of the television network, asking that they pay him $25,000 for creating the idea of the series Kung Fu.
The show hid the message of the Tao within the story and did so for the whole series.

This was a great episode, even better than the one where master made him paint the fence and wax the cars.
