It all depends. The simpler the song, the more distinct each instrument is (Hz-wise), and the better the sample rate, the better chances are of the being possible.
For example, you can sort of remove vocals in Audacity very easily. However, the results vary a lot from song to song.
If it's a song with just bass, a "mid" instrument, and "high" instrument, it'll probably work. With drums, it'll probably get screwed up (due to the traditional drumkit having bass, mid, and high).

Yep... I have done it... remove all of the instruments that you don't want and keep the rest.
