I guess this was just a UK-only type show, since I don't remember seeing any of it n the U.S. But after seeing MANY videos showing the obvious NON singing/playing, I am amazed that it seemed to be so popular. What's the fun in watching a band ACTING like they are singing, especially when most singers aren't very good actors. I suppose everyone has their own preferences however.
hey david, sorry if i sounded a bit harsh! thing is , not many groups played live, but they sometimes did sing live to a backing track, either studio or specially recorded. hence the 'all about eve' fiasco or neil ad-libbing to his 'hole in my shoe'. it was always good to see acts performing tho, given there wasn't much choice otherwise. that said, TOTP had become so cheese-tastic, it didn't really matter that it was so serious or not. we all know it was good crap fun, so no problem!
Actually keef71, you are right and sorry if my comments sounded rather stuffy. Despite many of the acts miming on Top Of The Pops, I used to watch the show every week. It was more a visual than a sound show. I Am sure that if many of the groups did actually Play Live, it would not sound as good and no doubt would effect their chart position.
@DavidG5434 oh balls! everybody knew what TOTP was/meant - hence quo took it in the spirit of things, it was the most influential/watched chart show type thing in the uk - no-one really cared if it was live or not, it was the chart rundown, every thursday evening, a bit crap and outdated even then, but why spoil the party? in them days, an appearance on TOTP could do some serious chart damage (good or bad), why d'you think so many 'serious' acts would appear on it, week after week?
If you go to the Lick Library website and check out the Rick Parfitt webcast, he explains how it was a setup (about 56min into the webcast). He had seen Rod Stewart & the Faces do something similar and since it was a live transmission, no-one could stop it going to air. (Note the transmission was live, not the playing since the drums continue even after they were trashed.)
I remember watching this at the time and thinking Parfitt looked smashed out of his face and then low and behold he climbs all over Pete Kircher`s kit!! What a star.
I think i saw another of these performances where the drummer fell over without anyone tripping on the drum set.

the bit everyone is missing is, this was supposed to be a live show. The music kept playing even when Rick went over.

Ok pop pickers can you find a video from TOTP archives, not of Slade, featuring Don Powell helping out on drums?

This is Status Quo's 'Okey Cokey' moment... awful! Mind you, they had a few as I recall.
Best thing about this video is, without doubt, Jim Lea pretending to play bass on this TOTP mimed appearance. LOL
