The firearm Caan's character carried was a Smith and Wesson m640 , 5 shot, 357 magnum probably loaded with. 38 caliber from the sound. Its fading, but still a popular weapon with private detectives or wiser off duty cops. You dont want to enter a firefight like THIS with one but using the tactics Caan's character used against the spray and pray technique even out the odds. For self defense the M640 really adds to the conversation. Great movie shootout. Great handy gun.

This shootout is my most favorite! Especially like the part where Benicio is shooting (7 bullets) to the guy who just shot Ryan at 5:15 because B. moves towards Ryan while shooting and we see the great scene with his bullets hitting the window! Then he graps Ryan and wants to pull him away. The music that was added to this all is perfect and awesome. I also like the character that B. plays. Somehow we sympathize with him and B. did a great job! By the way, nice jacket that he was wearing!

I would hate to be in a situation like this and only have a 1911. 7 round mag with one in the chamber is not a great gun for this kind of situation. But to put it plainly, handguns/pistols are not offensive weapons. Pistols are secondary defensive weapons. This is why the american armed forces replaced it for the barreta. More bullets just means you'll land more in a fire fight

@awdc13 Not to be an even bigger jerk, but they did not have star model B's. they had Colt Mrk-IV government series 70's in 9mm luger, but yes you are correct in that being 9mm as oppose to .45 they are 9 round magazines as oppose to 7 rounders. But the 9mm varients were used, because .45 acp blanks are notroious for malfunctioning, and lets be serious witht he quantity of shooting in this scene alone, constant jams would have been dreadfully frustrating, so 9mm were used instead.

This scene and the shootout in Heat are defiantly some of the greatest realistic shootouts of all time. In both movies, they used the actual sounds of the weapons fired instead of manufactured movie gun noise. Both were extremely detailed in the choreography of the shootout.

There is way to many people who complain about this not being realistic. Well it might not be TOTALLY realistic, but it is more realistic then other shootouts I've seen in films. Unlike many other movie shootouts, in this, the heros sorta say gets shot, they people reload their weapons, also in alternative ways because of injuries and they don't always hit their targets.

Now it might just be me, but this is not something I've seen in alot of action movies with shootouts, just sayin.

This movie as realistic as it gets from the group of old ex coppers turned bagmen and they're reliance on revolvers, to the accuracy revolvers have further than 15 yards to kids with semi auto's and they're spray and pray tactics. They're room clearing tactics straight out of a SWAT training class. LoL That Smith and Wesson 640 that Caan has is still a favorite with off duty cops/private detective crowd.

Meh, don't find it so realistic. All the debris from the walls would have injured them somehow, especially the eyes. We're talking about bullets flying at around 270 meters per second for the M1911, and in CQB they don't loose speed at short range.

@lawrencetimmons94 stationary targets aren't shit (paper or not), because they don't move. and you don't need to hit the "dead" center of something in order for the shot to be effective, shooting a person is alot different than shooting a paper target...trust me ;) plus no one forced them to go after the money they knew that it was a mouse trap. they should've tried to conserve they're ammo at least a little bit. like he said, they died alone. they should've thought about that.
