If they stayed independent while not serving up ads, they would have gone down the drain a long time ago. Hell, probably even if they did, because it requires hundreds of millions of dollars to keep it operational. Google still hasn't managed to make YouTube profitable, but at least the ads make sure that it isn't a total loss. Yes, ads suck, but at least they keep YouTube free for everyone.
