I listened to this song at a performance of Yardena Arazi a couple of weeks ago. Since i presumed it was a Russian song (like many Israeli old songs) i luckily found it on youtube. Since then we listen to it every night a couple of times before bed. It is the most beautiful Russian song i know, also due to L. Zykina. I was surprised to find out that the only word the two versions have in common is....mama

@eilonj - I'm agree with you, it's amazing song, like more other Russian folk songs.

And Zikina perfprms it in a truth folk way. I think that like the Italian folk (Sicilian, Napolitan and other) songs, listening a really othentic performance you can feel the tradition of the folk, the nature it belongs to, the smells, the food...

It says a lot about the soul of the nation and the mentality fo the folk, cause thouse songs and the style are very very old actually...
