It isn't too hard if you invest the time. There are awesome tutorials by 3DBUZZ that are easy to grasp and are straight forward.

Hey I've been lookin everywhere but I can't figure out how to change my player character in udk. I basically want to add my own characters and weapons for the player. Any way to do this in udk or in kismet?
