I have to admit, if the Vulture RL ever came to the US, I probably think it would be the olny RL that would give the Leach 2R a run for it's money!! But having said, I would have to observe both of their backpack cycle performance side by side in bulk and commerical collection real closely!!
The one thing they have in common is when the blade opens at the beginning of the cycle, it just looks as though it is going to come down and drag you in as well!
True! After seeing the Leach2R crushing that small car on the CRT site, imagine what damage the Vulture can do to anything bigger!! Jesus, I probably would get nightmares lol!!!
Having said that I haven't seen a Revopak working in anger in Britain for 20 years now....apart from a preserved one a couple of years ago. There are moves with a bunch of guys I keep in contact with to bring one back from Malta and restore it.
Vulture (or GPM as it's now called) is popular - only trouble is more and more local authorities now have completely closed back trucks now so you can't see the packer working....loose bag collection is getting rarer and rarer now.
Closed back trucks are very boring but I understand, it's all about safety so as the liability concerns become greater, the trucks become more boring...:(
The same is happening here in the states...
We used to run MSLs for residential waste for the most part here in CA. but now, almost all ASLs and even the MRFs and landfills are set-up where private vehicles dump in a different area so it is very hard to get close to the trucks as they unload...
Yeah, those are pretty nice but also very rare here now. The US has gone mostly to ASLs for residential waste and FLs for commercial. Both are boring designs to me...
I reckon its some form of plastic that as the packer went back into standby got pushed against the hydraulic ram causing severe splittage therefore casing an energy busrt that launched said plastic out of the packer.
Vultures have a "ramp" (or girdle as Geesink call it), which has to be raised whenever you are using the binlifter. It acts as sliding surface for the garbage to run down into the hopper when the bins are emptied, but also spoils the view when it's up.
see my comment above. Look at the GPM2/Vulture clip on the Classic Refuse Trucks channel to see a Vulture in action no binlifter fitted, the chute/ramp as you can see is missing - and gives it a really low rave rail - American style.
That's probably why they always have the chute thing in the up position as is the case here, which of course spoils the view. Any bin men watching like to comment?
There's a knack to a GPM/Vulture. Fill to just below bottom of packer blade, press start, throw more bags under the blade as it opens and you don't make a mess.... I cut my teeth on these and they're better than Norbas, Phoenixes and miles ahead of anything by Heil. Plus they run continuously with that chute up....
Vultures are popular up here for bulk refuse as you can see in this video...spoke to a binman a couple of years ago who said the same thing; that the longevity of Norbas in particular is rubbish (pardon the pun!)
same. we ave a vulture comin round our place an it dusnt work properly so they have to shove all the burst binbags back in. i fink its cuz our binman fills it up too quickly :S
Burst binbags? Becuz here in singapore, the bags are usually large. Im not sure about the compactor name, should be ZENITH engineering. The crusher comes down so fast that the air trapped in the bag literally burst it, causing a sudden loud "pop" sound, as loud as a large balloon bursting. I've seen old netballs filled with air being crushed too, that also popped loudly!
i very happy about this video

The only RL more fun to watch than a Vulture is a Revopak, and those are getting pretty tough to find these days!
Of course, we don't have either type of truck here in the US....

Glad to hear that one is being restored!

HEADS-UP!
That stuff does not want to stay in the truck and is shooting back out like missiles...LOL!
These Vultures are the coolest RL trucks yet!
Wish we had them here in the US...:)

Having said that - I was in the US a year ago and loved seeing a Leach 2R in the flesh for the first time ever!

Man if that guy hadn't been as quick as he was (at about 0:30) he would probably have been hit in the head with that exploding piece of wood!

I think it's a bit of expanded polystyrene actually.

Hey, I was wondering...what do you mean by 'chute'??

Geesink is the God of all RCV's. Having an all Geesink fleet they are miles ahead of anything. Nothing comes close.

Be fun to get one of them packing building waste - you see that a lot in London now.

In fact from 2002 onwards packer cycle is about 20 secs, same as most other "Normal" dustcarts

Our oldest one in service at my depot is a 1989 'F' reg. The body's brilliant, but the old RS Dennis trucks are pigs to drive....

Its becasue Singapore's dustcarts have more hydraulic power than England. Its becuz you have bigger binbags.
