you have to stare directly at the "X" the entire time and don't move your eyes at the photo switch. What it does is fatigue certain photo-receptors in your eyes so that when you see the black and white photo your eyes can only see the exact opposite colors of the first photo... (orange/yellow and Blue) which the opposite of is blue-ish and a tan looking color for her skin. It's biology.
