great review, i wish i would have found your review before i bought this book, i completly agree with you in that this book isn't very good. Most of the models in the book look terrible (blueish-grey ugly orcs anyone?). Thanks for the review
Carrots don't actually help your eyesight or give you nightvision, they actually contain a vitamin. A deficiency of this vitamin basically means you can't see in the dark at all.
in 1 of those books there is a custom drednaught at the end of the book, i have painted an incredably good drednaught witch is by far my best work of art but its missing something, the drednaught in the book has the head of a tyranid on the left arm and i thaught that that would be a great idea 2 do 2 my dreadnaught. if u can recognise what type of tyranid head that is, could u plz tell me so i can pick one up at THE GAMES WORKSHOP? thx. when i get 1 i will connect it, paint it and show every 1!
actuly the newer version of the how to paint citadel is much better i read it and the technuiqes progress through the book and get harder and harder so its really good and get the new one i recomend it
it looks like there is more text detail in it and the pictures in teh Foundry book look really good. The GW books are helpful , but more pictures could be put in ..
i got the foundry book its not very good. its better than the GW one but it still doesn't give you competition winning techniques. Its just a rank and file/commander gaming painting book.
It's not trying to teach you how to win competitions, if you want that, there are some PDFs (you have to pay for them) and DVDs that are excellent for that.
no, its another company that produces minatures, u know like how Panasonic and Phillips both produce 48*inch tv's. . .Same shit different smell basicaly speaking
I've got the GW book, the newer version of that book and also the Foundry book just recently, and I think the older GW book is definitely the weaker of the three. I think what GW tend to do is aim their painting books at the people who are starting out and JUST at that level, not really going any further in order not to "confuse" people. With the standard of painters GW currently have (such as Darren Latham) writing the White Dwarf Masterclasses, I'm sure they could make a far better book.
The Foundry book is fantastic and Amazon actually carries it now for around $26. Also note, Kevin Dallimore is a great guy who will happily answer any questions you send him.
I must agree with you on the GW book and the foundry book I don't know. Nice vid, I always wondered about some painting books but I never got myself one since I always thought you have to try, instead of read. That's how you learn it, but these books are incredibly useful for beginner painters. You might see some more comments from me on other vids of you:)
Hi, I was just wondering if you use washes on your miniatures. A lot of people said that you can get great results if using washes one your miniatures. I don't know if I should use washes.
Hi there. It depends on which definition of "Wash" you use. There is a lot of confusion about Washes, Inks, and Glazes in the mini world. Generally speaking, a "wash" is considered simply painting with very thin paints (almost transparent). I do use washes in this regard.
However, if the definition of a "wash" that you're using suggests covering the figure with thinned paint to "shade" the model, then no, I do not do that.
I'll be discussing this in more detail in an upcoming DVD.
The new book is setup alot better. It covers the new paints and the new washes. Plus the GW book is aimed for a nice tabletop army. If you want a book for a very nice display model I like(and own, it is a hard-cover book) the Forge World book Imperial Armour: Model Masterclass vol. 1. It retails for about $50 ant I think is well worth it.
and as far as the elf is concerned, a lot of people, myself included love extreme highlighting and that's what the face looks like to me. They are miniatures that are viewed from a few feet away most of the time, so with extreme highlights it gives the viewer excellent contrast in the eyes and helps things stand out... just my 2 pennies.
I certainly don't mind the extreme highlighting method. In fact, that's the method that Kevin Dallimore uses in the Foundry book that I like. It's not my particular style, but I do agree there is room for it. My problem with the GW book is that the painting is very sloppy, as if the painters had better things to do than paint the figures and just wanted to get done with them.
Definitely i agree, even with the new GW book, some things do look a little rushed.... Again like i said, its king of hard to make out in the vid, It just looked like a bleached bone highlight, with seems to be GW's end's all highlighting color, but can be very effective when viewed from a distance.. you should check out their new book, I think its a lot better than the old one, and please no-one look at White-dwarf for painting tips unless you play space marines. GW loves space marines.
The new GW book is great, its very well organized, and i like it a lot, its pretty much only for total beginners though as it pretty only much runs through simple techniques and stuff most painters already know. although an experienced painter can still pick up a few things here and there
For what it's worth, the new book is organized more logically... then again, from what you stated about the Foundry book, I'll be looking for that one, for sure. Thanks for the reviews!
Hey Chris, I'm with you buddy. I may be new to painting entirely BUT I have noticed what you are trying to share with folks.. I was able to find the 1st book for FREE on scribd. Rummaged through the pages and noticed the same things..including how goofy that Dark Elf's face..LOL..I'll look for the second book. Sorry to hear about your eyes and glad they are getting better.. Definately one of your fans..You have an awesome manner of teaching..Thanks for sharing. Jim
I just picked up an old 2004 Citadel catalog for $2.00. In the margins they have all kinds of great painting tips and color suggestions. Many of which are copied right out of the first book you showed. It's a pretty cheap alternative to buying the first book. 1072 pages.
I'm pretty sure the new GW book with the Elf on it is just the same book but they added a section on using their new airbrush. I could be wrong but I think that's what I heard.
