For those too young or who have not had music appreciation 101: This is the seminal 'minimalist' piece. Its operating premise, the organization of materials - and how it all works, making the sound it makes, is big-time landmark. Steve Reich, John Adams, etc come afterwards, more than fully aware of this amazing composer. It is a very 'durable' piece, taking a lot of widely varied performances in stride while remaining itself. That, folks, is one sort of genius.
I think if you are hearing ugly noise, then you are trying to hear the piece as one ensemble. Typically you want to hear an ensemble such as an orchestra as one; in this, you want to try to hear the separate lines coming together. This is fun to play, though you have to have some really good performers to not listen to anything but the pulse.
you kidding?! this is like the best recording on youtube (in my opinion). this piece is great for a minimalist piece. seeing the "score" helps too though =) follow the link in the description and read the blurb...totally makes it a more amazing piece.

Terry Riley himself said this was the best version made of In C. You can buy it on amazon.

A 20th century masterpiece. Nothing short of purified, unadulterated genius.
