I'm Blessed to have Cedar Walton playing great piano on my new all-star CD called ANGEL FACE. Cedar plays his butt off, as he does on this video as well. Vibist Milt Jackson enters on the 2nd song and played his butt off. ( RIP).
i am so blessed to have seen these guys playing together in person!! and i am very grateful! this video seems like it might be older than '85 though. thanks so much for posting, ms. makpjazz57!
i had the great good fortune to work opposite cedar wakton on a number of seasons at ronnie scotts and also with milt jacksom with brian lemon on piano. jackson loved brians work and on subsequent occasions gordon beck on piano. sadly, brian lemon can no longer play due to crippling arthritis in his hands and gordon hardly works now due to illness, ray brown and milt jackson are no longer with us. thankyou YOU TUBE for making so much listening and viewing possible. ken baldock 2009
Great stuff -- thanks for posting it. I watched this on PBS that New Year's Eve. After Milt Jackson leaves, Gerry Mulligan joins the trio and they play "Georgia On My Mind" and "St. Louis Blues." More outstanding jazz. Would be another great post if you have it.
The reason I'm puzzled is that I had thought the Modern Jazz Quartet had returned to performing as a group, or if not, then this is Milt Jackson on his own and the MJQ returned in the late 80s.
Milt Jackson has always taken time off from MJQ to play with his own group in a more swinging, informal setting where he could stretch out. And these are his favourite musicians.
I do know he loved Cedar Walton and Mickey Roker: they are on CTI recordings I have (Goodbye) It Don't Mean A Thing If You Can't Tap You Foot to It is a must etc. And Milt loved stretching out like this and not having to follow John Lewis' very exacting arrangements all of the time. I was trying to figure out the chronology. Thanks.

Thanks, hgmoore. I've corrected the spelling and I should have known better!

Mickey Roker's name is misspelled in the title. Note the correct spelling.

Hmmm...not sure, but I do know that Cedar, Ray and Mickey did perform together quite often.
