@ungodd There are some people that NOT even GOD ALMIGHTY could satisfy! It does not matter how flawless someones performance is. Unfortunately, there will ALWAYS be some person who has to complain.
Except for jealousy towards the talent displayed or a simple misclick (can happen ;) ), there is no reason that could possibly have anyone thumb this down.
Despite the seeming simplicity of this piece it is not easy piece to play at all. This interretation is excellent in all respects - superbly done - thank you - H
A very, very good performance of a rather nasty tricky piece. The only wonder I have is why the simplistic tone colour? With all the resources at your disposal, all of the range of possibilities, why stick to one rather bland sound? Each of those voices should be highlighted as they enter, and the pedals should be (and usually are) emphasized. Bach would have given his left testicle to play that instrument with all it's tonal flexibility.
Listening to this makes me wanna be an organist. I could skip dringking and smoking if I in return was given the ability to play as you do. So impressed. Thanks.
@lorganiste There's nothing artificial about the reverb. What you are hearing is exactly what was recorded in the building. Whether or not sampled sound is "synthetic" is entirely up to you.
@carltabet I totally agree. We have to keep in mind, when this was composed, organs were huge mechanical instruments and often it took some time until pipes closed and opened. So usually things were played slower. Furthermore old organs often needed a lot more force to press the keys. Nevertheless, this is a wonderfull and nice interpretation.
Please clear this up for me as I can't find anything said here that does .... where does the Hinz organ come into this - are we actually hearing an historic organ in the Netherlands or (as the visual suggests) an electronic instrument in someone's lounge room? Whichever, the sound and performance is first-class but I'd love to know which is which! Thanks
@grizzlyganymede Pretty sure this is a digital instrument, the performer is using the "Hauptwerk" system that makes it sound very close to real pipes.
Probably the best version of Little Fugue I have heard, however it is going to fast. I pretty sure Bach had a slower tempo in mind when writing this peice...
Every time I watch someone playing an organ I am absolutely fascinated by the skill and coordination needed to play this wonderful instrument! Amazing!
Superb performance and recording. I can hear every note distinctly and the pedal entries are lovely. It is good to hear an organist who not only plays the notes but the organ and takes thought of the building as well. And does not play it too fast just to show off. I use my heels whenever it is convenient to do so and if any one does not like the way I play...........
Superb performance and recording. I can hear every note distinctly and the pedal entries are lovely. It is good to hear an organist who not only plays the notes but the organ and takes thought of the building as well. And does not play it too fast just to show off.
I have to agree with everyone else that this is a wonderful and exciting performance. There is a picture of a large pipe organ at the beginning and I was thinking what a beautiful old organ only to see that he is playing an electronic instrument. I hope he is able to take a position at a big church soon where he can use his gifts to inspire and uplift many people.
@Afaral1989 Absolutely right. Technique matters only insofar as it serves producing the right sound. As long as it sounds right, one should play with toes, heels, knees, hockey sticks, or remote controlled nuclear submarines. The question is as moot as the one regarding whether one should use pedals when playing Bach on the piano, or whether to use steel or catgut strings on the violin.
The end justifies the means. As long as it doesn't land you in jail, use whatever you want.
Great performance - and I had no idea it wasn't a pipe organ until the end! Bach would have done whatever was easiest and best to get the right sounds, when pedalling. I remember sitting in the organ loft with George Thalben Ball, who happily tore up the rule book, when it made sense
Very measured performance. I often had to use a metronome with this piece as it tended to run away with me. This is a great piece to play to the Philistines who think Bach is heavy and dull. Lovely crisp sound here. Bravo!
Once again, I love your clarity (speaking of technique, not audio). Even though this is not my favorite rendition of this piece, I could not possibly fault your very polished technique! Bravo!
ok so i just listened to Bish play this fugue and you and guess what...you performance far exceeds bish....if i closed my eyes and just listen...your exercution of this jig is as close to e power bigss i have heard yet....wow.....
Play with TOE and HEEL. Who cares what is "proper". Getting the correct notes at correct values is what matters. This is wonderful. Buthe mordents, grace notes and trills omitted after the beginning I continue: :55 - mordent followed by grace notes 1:09 - pedal mordent 1:32 - mordent & grace notes 2:00 - mordent & grace note (no second grace note) 2:22 - pedal mordent 2:25 - mordent on pedal E 2:36 - mordent & grace notes 2:54 - mordent & grace notes 3:10 - pedal mordent

Hey Rob, This might sound petty but where's your wedding ring? I've watched your hands so much by watching your videos and your hand is naked! Us you-tubers don't miss a thing at times! LOL Thanx and God Bless
I really enjoy your playing, I love the Hauptwerk Virtual Pipe Organ, it sounds amazing. I would like to buy one just like the one you have but I am not sure on how well it feels like a pipe organ. I have a two manual M.P.Moeller pipe organ in my home and it's 20 ranks, and a three manual Allen Renaissance Quantum, so not sure but I might just have to look into the Hauptwerk system, thanks for posting, I enjoy hearing you play and I play Bach with heels and toes at times too. :) Thanks!
I couldn't agree more! When I listen to JS Bach's music I feel God in all His glory. Each note combines into one greater whole that at the end feels like a prayer answered. It goes without saying, perhaps, that there are days when I have to forego Bach because I don't feel worthy without some sort of preparation, prayer possibly, but meditation at the least. Canb you tell I hold Bach to be the greatest composer of all time!
Indeed! Felix Hell suggested that, particularly with Bach's music, there is no line between sacred and secular, that it is all sacred music. Bach wrote "Soli Deo Gloria" at the top of all of his scores.
@Lassannn That point can be taken! Even the Coffee Cantata has a moralistic, religiosity about it. Bach is the greatest composer of all time. I read where a rash of conversion to Christianity came as a result of more Bach recordings becoming available in Japan. I don't know if that is coincidence or apocryphal, but I can imagine that happening.
@Lassannn That is very true! Even the Coffee Cantata has that moralistic religiosity about it that suggests a bout of Lutheranism struck Bach when he wrote it. That's the most secular piece I can think of off the top of my hat, and it doesn't support an argument for secular Bach works....
Thanks. RE: Toes & Heels - It's a bit of a hot-button question. Some will say that bach is all toes and no exceptions. I personally believe that the technique serves the music, and not the other way around. I played the piece 95% toes, and on the spots where I did use the heel, it's because it seemed awkward to play with toes. Hope that helps!
@stefanussen I think Bach would have used whatever worked -- heels, toes, elbows, knees, nose, etc., to get the effect and the counterpoint he wanted. Good performance! Cheers!
@0B0a0c0h0 When I used to play Bach's organ works in my local parish Church after Mass, I would use both toe and heel, this is just the way I taught to play the organ back in 1948
You are very incorrect. Bach should be played with any limb or tool suitable to produce the sound that the interpreter wants to achieve. There's a thin line between historical correctness and pedantry; the former makes one a better artist, the latter is just a bothersome obstacle.
Only when it's part of the work itself, is technique not subordinate to sound. Ravel's Concerto for Left Hand would be devalued if played with 2 hands, to name one example.
Rob and Jasmin: these posts have been so helpful. First of all they make an organist want to practice and that is GOOD. You folks are serious about the organ and the music; that comes through in the quality of what you're doing. I have been a church organist for 43 years; seriously committed to it since 1992. Dozens of students, lots of ups and downs. I get to practice and play on a 1916 Casavant. I'm getting this fugue ready for Pentecost; just because. Keep up the good work.
As far as reverb is concerned, 3 to 5 seconds is not too bad. St. Pauls in London is about ten seconds and it really gets difficult to isolate certain stops, which I like to do. It's been a long time since i've been in the S.L. Tabernacle so I don't know how long the reverb is there when the building is empty and when it is full of people. Anybody know?
The Tabernacle's acoustics range from about 3.5 - 4 seconds depending on humidity and how full the building is. If it's totally packed, the acoustics become significantly dampened.
To what website could you direct me if I wanted to find out more about the hardware? I would like to know how much the hardware costs. I won't be buying one soon, but definitely one day!
WOW!!! That really sounds amazing. I couldn't believe it when I saw that it was a digital organ. Tell me, is this Hauptwerk Virtual Pipe Organ just the software or does it include the console? I am working on that piece at the moment.
Hauptwerk refers to the software which produces the organ sound. The hardware is from a different vendor; however, I use the term "Hauptwerk Virtual Pipe Organ" to loosely refer to the whole setup.
Way to go Rob. You certainly have a handle on this. I conclude that anyone brave enough to have a go at Bach, especially this rapid little exercise is a courageous person. All credit to you my friend all the way from New Zealand.
Kind regards
Peter.

I'm off to confession. I'm envying my neighbor's pedal technique.

That comment made me smile.
So neat and precise isn't it? Same with the hands. "Jelousy" doesn't even begin to cover it...
OPHYCLIDE 2 years ago 2
@rgeraredz He's Your neighbour? I bet you dont get much sleep at night when he's practicing!

Amazing quality, both in performance and in sound. You don't get this from Johannus organs. Where did you get the console?

Soli Deo Gloria! (Even if this is a secular piece...!)
phainopepla95 2 years ago 2
Indeed! Felix Hell suggested that, particularly with Bach's music, there is no line between sacred and secular, that it is all sacred music. Bach wrote "Soli Deo Gloria" at the top of all of his scores.

to quote JS Bach "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.
So Very true, especially with this music.

@stefanussen The only way it should be.

@phainopepla95 Nothing Bach wrote is secular. :)
Lassannn 1 year ago
@Lassannn That point can be taken! Even the Coffee Cantata has a moralistic, religiosity about it. Bach is the greatest composer of all time. I read where a rash of conversion to Christianity came as a result of more Bach recordings becoming available in Japan. I don't know if that is coincidence or apocryphal, but I can imagine that happening.
phainopepla95 1 year ago

Hope that helps!
stefanussen 2 years ago
@stefanussen I think Bach would have used whatever worked -- heels, toes, elbows, knees, nose, etc., to get the effect and the counterpoint he wanted. Good performance! Cheers!

@0B0a0c0h0 When I used to play Bach's organ works in my local parish Church after Mass, I would use both toe and heel, this is just the way I taught to play the organ back in 1948

@0B0a0c0h0 "correct me if i am incorrect"
You are very incorrect. Bach should be played with any limb or tool suitable to produce the sound that the interpreter wants to achieve. There's a thin line between historical correctness and pedantry; the former makes one a better artist, the latter is just a bothersome obstacle.
Only when it's part of the work itself, is technique not subordinate to sound. Ravel's Concerto for Left Hand would be devalued if played with 2 hands, to name one example.

He's pretty good, not as agressive as Virgil Fox.

Anybody know?
ryorgan 2 years ago
The Tabernacle's acoustics range from about 3.5 - 4 seconds depending on humidity and how full the building is. If it's totally packed, the acoustics become significantly dampened.

To what website could you direct me if I wanted to find out more about the hardware? I would like to know how much the hardware costs. I won't be buying one soon, but definitely one day!
Rabun001 2 years ago
WOW!!! That really sounds amazing. I couldn't believe it when I saw that it was a digital organ. Tell me, is this Hauptwerk Virtual Pipe Organ just the software or does it include the console? I am working on that piece at the moment.
Rabun001 2 years ago
Hauptwerk refers to the software which produces the organ sound. The hardware is from a different vendor; however, I use the term "Hauptwerk Virtual Pipe Organ" to loosely refer to the whole setup.

I seriously think this was written for the harpsichord
Biff947 2 years ago
