  • i want to get the best compatability too...

  • Wow. Nice vidz.

  • thanks for the bsod lol

  • You probably figured this out after you uploaded your video, but it's not ACHI rather AHCI. Remember the middle two words stand for Host Controller. HC.

  • @Ub3rSk1llz I can see you tried. You got the one at 0:41 and at 4:11.

You completely missed the one at 1:18 - 1:27, and you got it wrong in the annotation at 2:00 - 2:10, and at 3:19.

These are easy fixes, so feel free to fix and then delete my comment.

  • @redmatrix Not my video.

  • @redmatrix ah, thank you very much for gathering all the times for me. I'll be fixing it in the morning =)

  • worked great for me! thanks boxeo

  • I didnt install it in achi mode and when i did it in the bios i bsod till i change it back... is it because i have an ssd and 2 hdds?

  • @toXns did you change the registry before you changed to achi mode in the bios?

  • @BoxeoP4P ya... whats your Windows rating on the vertex 2 ssd? i have the same one...

  • @toXns 7.4 for primary hard disk: Disk data transfer rate...can you check in your bios to make sure that the primary boot drive is on the right ssd? After doing this, sometimes it will default a boot drive that isn't a boot drive.

  • @BoxeoP4P Did that...still bsods during boot up or when i do anything strenuous. What are the rest of your specs? I have the same mobo aswell

  • @toXns legacy ide harderives? they are 2 samsung spinpoint 1tbs

  • @toXns hmm, sorry. I'm out of options. I don't get why it would bsod on boot sometimes and not other times and bsod when doing "strenuous" tasks. Last thing I would say is to make sure you have all the latest drivers for everything, including your ssds. If you figure it out, let us know!

  • @toXns Are you using any legacy IDE for hard drives? Worse case scenario just leave it as is. It isn't the trouble for the performance gain. My specs right now are intel 2600k, asus WS revolution mobo, vertex 2 ssd 60 gb boot drive, WD hard drive

  • @toXns Hi, you're right lol. I thought I made the correction a long time ago. Thanks!

  • @toXns No it's because your windows is installed in IDE mode, therefore you can't change it. If you want to change to ACHI you have to format your computer.

  • ok so if i do a fresh install do i install windows first then setup the registry and bios or vice versa?

  • @vash30022003 You only do this method if you did not set it up during your fresh OS install

  • BoxeoP4P liked your tutorial but how is my slave/drive (non SSD) affected by enabling AHCI?

  • @komododr Should have the same affect on the hard drive (non ssd) as long as it uses sata interface connection. Hope that answered your question.

  • registry editing is for those who did not an ahci clean setup?

  • @KostasTheGhost Yup, that's correct.

  • @BoxeoP4P What is this thing does?!

  • @dani41396 Gets a little extra performance out of your sata drive!

  • can i directly change to achi mode befor installing the OS?

  • @xfx6 yup

  • isn't it recommended to have the drive in IDE mode for firmware updates and then changing it to ahci

  • what does this do to make it better? trying to find answer in the comments.

  • Is there any way to enable ahci on a 6-year-old dell bios?

  • @TheNewbpowner123 For starters, does it have sata ports on the motherboard? If not, answer is no

  • @BoxeoP4P Yes, i just checked.

It has a one blue and one black port.

(guessing they are sata2 and sata1) (if sata1 exists :p)

  • @BoxeoP4P I believe you mean pata ports? Sata ports are the only ports that use ahci...

  • @Scorxcho Nope, sata is correct

  • @BoxeoP4P ahci is only compatible with sata ports, so no.

  • @BoxeoP4P Not to be mean or anything, but if you do a quick wikipedia search, it describes in detail that ahci is FOR sata ports.

  • @Scorxcho This is true. That is why you want to use ahci mode for ssds. If nothing was changed by the user, it's usually defaulted to IDE mode.

  • I am running windows 7, the build is as follows:

    Corsair Obsidian Series 800d Case, Intel 510 series 120GB SSD; WD Caviar Black 1TB, Intel Core I7 2600k; ASRock P67 Extreme 4, Zalman CNPX11S Extreme CPU Cooler, EVGA GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi); CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 15000) , CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V v2.2 Power Supply, and Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional

  • @Scuurge Looks like an awesome build =) Have fun building it!

  • @BoxeoP4P Haha I think I went overboard for my first build. No way to learn like jumping in the deep end though right? Then again I may drown lol. Thanks for the input.

  • @Scuurge Hey, I did the exact same thing as you on my first build, lol

  • Bulding a new system with an Intel 510 series 120gb SSD, and a WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM drive, should I use the SSD only for windows? What is needed for running both drives, and having the main storage on the 1TB WD drive? Thanks in advance.

  • @Scuurge hi Scuurge, I have a similar set up but with a 60GB SSD instead. With your 120GB SSD you'll have more playing room to work with to add games and other programs on top of having your operating system installed on it. Nothing should be required to do this, i.e. plug and play. Just install the OS on the ssd and you can then chose where to install everything else such as drivers, games, etc. The new Z68 motherboards support SSD caching but thats another story. Hope that helped!

  • @BoxeoP4P Awesome, I was hoping that was the case. The thing I was worried about was drive life span due to writing to the SSD? I just read alot of forum posts on having your user accounts on a separate drive and putting only aplications and the OS on the SSD. This is my first self built PC, and I am a little nervous. Trying to get as much knowledge as possible before the components arrive in a few days.

  • @Scuurge I wouldn't worry about that at all. It's very common practice now for people to use a small capacity SSD for the OS and everything else on a regular HD. Also you didn't say which windows OS you will be using, I suggest windows 7 as it is the only one that currently supports TRIM.

  • There are things that should be disabled too like Superfetch, etc. You should mention that.

  • @SeymoarYaTutz thanks for your input seymoar. I'll make a note of it, but i beleive it gets disabled in windows 7 if you install a ssd or at the least nothing touches the ssd (such as defrag, etc).

  • My SSD is detected by my comp but I'm unable to use it, I guess I need to enable it or somehow turn it on, will following these steps solve this problem? I'm using this SSD as a secondary drive, for games and whatnot, I was told to quickformat by a friend but right clicking does not give me that option, hopefully you read this msg.

  • @CoolGod Hi Cool, nope doing these steps should NOT fix this problem. Or at least it shouldnt. Your SSD should be plug and play. When you say it is not detected, do you refer to the bios or in the "my computer"? Check to see if you can see it in the bios, if not see if you can select it for your second drive. Also, download the LATEST drivers to see if that helps as well. If all fails, test it in another computer if u can. It may be faulty if the things above do not work. Hope that helps! gl!

  • @BoxeoP4P In my computer it is detected, I go to device manager and its there but its "unllocated" and I'm unable to format it. I went into BIOS and it was there though I hear America Megatrends BIOS had an issue but I'm not that literate to know. Quick question, I have an EVGA P55 Micro MOBO, thats where I would get the latest driver right? not from America MEgatrends website, its all so confusing...

  • @CoolGod If your motherboard is EVGA, that is correct you go to the EVGA website and download ALL of the appropriate drivers for your current operating system (example windows 7 64bit). But there are also firmware for ssds. Go to the ssd manufacturer website and get the latest most up to date firmware for that EXACT ssd model. Dumb question for you have a sata cable and sata power connected to your ssd right? Google and maybe even giving the ssd manufacturer a quick email w/ ur problem

  • Thanks I installed a kingston ssd today on my desktop. Unfortunately my mobo doesn't support ahci so i had use ide mode. Still worth it though my wep went up from 5.9 off the sata drive to 7.0 with the ssd drive. I'm buying a new mobo soon so I'll make sure it supports ahci.

  • @1919k grats on the new ssd! Is it ur first? if so how's it treating you versus ur previous drive??

  • @BoxeoP4PYes it is my first. It's a lot better faster (even in ide mode) and alot quieter. I'm very pleased with it when I can afford to I'll get a 128gb for my other desktop.

I've put my old sata tb in as a 2nd drive for media, so I'll just keep the ssd for windows and programs. All in all a good upgrade.

  • @1919k nice, im using my first ssd too, the vertex 2 60gb and im loving it. I'm also using it the same way as you, with windows and a few games, then a hard drive for everything else.

  • Hey, can u explain why u have to go to regedit and do some changes there?!?

    explain why plz

  • @DuyAnh1 Hello, this is optional, your ssd will be fine without this. You do this method only if you do not enable this during OS installation. Otherwise this is the other way of enabling it.

  • why do people ALWAYS have to ruin videos with FUCKING TERRIBLE MUSIC???

  • @thenixhex311 lol, sorry you feel that way =/...anyways this was a really old video when i just started doing the videos so i didnt know what I was doing lol.

  • utlkhkjl

  • this is way too "enthusiast" for me... I'll risk frying my motherboard or completely shitting on my fresh OS install... thanks for the vid anyway... I'll probably do this when my comp is old.

  • @tirich91 no problem, don't do anything you don't feel comfortable doing. It won't be a HUGE performance increase if you don't do this. Although, I don't think its that dangerous lol. The only thing that got me was when I enabled the AHCI mode, it defaulted my SSD as 2nd drive and my HDD as boot drive which caused my system not tooo boot. This just required to make my SSD the boot drive again. (Info for if you try this in the future, just in case that happens to you)
