hmmmmm....she's no Leontyne Price....Ms. Price does the ENTIRE chromatic slide toward the end of the aria in ONE BREATH in her latest take on the piece...back in 1991...at 64 years old...
I saw this production. She must've been having a bad day because although I'm not a major fan of hers, I wouldn't say she was this bad when i saw her.
This is not Debbie's best. Although I think this is more of a one-time bad performance because I've heard her sing since and she sounded a thousand times better.
To be fair, Ms. Voigt was ill the day that this recording was made, which is probably why her voice doesn't sound as fresh and focused as usual here. I heard her at other performances during the run and she was stunning.
She seems to have lost the gleam at the top, and the singing towards the end is rather laboured and doesn't quite convey the feeling of blissful abandon.
This is her act 2 opening aria about the 2nd honeymoon, right?? I saw this, but since it's rarely performed, I'm having trouble placing certain aspects of it. Where is the glorious high D?? Am I missing it?
A C#, actually, nd she simplifies the passage by approaching it from a B, and than omitting the A# in between.
I was at the Met perfomance, and she sounded just as thin and strained as she does here. I also attended the two concert performances years earlier, where she sang wonderfully, as you can tell from the recording. Too bad they didn't get her in her prime.
BTW, the Met production was HORRIBLE, and deservedly boo'ed.
Listen to Kizart please. Takesha Meshe Kizart that is. What the hell happened to Voigt? She sounds awful. She really needs to get her voice back together. It makes no sense to go from one of the greatest voices of all time to this.
I don't think she's struggling. Voigt's timbre is actually very controversial. It's a little edgy and slightly accid, though still large and rounded. I myself don't like her timbre a lot, but I recognize her talents. Here she seems quite at ease, especially compared to other singers I heard in this aria. And let's not forget this was the first complete "Zweite Brautnacht" at the Met, since Jeritza simply cut all the high notes when she sang it. ;-)
Well, it is a naturally great voice, but she sounded MUCH better 10 years ago. I don't think her techique is good at this point. That shrill, edgy sound is comparing from a poor vocal production, imo.
her voice has lost all of its warmth and beauty. it is not what it once was. listen to her sing "Dich Taure Halle" from the Met gala. THAT was hot singing. someone has told her that she needs to "brighten" her sound and it is crap. PLEASE Debbie, bring your old voice back!!!!!!!!!
She looks absolutely stunning, and you should see her characterized as Brunhilde. Awesome!

There is definitely a "wobble" predicting
the end of a career. Listen to STEINMEYER sing this work

My God, what has happened to Mme. Voigt's voice, especially the top! Has anyone heard Price sing this aria at 64 years old? Do so!

Yeah Leontyne was amazing at 64. But There's only one price...

Her current sound has little to do with weight and more to do with STUDY! That's all I'm going to say!

I agree with you. Her voice has a very shrill, unpleasant edge; especially the wiry vibrato.

I like to think of her voice as crystal-like. Clear and unadulterated but sharp around the edges.
