  • @mikerowphone Since people aren't equal, equality is not compatable with freedom.

  • @BelfastAtheist Evidence that America is sponsoring Al-Quada? Please, do share.

  • @AndrewDewittBaker

I improperly worded my comment, apologies for the confusion. I have never believed that America supports Al-Quada.

  • Well I was in Iraq and we need to knuckle down and kill the enemy. Too much American Bloodshed is showing our concearn to truely put an end to Terrorism. I can see what is going on, but how can my fallen comrades. It is all too complicated yet oh so simple. It is more up to the Iraqi people to carry on their dreams of freedom. All we Americans did is give them a boost. The children cheered us on from the roadsides, not because we were the bully, but because we wanted to free them.

  • Iraq > Democracy > Free it's ppl > Saddam Evil ??? What the Fuck is wrong with America ? That very America and CIA funded Saddam and given them tons of weapon to fight Iran. America corrupts a Nation first then invade them.

Another Example is my Country Afghanistan. Afghans were funded by America mainly tons of weapons were given to Afghans to fight Soviet Union, After the defeat of Soviet Union. Afghanistan was wounded, Disoreinted , ARMED heavily and forgotton until 9/11

  • @sweetafghanboy2 What the FUCK is wrong with America? What the FUCK is wrong with you? Sadam Evil??? Nooooo, what a horrible thing to say about him. Take that back America, that's mean.

Right your mum gets raped tape recorded by Iraqi police and played back to you and family while you are forced at gun point to applaud.

You are the same type of muslim as Sadam Hussein but because you're kurdish you have chemicals in your flesh slowly burn you alive and have 98 villages gassed.

  • Hitchens is a pseudo-intellectual hilarious for his self-rightous moral preening and irrational attempts to show how highly evolved his moral conscience really is. Democracy is simply unlimited majority rule. There are no inalienable rights that cannot be voted away in a democracy, and America was never intended to be a democracy.

  • you cant say hitchens is a former liberal, he certainly wouldn't say that of himself. he wouldn't call himselft a liberal or a conservative, anyone with any sense can see that everyone on earth does not fall into one or the other

  • I can describe it, and I have at length in other forums. All of the freedoms mentioned in my original post ARE legal freedoms in my home country of Canada.

I have come to the conclusion that you are a mean spirited, unjustifiably arrogant, pedant. You have no interest in listening to my argument, only in exchanging insults.

I have obliged you, and I will allow anyone viewing this to make their own judgements. Your ears are stopped up to reason. I will waste no more time on you.

  • Of course Islam isn't incompatible with democracy. Democracy just means that everyone votes for the government. They could easily vote for a fascist religious nut who promises to brutalize them, and that has happened.

  • Democracy, in its modern form, is not just voting.

Modern democracy includes critically important principles such as freedom of thought, speech, press, religion, movement, and association. It includes rights of property and life.

Now, that being said, I agree with you that political Islam is not compatible with modern democracy. It grants none of those things that I have listed above to anyone other than Sharia fearing Muslims.

  • You are adding your own preferences to a word which already had a definition.

That isn't just bad vocabulary, it's a common form of delusion and fallacy. "Democracy" has a definition, and you are making baseless assumptions that it supports all of your political views.

  • It's not just my personal preference. Although there are few universally accepted definitions of democracy, even wikipedia names two general key principles:

"The first principle is that all citizens, not invested with the power to govern, have equal access to power and the second that all citizens enjoy legitimized freedoms and liberties."

Sounds like you're the one trying to strip out part of the definition of democracy for your own ends, not me trying to add stuff.

    So cut the smarm...

  • The wikipedia article on democracy seems to go squarely at democracy meaning rule by voting citizens. Maybe you are confusing examples with definitions.

And "legitimized freedoms and liberties" is quite vague. Much more so than your definition.

Most "modern democracies" don't exhibit all of your values anyway. In the UK, the majority of the press is owned by the government. In most of Europe, free speech is gleefully smashed for the sake of silencing unpopular opinions and symbols.

  • It's all in your head. If you can't describe your country's system without changing the meaning of existing words, you have a weak mind for both politics and language. And probably general logic as well.

  • Hitchens is still a liberal. You can be against Moore and be a liberal. Politics isn´t a sport where you are cheering for a team. So please don´t call him a former liberal just because he supported the invasion of Iraq.

  • he has stated in many occasions that he is an issue reporter and refuses to be aligned with a party. Most recently he has stated that his views concerning the war would align him more closely with neoconservatives, but he constantly says to not lump him with a side. (This is from interviews and from reading a few of his books.)

  • I take umbrage with you calling him a liberal. He was a Marxist and a radical, and only appears to be a "neocon" when focusing on his concern for human rights. "Liberals" in the Mike Moore sense are cowardly nihilists. It is sad that radical thinkers like Hitchens, who do contribute salient critiques on US foreign policy, for example, must be grouped in with such buffoons and frauds.

  • Yea, my saying he is a liberal still was more of an answer to the claim that he is a "former" liberal, stated by the video-poster. Sometimes it seems in the more superficial american debate you can only be liberal or conservative, that´s what I reacted to. You have a point, and also I think the term liberal translates slightly different here in europe, so I´m sure you are right.

  • Hitchens was never a Liberal, he was a Socialist.

  • Hitchens for president!

  • Terrorism = the use of force for political ends .

Makes the USA; Israel; England; State Terrorists.

  • take your medication

  • why arent saddam and bin laden on your list?

  • thanks for posting. good video except for the lame rock-riff / ambient propagandistic soundtrack.
