@lollerization I hear ya :( Also for some reason there's no concerts in the Boston area where I and my friends are and New York is too far away for us
I will be going to See them on the 7th of December. I don't think there will be much point living after that. I will lift my skinny fists like antennas to heaven...
seein themin chicago on march 28th!! I CANT BELIEVE IT. seeing this band live is one of the things i want to do before i die and it's finally going to be accomplished.
HAHAHA check this out: "In 2010 the band reported they were reuniting for All Tomorrows Parties in the UK as well as further US dates in 2011. Mike Moya has reportedly re-joined the band for the reunion."
@noreturnabcd They've definitely got enough unreleased material to release another album (or even 2), but like you said, I doubt it's going to happen. This seems like it's going to be more of a farewell tour, but who knows...if it goes well they might feel like getting back into the recording studio. Fingers crossed...
Yeah, for the All Tomorrows Parties festival and for some European and American shows! If they play in Buffalo and tickets aren't overpriced, I'm going for sure (I live in the Greater Toronto Area).
I missed them a few years ago. They played 15 mins down the street. I found out about it 2 days later! :( I should have been paying attention....just like Thom Yorke warned me about....
Hung Over As the Queen in Maida Vale is just an early version of a few future tracks from Lift Your Skinny Fists..., and Tiny Silver Hammers is a more or less completed Motherfucker=Redeemer. Albanian is great, and so is Gamelan.
Google search "internet archive godspeed" and click on the top result.
There you'll find 38 FULL shows (audio only) that are quite amazing, especially from the late 90s. The sound quality isn't great on all of them, so start with the highest rated shows first. The shows have been taped by audience members and are fully LEGAL because the band has granted permission.
TIP: For files that are only offered in the shorten format, use a program called "Trader's Little Helper" to convert to FLAC/WAV.
Just to add to this, the show you can find there by searching for "sojus" is a soundboard recording. Not the best concert they've played, but the sound quality is pretty nice.
Otherwise, the show they played at Lund, Sweden in 2002 is probably the best gig up there.
Ah, I'm trying to remember when Yanqui U.X.O was released, I thought it was after the hiatus? And hopefully now that the Iraq war is coming to an end so will their breakup ;D
I wish I could see the drummer in any of these live vids. The thing that stands out so much to me in GY!BE is mainly the drumming. Although the violin and cello play a HUGE part in all of their songs, I just feel the drums are a big driving force in all of the songs as well, making the climaxes that much more... Climactical (I'm surprised that's an actual word.)
the drumming on 'antennas to heaven', coupled with that sliding guitar is the best thing I have ever heard. How does it manage to be so sad and lonely, but so uplifting and hopeful at the same time?
You guys, OMG why are you arguing about GYBE. This is the best band ever, have all there records and been to two concerts whith them and never really felt the same after. Love GYBE more than words can tell.
I mean basically i have a grudge against the members because how i see it they basically said, our fans arent smart enough to understand our political views so lets break up
Even though i believe meaning is in reception not intention, if they don't wish to make more music because they think people don't get it then they have every right.
obviously they have every right, but that does not mean that that is a legitamite reason, they prolly fought over a chick or some shit and wanted to make up another excuse haha
ah ok lol. missed that point. but i dunno. they have sorta been launched into the mainstream (not that i think thats a bad thing) but i can see why they would think their music is being misunderstood.
mighta been preemptive then 0.o .. watch the movie pineapple express. they take a low blow at gybe lol, saying that (paraphrased) when you go to collage you're just gonna be another know it all idiot who thinks he's smart because he listens to gybe. imo gybe saw the masses of idiots jumping on their band wagon so they broke up because they didn't want the band turning into a joke.
perhaps, maybe there really are people who interpret interviews from bailey finnegan as oppinions the band actually has....... but otherwise how can can you really properly find the meaning to motonous tones and intrumentals besides trying to figure out what the title of the song actually means.......your asking alot out of people at that point.. if they werent an instrumental band it would be a good excuse, but even when your not that kind of band, its hard to even get your fans 2 understand it
I'm not asking anything from anyone. I'm just saying i can totally understand the reason the band broke up, i think that reason makes a lot of sense.
and personally - when it comes to their music, i think its very straightforward. the conversations in their music deliver a clear message and the music itself is nothing more than emotion
but again it means different things to different people. however cant you see that the band has become an icon, and i think thats what they mean. they became an icon and lots of people are attracted to their music not because they actually like it, but because its the 'cool' thing to like and they did not want that happening.
ah well that is a good point. but i guess we just look at it differently. like a calculus teacher expects his students to know at least basic algebra, and if they don't then there is no point trying to teach them. if you get what I'm saying.
on second thought, what is there to get? statements like that are just pretentious. music is art which people interpret in different ways. you idiots try so hard to be deep that you reflect the opposite.
its not about what 'you get' from the music. it means something different to everyone. but what we were arguing is why they broke up, and i was saying that they broke up because, by what i understand, they felt they became more of an icon. like it got to a point where if they made anything people would like it automatically because its by 'godspeed you! black emperor'. and in that sense i think people 'don't get it'. i wasn't trying to be 'deep', just saying i can see why they broke up.
I know this may not be the place for this, but if you guys want a band that makes you feel like you're the only person on earth, check out a band called Sanchez Is Driven By Demons, especially the song called Panda.
Again, I apologize for posting that, but I really put them almost as high as GYBE... almost.
It's funny that you apologize for that. I was thinking the same thing. Sanchez is incredible. I wouldn't say there up with Godspeed, but ya know... There real nice.
these violin and cello players derserve so much more credit than they get.. i consider most of godspeeds music to be violin and cello with a little bit of guitar, bass, and drums in the intense bits
Now where did you read that, cos I'm not sure it's true. Listening to the individual side projects you can certainly tell which parts came from who, especially in the cases of Efrim in ASMZ and Mike Moya in Set Fire To Flames.
these guys are just absolutely amazing, like, you can't get better, it's just purely amazing. F#A# oo is like the best album ever. definitely the song i want to montage my life to. and to listen to on my last day alive.
Some people will dismiss ASMZ as "Godspeed with poetry." But those people should really listen to 13 blues for 13 moons. Then they will defiantly rescind their comments.
I'm sorry, i can't stand Mt. Zion.. it's like that efrim guy just takes all the attention off the beautiful music! now godspeed was where it was at... WHY DID THEY QUIT?!
there are a few interviews on that question. they just lost that something they had at the beginning. writing new music became difficult (with so many people on the project). they just felt they can't do it anymore...
most exciting news i've heard in a while. i saw mt. zion a few months ago here in Spain and they were incredible. But they're never going to be godspeed.
I saw these guys at the Scale in London (2000) and it made two friends pass out. The only time I've ever understood the whole 'hairs on the back of your neck' thing. Unbelievable. Saw them at Colchester two years later, still as good - life-altering...
Sadly even if you kill they wouldn't be playing as GYBE.
Damn depressing.
I started liking the band right before their broke-up. The only benefit is probably not having to acquire any new albums, same thing happens when you love Joy Division.
But when the three albums and "Slow Riot" EP are as good as they are, it's depressing because it's just such damned good music. Infuriated I never saw them, and unfortunately it seems never will...even more infuriating is I was out of the country (England) when A Silver Mount Zion did a one stop gig in London...doubly harsh...
Though many of you may disgree, this has to be their best song. It has all of the elements they usually use and when I first heard it, I just was astonished beyond what I can express.
do you know what happened that day? or maybe the reason of why they called the song with those numbers (i think it's a date) ... maybe it's not quite important but it intrigues me...
About 09-15-00: in the album artwork you can read this explanation: "09-15-00 is Ariel Sharon surrounded by 1000 Israeli soldiers marching on Al-Haram Ash-Sharif & provoking another intifada".
About 12-28-99: I read somewhere it's the date that Wanda died (Wanda was Efrim's dog)...
He was very attached to that dog and the decision to record the first Silver Mt. Zion album was partly caused by this fact.
thanks a lot ... i need to get that album (Yanqui UXO) ... that explains as well, the reason of why they titled that Silver Mt Zion's song "For Wanda"
to "DrJme" and to all gy!be's fans: I have just posted a live video of gybe playing moya! it's taken from the same show, and it's a segment which "hcrndnz" didn't upload (just because he didn't have it :p). unfortunately it's incomplete but the first half is really awesome!
enjoy it! :)
P.S. In the video info I wrote a summary about godspeed's video we have, I think you and someone also may be interested in it ;)
about 09-15-00 (the name of the "song" which they are playing in this video) i must tell you that in the video of this show which you'll find on eMule (read those info i wrote in my video page ;) there are a pair of minutes more than the version posted here but it's still incomplete. :(
st andrews hall detroit 3/27/03 was the last time i ever saw GYBE live. best show ever. the movies in the background were always the best and its still hard to describe to the people that never got a chance to go, what it looked like looking up at all those flames and smokes stacks during world police. sooo goood.
there are lots of programs that you can find from internet to download youtube and lots of other vids..i use "vdownloader" for ex. and kept these "alive" this way..:)
Actually I was listening to the london 1967 version of intestellar overdrive the other day & thought wow this IS post rock! only what 30 years too early.

Though many of you may disgree, this has to be their best song. It has all of the elements they usually use and when I first heard it, I just was astonished beyond what I can express.

just a little correction: the definitive name of the song is "09-15-00", but before releasing YANQUI U.X.O. the song was called "12-28-99"!
So, more properly, the name of this song is "12-28-99"! ^^

do you know what happened that day? or maybe the reason of why they called the song with those numbers (i think it's a date) ... maybe it's not quite important but it intrigues me...
mussgo182 3 years ago
About 09-15-00: in the album artwork you can read this explanation: "09-15-00 is Ariel Sharon surrounded by 1000 Israeli soldiers marching on Al-Haram Ash-Sharif & provoking another intifada".
About 12-28-99: I read somewhere it's the date that Wanda died (Wanda was Efrim's dog)...
He was very attached to that dog and the decision to record the first Silver Mt. Zion album was partly caused by this fact.

thanks a lot ... i need to get that album (Yanqui UXO) ... that explains as well, the reason of why they titled that Silver Mt Zion's song "For Wanda"
mussgo182 3 years ago
Not at all!
btw the whole album is dedicated to Wanda ;)

i really had no idea about it .. thanks a lot

DrJme 3 years ago
to "DrJme" and to all gy!be's fans: I have just posted a live video of gybe playing moya! it's taken from the same show, and it's a segment which "hcrndnz" didn't upload (just because he didn't have it :p). unfortunately it's incomplete but the first half is really awesome!
enjoy it! :)

hope someone has the complete version!!

st andrews hall detroit 3/27/03 was the last time i ever saw GYBE live. best show ever. the movies in the background were always the best and its still hard to describe to the people that never got a chance to go, what it looked like looking up at all those flames and smokes stacks during world police. sooo goood.

GYBE is what Syd Barrett heard in his head back in his Floyd days.

Ha, i saw a video of Floyd performing that (on some documentary) and had the exact same reaction.
Brilliant song, by the way.

c'mon dude i'm tired of hearing this. with the majority of 20 somethings listening to manufactered mall punk and these guys rediscovering what made king crimson (who were really the monkeys of jethro tull) great, you're gonna hate? what'd you win a pulitzer recently? have you put yourself out there in public and show something new and wonderous you've been sitting on? yes, gsybe! are not entirely a new branch of rock music, no act is. they're roger waters without the inflated ego. so what?!
