So dramatic, so emotionally connected. LOVE it! Blows EVERY other version out of the water. Am not surprised she was picked to do the tribute for Mercer!
I love how Salonga took her time singing each line of the song with passion and performed it in a style so different from her usual recordings, yet made it her own.
The best version I've heard - emotionally and vocally. Nancy and the other singers who've done this song are so overrated. The producers were right to get Salonga to do the tribute for Mercer.
@annief31 My introduction to this song was via Barry Manilow's rendition, which I still love. Like you, I don't find either Clooney's or Wilson's impressive. They sang the song well, but their voices just don't have the clean, velvety quality present in Salonga's singing voice.
Some members of the audience were unfamiliar with the song, apparently; they began to applaud before she was quite finished. Well, that's live performing: the unexpected often occurs. Still it was enjoyable, her voice is lovely and powerful. Thank you for sharing.
Why do people go over-the-top gesticulating on stage? In a play, that's understandable. The person in the back row has to see it. However, when you have a video screen that's roughly two stories tall showing your face, it's not necessary.
The vocalization at the beginning and end is really over-the-top.
This is an amazing song... it's about a man who is getting on in years and thinking back.
I also like how they blended "The Autumn Leaves" into Manilow's melody. Nice.
Every time I hear Lea's version of this song, it brings tears to my eyes. An opinion is an opinion and my opinion is that she does an amazing job with this song. This video's quality does not do her justice.
Salonga overvocalizes here, wanting us to pay attention to her voice instead of the lyrics. In the same way a teenager cant put over "Blame It On My Youth", this song needs the soul, depth and experience of someone older - who's been there and knows exactly what she's missing when October goes. Salonga loses the metaphor. Listen to Rosemary Clooney's moving version. Great singers reach us by the simplicity with which they bring lyrics to life - not by their vocal calisthenics.
While I agree that Lea may not yet have the vast amount of years needed to fully realize this song, what she does is pretty amazing. Yes Clooney's rendition is VERY GOOD because of where she was in her life. But I at least give Lea FULL RESPECT for singing this great Barry Manilow song and adding a layer of emotion I had not heard before. This performance is actually one of my favorites that I listen too alot on my MP3 player. That's why I shared this video, to get other people's take on it...
Well said! This song is just so amazing, lyrics by Barry Manilow, music by Jonhny Mercer. I'm just grateful to hear anyone singing it, for us all to enjoy! Thanks for posting!
Absolutely! Also, listen to Nancy Wilson's version. I heard this song on the radio one night shortly after losing a love far too young, on october 23, 2003. this song, like many other songs that are true, deserves more than pretty. i don't buy a word she's singing. it's personal, and ridiculous of me, but i found this performance insulting.
Stop preaching fallensunshine. You're feeding off the volley as much as those you accuse. You're nothing but a common instigator. You don't set the "YouTube" standard last I checked.
Oh yeah, and I think I'll stop responding now. It's probably what you want (unless my theory is correct), and it's defiantly what I want. Because I see nothing changing but the level of negativity here.
noisycanary : And you, this wouldn't have happened either without a 2nd party. Maybe you ought to learn manners alongside with Cadellacorte and allow for differing opinions, no matter how strongly you might react. A closed mind and cursing is never acceptable.
Cadellacorte: This little spat might not have happened if you weren't so rude and pretentious. You're entitled to you're own opinion but if all you do is insult rather than being polite and constructive, then you're bound to meet opposition. Courtesy is especially appreciated in an area where you're bound to be a minority. And there's going to be no argument on how "bad" Lea is that would allow you to be so rude.
fallensunshine et al? Rude and pretentious is not my style. I have conviction. If I don't slobber all over your fav. songbird you guys go nuts. Canary actually swore at me. And mike2smart I've listened to other pieces she's done. It's just that I don't think she's got that extra something. This is opinion after all.
Apparently objective self assessment isn't either. I don't know what you consider rude, but your comment was as over the line as canary's, whether or not you cursed.
You can voice your opinion, and I always try to respect others. But what you wrote was insulting, degrading, and pompous. And conviction? Conviction for what? Insulting and belittling others? Perhaps.
Perhaps you ought to take a stab at "humility" and "courtesy" because I can see some people hold the same opinion as me.
You like one diva I like the other. What's the beef you jerk. There.. since you seem to crave insult and you accused me of doing same? There's a little for your mediocre-taste arse.
But my god, does it stir some sad nostalgia that is older than I. There is something heart wrenching about Lea's rendition that makes me incredibly pained.
i bought her Inspired CD where October Goes is also included in the tracks. But I like her live version here more than the CD.Well, the CD has superior arrangement and orchestration/background but Lea's voice and interpretation is much better here in this concert
yeah, i agree with you. that's the first thing i noticed the first time i listened to Inspired. this one in the video is her best interpretation of the song..
I love this song. This woman ruins it. Her phraseology is dreadful and her range is limited. She hams it up too much. Nancy Wilson and Barry Manilow are the only two I've ever heard effectively carry off this amazing song. Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics and Manilow the song. GET HER OFF THE STAGE! Ugh.
uhm, she owns the stage! she's one of the most respected Tony and Olivier Award winners... and you obviously don't know that. And her interpretation of this song is one of the most applauded songs in her concerts, both by her fans and the critics... but you don't know that, as well... fuckin old-school purist!
noisycanary? Would you prefer I just mimicked your taste? I think the woman has mediocre talent at best and stop swearing at me. Is your vocab. that limited? She makes a wistful song into a melodramtic one. I don't think she's very talented. I don't a shite about her "fans". I listen with MY ears.
well your ears obviously have something in them... ever heard of cotton buds?! well if you think an Olivier and Tony Awardee is mediocre then I rest my case, I'm not the one who has the problem. tsk tsk!
your username is appropriate; you're 'noisy'. I'm not concerned with awards I listen with my ears. The woman is listenable at best IN MY OPINION. Streisand at her finest Salonga "ain't". If you want to hear this song well sung listen to Nancy Wilson's rendition. Now play nice. Are you this dictatorial in life generally? Yeowtch!
cadellacorte, with all due respect, Salonga was selected to interpret the song and her rendition was even recorded for the album Tribute to Johnny Mercer CD.Music critics said her version is dazzling that revives the exquisite singing style of the 50s. How old r u Cadellacorte?
marcus? This is an odd phenomenon when others try to orchestrate another's taste. You can go on and on about her acolades until the cows come home. To me that's irrelevant. Emenimen the rapper has been lauded too -- UNDESERVEDLY in my opinion. I'm old enough marcus to have watched Streisand's career from the get-go. I know real talent.
wow. this is the first time i've heard this song. and it's beautiful. i love lea! she could sing any song and turn it into a more wonderful song than it already is. thank you for posting! ;)
this is a rare find. a true classic. she really illustrates what a world class standard truly is. Makes me laugh with other filipino artitsts claiming they're world class even if they're just nothing but trying hards. They shud see this!
Thanks for sharing. I really like Lea's version as the song is sung with much emotion -- plus the changes she's made (higher notes in some parts) have made the song more interesting.
This is an original Barry Manilow music and Lea absolutely did justice in singing this classical song. She sang it by heart, with total emotion and passion.Great job. Thanks for posting Disney69.Keep up the goodwork:-)
