When coming to Finland talk about water bird hunting in the spring time, which is prohibited everywhere in Europe except here. It's against common sense and EU directives. This shouldn't be allowed in a country which markets itself as a land of natural beauty and wilderness.

I thought about what your friends are doing in working for less. That's kind of smart if they are trying to get experience and beef up their CV. Finland has a few autos but most people travel on foot, use horses or oxen pulling carts. It's all terribly backwards but a few homes have been known to have electricity and even indoor plumbing. We are still eating foreigners during the winters. It's all dramatically sad but true. ;-P

To visit, study, or work for a foreign company for a few years is great! But when it comes to looking for a job, know Finns choose their home grown people first. They are very loyal to their own when the job market is tight. Agree or disagree, the new kids on the playground are still chosen last.

Hehe, sure I was there in December! And Yes for me it's the most beautiful city on earth! It's only my own opinion! ;) I'm sure everyone has another city he likes the most! ;) I really like the atmosphere and the people there. You should go to Helsinki in the X-Mas Time it's really really beautiful with all these lights in the streets and most of the famous buildings are illuminated with a special light concept! I like this very much! :) And then combind with all these snow! Fantastic!!!

been there in September-the whole centre is integrated as one zone around railway station, I enjoyed walking in the city parks as well as main shopping roads-for sure it´s been first time I visited ice bar, as then Sokos Torni Hotel´s bird´s view is breathtaking, have a beer there, sea world, and Finnish National Museum , for taking a ride there is a special "T" tram going round, walking alond the sea at the last metro station was beautiful - enjoy your stay there

I can't say I've watched the most of finnish movies, I only saw Pahaa Maa, Jade Soturi and The mand without a past (yes, from Kaurismaki) and they all have that characteristic lack of feelings or demonstration in their characters, but that could be only a resource for the film, not reality itself. Anyway, there's a documentary that sepaks about that feature of finnish people on Utube, I'll look for it.

Probably the best-known Finnish directors abroad are the brothers Kaurismäki (Aki and Mika), and they have this style of very minimalist acting and very sparse dialogue. It's very different from mainstream Hollywood films and such.

Not all Finnish films are like that. There are other directors who have made 'mainstream entertainment' style films with more normal-sounding dialogue, including chitchat etc.

That's just the style of the films you have seen ;P I can't imagine how could there be anywhere a place where everyone would be like that :) Many (maybe even most) of the films that have gotten publicity outside of Finland are like that (dunno). It's just the style of those films. Oh, and btw Finland isn't part of Scandinavia. Finland is part of Nordic countries not Scandinavia. Look up from the english wikipedia for more details =)

yeah, Helsinki is very Squre-ish. And since Finland was part of the russian empire there are a lot of russian-styled architecture. Moreover, Helsinki and St. Petersburg are virtually undistinguishable. Architecture-wise, of course

true, the area of senates square is very similar to the architecture one can find in st Petersburg, but that's about it. Many old buildings in Helsinki represent Jugend syle, which have been designed by the same architects whose buildings are in Stockholm
