It's ironic that this was released in 1984, the same year that the famous novel about the totalitarian government that rose to power in the wake of a Nuclear War...
@mikeS8590 The gist of what she's saying is that radiation monitors around the world are picking up evidence of the radiation from the 1st Soviet missile, a 'nuclear tipped' air defence weapon and the ground burst weapon used to nuke the Iranian city of Mashad. A Swedish sesmology station has picked up the shockwave from the latter. French reporters in Baghdad have seen a bright light in the eastern sky from the former. Also western Pakistan is being evacuated due to drifting fallout from Iran
@dingocrap I didn't have bottled milk in school, just that carton crap, where half of the milk is chunky and spoiled and sometimes when you try and open it, all it does is fold the top over and you have to manually make the incision in the top to drink from it.
@SloreTactician Agreed. We're idiots. Religious, Athiest, Capitalist, Communist. Morons really. Can't agree on the color of muck. Variety means conflict, conformity means oppression.
@SloreTactician says the brit....are you fucking kidding me....it seems to me like the problem is these greedy power hungry scum bags that rule the planet....yeah its the little guys fault
If enough people get together and scream and yell, It will stop all missiles being launched. Along with stopping all warheads raining down on your town. What the world needs is more protesters.
The scene at 08.30 in the bunker is a real civil defence bunker in Gravesend, Kent. In woodlands park. They do a tour of it, the guide told me about threads, hence why i'm watching it. I saw the day after at school, but missed this. This is almost 30 years ago, but nothings changed. Only the speed of arrival of the missiles.
It basically means to do a disappearing act when no one is looking. To runaway. Someone usually does one when they are running from something, usually when they can't deal with their life.
@eragon2121 listen NOOB there is no such thing as a British accent.this is north west England, drive half a hour away and it changes completely...When will you get it???
@MICKEYISLOWD No shit you fucking dumb fuck, of course there are different types of british accents. But most of them sound fairly similar. And it's spoken by people in Britain. Therefore it's a british accent. It's kind of sad I have to respond to your overly hostile, immature post for a friendly comment about a foreign accent.
@eragon2121 Eh? What on earth are you talking about? I am from Scotland and can tell you that there is NO such thing as a 'British accent' and to say that all the many varied accents in the so-called united kingdom "sound fairly similar" is utter nonsense. Why do so many people on youtube just say the first thing to come into their heads or say whatever 'sounds correct' to them rather than learn facts before hand?
@catblanket14uk i wouldn't know i was born after the glass bottles where phased out.
pity the glass bottles did stop the taste of plastic leaching into fresh milk plus milk was fresher when delivered daily instead of being stored in fridges in supermarkets for up to 2 weeks.
this can still happen today, just wait till our fuel resources run out and if we have not found an alternative to meet demands to the millions of people around the world, countries will fight over what little is left which could escalate to a nuclear war.
Shit,14 years old,Argentinian. After watching this movie nothing else will be the same....It has changed my thoughts about nuclear energy employment by the mankind.
Anyway, great movie, love these kind of movie showing "What if's".But I do reckon it lacked to show what happened to the british authorities, specially the British Army and Navy.Who knows what guys with guns will do in this situation.....
PD:THEY MUST MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT THE MOOLIGHT FLINT FAMILY TO SHOW WHAT HAPPENED TO 'EM!
@patria0tehuelche Why ought this change anything you think about nuclear energy? Nuclear energy and nuclear weapons have as much in common as chemical energy and chemical weapons.
David Cameron's Defense policy, a seat for himself, his family and other Conservative and Lib Dem big wigs and their families on a requisitioned British Airways Boeing 777 departing London Heathrow destination Bermuda, before the first Iranian ten kiloton yield range nuke detonates over London. Put the Nimrod MRA4 in to service, keep the Harrier GR9 in service and kick Cameron out of 10 Downing Street.
I got watching this tonight after hearing one of the London student rioters say: "It's the Thatcher era again. It's a recession and here are the riots".
I know we're not in for a nuclear war, but it makes me feel sick to the stomach that he's probably correct. I was made redundant from a previously good career. Now I take work when I can get it. History repeats itself so cruelly and always favours a sector of society who don't know what the word 'struggle' actually means!
The movie correctly points out that in an emergency, the authorities are not on your side. Your freedom of speech and freedom of movement will be gone. You will be a problem to be managed, not a person to be helped. Hurrican Katrina is one example of this.
"We're going to Lincolshire, we'll be safer over there". LOL!!!! A county with loads of RAF bases was hardly the safest of places given they would be first hit, he may as well have picked the middle of Suffolk!!!
their neighbour's Morris Marina Estate has been likely destroyed by rust and trunnion failure before the nuke attack. no good idea try to escape with such a car.
The one thing this film did that no other nuclear war film has done was to peer into the future. It didn't just stop at the immediate effects of a global nuclear war. It showed how horrid life on the planet would would be 20 years down the pike.

wait until these damn republicans get back in power. There will be another war for sure. Their finger are inching for a war with Iran. The bloody bastards are a bunch of warmongers. Also, I don't know why they keep expanding NATO other than to provoke the Russians. Wasn't the all point of NATO to fight against a Soviet Invasion? I am telling you Nato was meant to keep the EU under U.S submission, it makes sure they don't do their own thing without us. Europeans are so dumb they can't see that
@madrid23 I agree with you. The Cold War NEVER ENDED. The Cold War is still active. The NEW stage of the Cold WAR is to keep Russia away of Europen affairs, it's an asoliation politic to avoid Russia to establish a balance in Europe. If you can see the balance is so charge to Americans and British to influence in Europe.
The Americans think that Europe owes them a lot after they rebuilt Europe after WWII and therefore they feel they have the right to be there and dictate politics.
@mongoose704 The USA -is- growing more and more isolationist. While the sentiment has not reached the more populated centers of our country, the vast majority of rural and small civic communities are talking more and more about it behind closed doors. It is only a matter of time that it will spread and take hold. When this happens, countries and regions that have been held in check by international response will smolder and ignite with the NATO and UN forces neutered by US withdrawal. shitstorm
@Odysseus154 - That is possible, unfortunately, but I don't think it will last. It may get bad though. The U.S. was isolationist before both World Wars, though folks like Wilson and Roosevelt knew we'd have to get involved eventually. It is sad. The world is too big now, the U.S can't go at it alone anymore.
IF the US starts shit with nuclear nations I would say the best possible strategy would be to sever all diplomatic ties and drop out of NATO. America's wars are its own responsibility.
I am American. I and a growing number of people here believe America should mind its own business and stay out of the affairs of other nations. I believe the US should not only pull out of NATO but the UN as well. Our push for a global empire has made us and everyone else less safe. Furthermore I am tired of losing half my income to my government to pay for the defense of continents and countries that won't defend themselves. It's bankrupting me and our country and killing countless, dammit
@mongoose704 There's something in you guys being less busybody and "empire building", but your notions of the actual sums being spent on "foreign aid" and the military is very much off-target. The proportion of your tax income being spent on the military is considerably less than what you think. Also, not since the Cold War has the US been "defending" countries that "won't defend themselves", and even then it wasn't quite so simple. I understand your frustration, but your facts are wrong.
@lefredvoncarstein yes we are spending nearly a trillion a year on this empire especially when you consider costs that are NOT part of the military budget but assist the expansion of military production and our occupation of other nations. The estimation of Iraq alone could be costing us nearly a trillion every four years. Costs such as future verterans benefits are not included with government figures on the cost of war.
@mongoose704 and yes we are defending countries that won't defend themselves. They can get their own damn army. NATO alone is specifically for the defense of Europe of which America provides roughly 75% of the support for.
Occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, 700 bases in 130 countries. My facts are right. You need to be more critical of the sanitized "official facts."
I really felt bad for Ruth at the end of this section. Her fiance continued on, thinking of the future, and poor Ruth was a realist: that she would either die soon, or live in a hell on earth.
Protect and survive was designed to be broadcast in the 72 hours preceding when the government expected a first strike. So happily, it was never really shown.
America is awesome. Movies like Jaws and Terminator and Jurrassic Park (1st one was good) were made in america. america will win every war just for that. infact america will make a time machine and go win in vietnam and korea.
Don't wanna sound like a retarded north american but I cannot for the life of me decipher what that fellow at the very beginning is saying and I've watched that bit quite a few times now. Could anybody help?
@joyandian For me, as an American, just about everything the neighbor packing the car says is very hard to understand, especially from 0:35. Perhaps he is the "fellow at the beginning" meninjoe is asking about.
@SubmarinerAndroid Don't worry mate. I'm English and a cockney. This is set in the north of England where there are many different accents. The sheffield one (seen here) can sometimes be hard to understand for a feoreigner - mind you, you probably wouldn't know what I was on about either!!!
He basically says that he's going out to the country to stay with relatives. He says that he doesn't think they'll bomb out there. He also asks his wife if she turned the gas off.
I bet they'd be peeved off if when they got to the country, where they thought they'd be safe, that it in fact it was near a military airfield, which would have been one of those prime targets for a Soviet nuclear strike.
@menijoe He says, "Doing a moonlight flit then?" which usually means running away at night to avoid paying money you owe. He's joking they're running away from the bailiffs xD Welcome to the world of British slang :D
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Fuck the Americans and former Nazis who helped develop nuclear weapons and fuck the guy who gave information to the Soviets, who in turn helped the Chinese, then the U.S. helping Britain. They will kill us all in the next 50 years.
I can't say I approve of anyone saying to f--- my country, but for your specific gripe, I am willing to take a bite of the shit sandwich. I truly wish these stupid things were never invented by anybody. Unfortunately they were, so now we have to deal with it.
You seem to forget the good that came out of those Americans and former Nazis developing nuclear capabilities, wankerman. Yes, we have enough nuclear warheads to blow ourselves up 20 times over, but we also have a clean form of energy, cancer treatments and more efficient medical procedures, a way of preserving fresh meat and produce so that it can be shipped to people who need it. Weapons seem to be a small ratio of bad compared to the good that has come out of nuclear advancement.
It wasnt meant to broadcast for fun, it was only to be broadcast as part of the "War Book" transition to war measures, as in the play. I still have my copy of P&S. It cost a £1.
The Protect and Survive series? Yes, someone has a whole channel dedicated to it here on youtube.
Don't forget the plastic polymer wrap for disposal of your loved ones, 2degucatis.
Scariest, yet most useless, fucking PSA's ever. Even worse than the US one of the fellow shooting up with the oversized hypodermic to the tattoo of an Alice Cooper song.
Now the Alice Cooper thing.....I don't remember that. Must look it up. PSA's can go either way,....cheesy and therefore very memorable, or totally horrifiying and therefore un-broadcastable.
Thanks, that's kinda old though, at this point I should replace nazi with bully. My experience when I first started using youtube was that the majority of bullies were nazi though.
@discothief I've heard this alot, but I still seem to remember them though, and I've asked a few other people who also remember them, mainly because of that music!

mongoose704 1 year ago
@mongoose704 and yes we are defending countries that won't defend themselves. They can get their own damn army. NATO alone is specifically for the defense of Europe of which America provides roughly 75% of the support for.
Occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, 700 bases in 130 countries. My facts are right. You need to be more critical of the sanitized "official facts."

I really felt bad for Ruth at the end of this section. Her fiance continued on, thinking of the future, and poor Ruth was a realist: that she would either die soon, or live in a hell on earth.
mbabist01 2 years ago 2
See how the wallpaper that's left on the wall above Ruth's head at 10:10 looks like a mushroom cloud? Bizzare.

Yeah it was the atomic mushroom cloud wallpaper, it was all the rage back then if I remember.

Protect and Survive was not shown because most British people would have seen it for what it was; useless government BS, and laughed at it.
Relugus 2 years ago
Protect and survive was designed to be broadcast in the 72 hours preceding when the government expected a first strike. So happily, it was never really shown.

America is awesome. Movies like Jaws and Terminator and Jurrassic Park (1st one was good) were made in america. america will win every war just for that. infact america will make a time machine and go win in vietnam and korea.

You got it right, "Midnight flit" referring to leaving in the dead of night.
Qorlan 1 year ago
@joyandian For me, as an American, just about everything the neighbor packing the car says is very hard to understand, especially from 0:35. Perhaps he is the "fellow at the beginning" meninjoe is asking about.

@SubmarinerAndroid Don't worry mate. I'm English and a cockney. This is set in the north of England where there are many different accents. The sheffield one (seen here) can sometimes be hard to understand for a feoreigner - mind you, you probably wouldn't know what I was on about either!!!

@joyandian yeah could u help me understand what he ment by "doing a moonlight flit then?"
residentevil568 1 year ago
@joyandian
moonlight flit is like leaving a rental house or apartment in the middle of the night with unpaid bills on table. Take off b4 eviction.

He basically says that he's going out to the country to stay with relatives. He says that he doesn't think they'll bomb out there. He also asks his wife if she turned the gas off.
wvd1979 2 years ago
I bet they'd be peeved off if when they got to the country, where they thought they'd be safe, that it in fact it was near a military airfield, which would have been one of those prime targets for a Soviet nuclear strike.

@menijoe "Doing a moonlight flit then?
No, we're going over to our Jack's in Lincolnshire, while things get sorted out, I recon we'll be safer over there...."

First guy:"Doing a moonlight flit, then?" (Phrase referring someone runs away in the middle of the night to avoid having to pay a debt.)
Second guy: No, we're heading over to (can't make it out) until things get sorted out. I reckon it'll be safer over there."

@menijoe Yes, you got it correct!

@menijoe doing a moonlight flit? eloping. going off in the dark. running away in the moonlight. Doing a runner when no-one is looking.

Unfortunately they were, so now we have to deal with it.
wardenphil 2 years ago
You seem to forget the good that came out of those Americans and former Nazis developing nuclear capabilities, wankerman. Yes, we have enough nuclear warheads to blow ourselves up 20 times over, but we also have a clean form of energy, cancer treatments and more efficient medical procedures, a way of preserving fresh meat and produce so that it can be shipped to people who need it. Weapons seem to be a small ratio of bad compared to the good that has come out of nuclear advancement.
lesterclaypool1 2 years ago
It wasnt meant to broadcast for fun, it was only to be broadcast as part of the "War Book" transition to war measures, as in the play. I still have my copy of P&S. It cost a £1.
5000433 2 years ago 3
Not intentionally but the reality made it look so absurd the 'War Book' and the broadcast, and this BBC drama just emphasised that even more.

The protect and survive series was never broadcast due to the fact that the entire population of Britain would have shit themselves instantly. FACT.

The Protect and Survive series? Yes, someone has a whole channel dedicated to it here on youtube.
Don't forget the plastic polymer wrap for disposal of your loved ones, 2degucatis.
Scariest, yet most useless, fucking PSA's ever. Even worse than the US one of the fellow shooting up with the oversized hypodermic to the tattoo of an Alice Cooper song.
lesterclaypool1 2 years ago
Now the Alice Cooper thing.....I don't remember that. Must look it up. PSA's can go either way,....cheesy and therefore very memorable, or totally horrifiying and therefore un-broadcastable.
