  • i only looked this up because nickelback mentiones it a few times in some songs

  • Excellent video, nothing beats a hard working set of locos, steep grades and great sound

  • @cagorrie Thank you! Yes you are right-I used to to wait for the coal trains leaving Lithgow and race up to this point, the steepest grade, and video them climbing. After a while it becomes monotonous and you can only take so many many videos of the same thing!

  • Do you know, how many tons a fully loaded coal train weights? The diesel are working really hard.

  • @isomolle This particular train weighed, from memory, 3800 tonnes, which is the average weight to Port Kembla from the Lithgow area. The trip generally takes between six and eight hours via the outskirts of Sydney.

  • @charade97

Line from Sydenham to say Sutherland is not quite on the outskirts of Sydney. At present, it handles some 6 suburban and one intercity service in off peak as well as goods traffic.

Anyway video is great and thanks for extra information on locos. Pacific seem to have split up the C class, mixing them with 82s and the odd G class

  • Great 5* Nifty idea that, shifting from diesel to steam. Like it. You're either a tripod man or you have a more steady hand than I. Good stuff.

  • @MrCalmesh Oh thank you. Just noticed your comment. Haven't been uploading anything for a while. Just bought a new camera.

  • WOW!!

The music that EMD prime movers make as well as a Leslie S5T. Throw in the steam on top of that, it doesn't get any better. :-)

  • Sorry, we in Aussie are a bit dumb to some of your railroad terms.

What does EMD and Leslie S5T mean ? Thanks .

  • @ERNIEMAC2

Sorry I didn't clarify that earlier on.

EMD = former Electro-Motive Division of General Motors. Now it is Electro-Motive Diesel, and it is now a seperate company from General Motors.

As for the Leslie, it is the S5T produced by Leslie Controls Incorporated out of Tampa, Florida.

  • Thanks a lot.

Everything gets a symbol or an abbreviation, so can be somewhat confusing.

  • @ERNIEMAC2 Furthermore - EMD if you dont already know are the manufacturer of the 2 stroke diesel engines used in these locomotives, the S5T is the Supertyfon series horn mounted on the nose of the locomotive.

  • Very cool display of shear power! 5 * & Fav

You a far better cameraman than me . Have you any shots of 82 class doing same grade ? I think these only come from Clarence !

Also Belbin has vieos of steam trains doing the grade. Some short clips on-

    Steam wins !!

    Great video.

  • @PROFLOP1 Hi. I only just saw this comment and request. T think I must have 82 Classes climbing the gradient. Just go to my site and scout through the videos!

  • Thanks very much. Saw the videos you uploaded. ALL great !

I went down to the end of the line at Port Kemla coal loader. Certainly a mammoth undertaking. I now know why they did not put a coal loader at Port Botany, this being a somewhat closer port .

  • Mate that is an awesome piece of video with the first scene being unbelievable!!, just raw EMD power, thanks for sharing, Cheers.

  • Thank yoiu very much-it's nice of you to say so-I video a lot of diesels crawling up that stretch but that was the most impressive to date.

  • This is a great video and very timely for me. I am making my

first trip to Australia later this month. The Zig Zag railway is

number 1 on my priority list for railfanning.

  • Thank you very much-I hope you enjoy your trip. The Indian Pacific leaves Sydney on a Saturday at about 2.55pm and returns there at 10.15 am on a Saturday, so you should try and see it there! The Zig Zag weekend steam locos leave the sheds at approximately 8.55 am, a sight worth seeing especially on a cold and frosty morning.

  • @2sk21 Hi, just wondering how your trip to Australia went and whether you managed to see any of the private railways including the Zig Zag? I also hope that you had a good trip.

  • @charade97 I had a great trip and managed to get some good railfanning. I have posted a couple of videos - search for my userid here on YouTube. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I was not able to make it to the ZigZag railway - hope to make it on my next trip.

  • I wouldn't consider locomotives built between 1977-1978 'new', these particular C class have all been rebuilt at Islington workshops and given a few upgrades as well as a 'Dulux Overhaul'.

  • Ah well, that explains it-I don't use Dulux only Pascol!

  • Bloody great vid mate. Gotta get over there soon and see all these other things!

  • Thanks-I hope you can make it!

  • Great vid but as hqkingswood said, the locos aren't new.

  • Well, my mistake! Thanks for pointing it out.

  • The locos are new, not the Class!

  • C Class's are not new, they were originally Victorian Railways locomotives built by Clyde Engineering.
