  • Wow, only a kindergarten attendee might not understand what the little clusters of squares do? More squares more focus points right? Is that it? I think my brain can comprehend that? But I understand , not everyone is smarter then a 5 grader ! Thanks Michael ?

  • @jtalada You would be surprised how many questions I would get if I didn't make it impossible to misunderstand. ;)

  • @CMule32 Did u mean 7D

  • Only 480p?

  • @Vashinator Yep- This is an actual lesson from the DVD training video. As you probably know, DVDs play on SD, which is Standard definition. Thanks

  • hi 7d users, does anybody know how to remove the square on the LCD? im tryng live broadcast and i dnot want the square to appear on the signal. thank you! :)

  • Great video keep up the good work.

  • Thanks for the help! It was really great. I was just wondering what lens do you have mounted on the 7D?

  • Hi Michael! I hope you assume there's no dumb questions, 'cause i have one! You explain how to recompose the shot after AF lock has been achieved, but why should i bother selecting the AF point first? In other words, let's say my middle AF point is currently selected: i could simply focus using this middle point and then recompose without having to select another point first, could i? Am i missing something? Looks like a waste of time to me, since i have to recompose anyway! Thanks!

  • I've removed the AF from the shutter button, and use only the AF-ON button for focusing, that way I don't have to worry about forgetting it in the AI Servo mode.

  • Hey Michael, really enjoyed the video. As someone who switched from Nikon to Canon recently, found this really helpful. Also, I'll be buying the DVD, well 2 copies, one for me and one to give away in a competition on my fan page on FB. Thanks again.

  • @renebruunphoto Thank you so much! Please send me the link when you do! Best wishes!

  • Thank you!!!!!!!! It help a bunch

  • I think this video is amazing, but I use a slightly different technique after much experimentation:

I always shoot AF SERVO but when i need to do what you were doing in your example portrait, i hold the * button with my thumb, which freezes the focus until you let it go.

This way I have the best of both worlds and can do what you were doing in your example, but i'm also prepared for shooting a face that's walking towards me.

I would try my technique if you shoot weddings.

  • great tips also you want to learn how to remember AF points and learn the AE/LOCK very important for exposer and recomposing. but MichealTheMentor probley has a vid on this already

  • But isn't the idea of all the cross type sensors to not have to recompose your shot. If you focus and recompose isn't there the chance of changing the plane of focus so that your DOF is not 'out of wack'?

Shouldn't you compose your shot and move the focus point to the area of the composed picture where you would like to focus?

  • @mjrtoo Its a good question- Unfortunately the points do not cover the entire viewfinder so there are occassions you will have to do it. DOF issues will occur with very wide apertures, and it depends on distance, but if you are shooting at f4.0 or above, it isnt an issue. While there is a sweet way to get around it using live view, *abd U teach on the Advanced course) Recomposing is a skill all photographers should know no matter what camera they are shooting with.

  • my question is the same as the one below. I tried to take a picture of two cats but only one was focused. How do you focus with there is more than one subject?

  • @hjsimpson3 That would be a Depth of Field problem more than a focusing problem.

  • What if we r doing a group picture .. I tried but only cople of peoples r in focis rest are out of focus ..

    Any suggestion please

  • Nice video! Well put together and very easy to understand.

  • well done only question at the end i'm not sure where to find cfn 3.7 on menu only seems to be c.fn 3 actually roman numeral 3 what do you mean 3.7

  • Why will the spot focus selection not stay marked after the camera is turned off? Do you have to select this everytime?

  • Thanks for the info. The example of the girl's eye at the end..... not for nothing just use manual focus

  • thank you

  • Hey Michael, A little of subject here. What lens would you recommend for the 7d as a walkaround. I am debating between the ef-s 15-85mm and the ef 17-40mm. Feel free to recommend anything else. My Budget is between $600-$750. Thanks

  • @bimmerhp48 Tamron 18-270!

  • I got my 7D last week and your lesson was the first that I learnt .in a couple weeks time I hope to order your DVD.. I've been practicing a lot feel free to see a couple results on my FLICKR page..STEPPHAN2733. Cheers from Trinidad and Tobago..

  • I've always used center-point/recompose focus, and rarely have an OOF pic. I do this even for fast-moving subjects. I'm open to changing, but I never saw the point of futzing with the focus squares.

  • Good info, but why can't people figure this out for themselves? It was easy enough for even me....

Glad there's someone who tries to help the bafoons :)

  • thanks you ! very interesting video :)

  • Immensely helpful. I really messed up a shoot yesterday because I didnt know this information. THANK YOU.

  • Thank you so much !! I hate reading through manuals, yet such a simplified explanation is so great, and enjoyable.

  • You are awsome. Tks a bunch!!! I

  • Excellent video, very informative!

  • The best so far! Many thanks. The Canon User Manual is terrible!!!

  • Thanks !!!

  • Although I agree that Auto Selection is for rooks, it does allow you to practice light and focus span tracking and the results are more pleasing, if you have light assistance. No blur.

  • You are the best teacher! ;) best regards from Italy

  • Recomposing is not very precise method. It works well only if there is enough DOF. If you want to have only an eye in focus, you shouldn use this method.

  • Michael, I surfed your website and went through your video tutorials which I thoroughly enjoyed and found very very informative. You sure have a very natural gift to make teaching seem so easy. I would love to buy your DvDs on Crash course on EOS 7D and the Crash course on Speedlite 580 EXII. Do you offer classroom style photography courses?

  • @anz388 Thank you! I occasionally do workshops- the next one will be on Maui in the near future! Come join us if you can!

  • @wynnfilms So you use manual focus when you shooting moving subject.

  • @ClankyRochet Yup! Photography 101.

  • maaaaaaaan your awesome!!

  • I still do not know how to focus on multiple subjects with the 7d. Which setting do I use to photograph a small group of children, for example?

  • Awesome stuff!!!! Very helpful as I am very new to my 7D

thank you soo much!! BIG HELP!!

    going to buy your book!!!

  • Thank you Michael ~

  • In the example with the girl, what is the advantage of choosing the square that is closest to her eye rather than leaving it on center focus and then focus/recompose over her eye?

  • @JessLee919 Shorter distance to recompose- When shooting at very wide apertures, this helps make sure the eyes are in focus.

  • Hi Michael,

thanx for video. Just a quick question that which focus mode should I use for landscape photos?

  • thanks! very helpful video!

  • excellent info

  • thank you, great video!

  • Hi Michael :)

Your videos are very informational and helpful.

I have a question about the focusing system; if I want to take pictures of a group of people, what focus type should I use?

I have been using the "beginner" focusing type and some of my subjects turned out blurry because they were not closest to the camera... :(

  • @ louisep1979 - are you in a creative or automatic mode? @ Kris- This is a DOF issue. I think you would both find my crash course on the 7D very helpful. Best wishes

  • Wondering what you reccomend for group shots at weddings??? Not getting them all focused is frustrating!!!!!

  • Hi there, loving your tutorials!

I have a question for you or any one who knows... at 2:32 in this tut we are able to make sure all autofocus/drive options are ticked on, I cant seem to tick two of the options... Expansion and spot. What and why can I not tick these on?

    Any Ideas thanks so much

  • IS there a tutorial how to use the canon 7D light metering I would love something on that

  • I just bought a 7D yesterday. Excellent training video.

  • Nice video... We shot our webisode on the Canon 7d.. Canon's make great equipment.. please check it out..

  • I didn't know about the M-Fn button. Thanks.

  • My top right button simply magnifies the camera 5 or 10X. I can't seem to pull up the focus squares... anyone have any ideas? I just picked up the camera today!

  • Sounds like you are in live view mode. In that case you press the Q button then use the M-Fn to switch between AF Area Modes, then while in the desired mode use the large and small wheels to select your individual focus point or focus cluster depending on which Area Mode you selected.

  • awesome video! subscribed!

  • THANK YOU!

  • Well i just learned some stuff I didnt even know

  • man, I wish there was someone like this guy who makes tutorials for the Nikon stuff.

  • Many Thanks to you for sharing these awesome information man :)
