Wow, only a kindergarten attendee might not understand what the little clusters of squares do? More squares more focus points right? Is that it? I think my brain can comprehend that? But I understand , not everyone is smarter then a 5 grader ! Thanks Michael ?
I love this thank you for showing me where i was going wrong. I have just done my first wedding with this camera as an upgrade and although the bride and groom are very happy i can see my errors. I love this focusing tip vid thank you! David xx
hi 7d users, does anybody know how to remove the square on the LCD? im tryng live broadcast and i dnot want the square to appear on the signal. thank you! :)
Hi Michael! I hope you assume there's no dumb questions, 'cause i have one! You explain how to recompose the shot after AF lock has been achieved, but why should i bother selecting the AF point first? In other words, let's say my middle AF point is currently selected: i could simply focus using this middle point and then recompose without having to select another point first, could i? Am i missing something? Looks like a waste of time to me, since i have to recompose anyway! Thanks!
I've removed the AF from the shutter button, and use only the AF-ON button for focusing, that way I don't have to worry about forgetting it in the AI Servo mode.
Hey Michael, really enjoyed the video. As someone who switched from Nikon to Canon recently, found this really helpful. Also, I'll be buying the DVD, well 2 copies, one for me and one to give away in a competition on my fan page on FB. Thanks again.
I think this video is amazing, but I use a slightly different technique after much experimentation:
I always shoot AF SERVO but when i need to do what you were doing in your example portrait, i hold the * button with my thumb, which freezes the focus until you let it go.
This way I have the best of both worlds and can do what you were doing in your example, but i'm also prepared for shooting a face that's walking towards me.
great tips also you want to learn how to remember AF points and learn the AE/LOCK very important for exposer and recomposing. but MichealTheMentor probley has a vid on this already
But isn't the idea of all the cross type sensors to not have to recompose your shot. If you focus and recompose isn't there the chance of changing the plane of focus so that your DOF is not 'out of wack'?
Shouldn't you compose your shot and move the focus point to the area of the composed picture where you would like to focus?
@mjrtoo Its a good question- Unfortunately the points do not cover the entire viewfinder so there are occassions you will have to do it. DOF issues will occur with very wide apertures, and it depends on distance, but if you are shooting at f4.0 or above, it isnt an issue. While there is a sweet way to get around it using live view, *abd U teach on the Advanced course) Recomposing is a skill all photographers should know no matter what camera they are shooting with.
my question is the same as the one below. I tried to take a picture of two cats but only one was focused. How do you focus with there is more than one subject?
I happened to do a random google search and it brought me to your video - thank you so much for this!!! You made it so much easier for me to understand the focusing on my 7D.
Hey Michael, A little of subject here. What lens would you recommend for the 7d as a walkaround. I am debating between the ef-s 15-85mm and the ef 17-40mm. Feel free to recommend anything else. My Budget is between $600-$750. Thanks
I got my 7D last week and your lesson was the first that I learnt .in a couple weeks time I hope to order your DVD.. I've been practicing a lot feel free to see a couple results on my FLICKR page..STEPPHAN2733. Cheers from Trinidad and Tobago..
I've always used center-point/recompose focus, and rarely have an OOF pic. I do this even for fast-moving subjects. I'm open to changing, but I never saw the point of futzing with the focus squares.
Although I agree that Auto Selection is for rooks, it does allow you to practice light and focus span tracking and the results are more pleasing, if you have light assistance. No blur.
Recomposing is not very precise method. It works well only if there is enough DOF. If you want to have only an eye in focus, you shouldn use this method.
Michael, I surfed your website and went through your video tutorials which I thoroughly enjoyed and found very very informative. You sure have a very natural gift to make teaching seem so easy. I would love to buy your DvDs on Crash course on EOS 7D and the Crash course on Speedlite 580 EXII. Do you offer classroom style photography courses?
I just got this camera and hated it in the beginning since i dont know anything baout it!! but now...........started to LOVE it after seeing your videos....
In the example with the girl, what is the advantage of choosing the square that is closest to her eye rather than leaving it on center focus and then focus/recompose over her eye?
THANK YOU for such a great video! Very clear and concise. I am an absolute newbie to the Canon EOS line and your tutorial was amazing. I will DEFINITELY be ordering the dvd and also can't wait to check out more of your videos...thanks again!
Hello, thanks for posting. I just got this camera for aerial photography, if you can please tell me how to set it right so i can have the best of the camera. Thanks again!
Michael Thanks for videos! I am doing trail ride photography with brand new 7d and challenged that either the horses head or the rider is in focus but not both in auto Af points. What would you suggest I use? Also challenged by light coming through leaves... or clouds shading sun after set for sun... or sun coming out when set for shade when the riders come through at fast and mediium speed in woods. Any suggestions for possibly a preset up? al servo or focus? they want clear background
@ louisep1979 - are you in a creative or automatic mode? @ Kris- This is a DOF issue. I think you would both find my crash course on the 7D very helpful. Best wishes
