First off, wtf is on dude's hip at 0:16? Looks like he's packin heat. Second, this is some ill fuggin riding!! What I don't get is how the cameraman is always looking straight ahead. Is it all peripheral vision clearing the intersections? Someone before mentioned that they are probably geared at 48x17. I ride a 48x15 and am wondering if this is too high? The ratios are close, but in terms of skidding and controlling/accelerating is it better to be geared lower or can this be done at 48x15?

Actually, most of the wannabe messengers don't wear helmets...

But, this guy isn't being a dick in traffic. If a bike hits a car, the car has nothing to worry about. Before getting in the saddle, a rider HAS TO and I mean MUST KNOW that he is invisible, but not invincible. Act as if NO ONE can see you. Its the bike at risk. And pedestrians in NYC should know that messengers are around and should watch out for them: its their job.

How do you keep from getting a ticket for running red lights? Can you get away from police on a bike in NYC, or is running red lights only tolerated because you bike messengers are so awesome?

Its very rare to get a ticket for running a red light on your bike. I bike in the city everyday for half a year and run reds all the time, never got stopped. If a cop does try to stop you, there's no way he'll be able to catch up.

I've only heard of a few people ever getting tickets for riding on the sidewalk. I've never seen a messenger get stopped. Messengers just do whatever the fuck they want.

Cops won't bother you unless you ride in Critical Mass. Then they follow you on mopeds and try to cut you off constantly and will ticket you for anything, even made up offenses (as happened to me). They're super militant about disrupting Critical Mass and they have whole squads of cops dedicated to tracking and following you.
