I am angered that so few acknowledge the Cook islands.. in history books they say that the Cook islanders came from Tahiti.. but its far from factual.. we all came from somewhere else.. but in the intervening years our own cultures sprouted and gave forth much diversity.. while retaining some common aspects..
Did u no that many pacific island peoples were nearly wiped out by the european invasion mostly from diseases? In Tahiti for example 10s of thousands were wiped out.. leaving only a small percentage of native Tahitian people left.. after there population was screwed by these invading cultures not much was left for them to work with..
Then there culture was stolen from them.. made to speak french.. and their cultural heritage in tatters.. they should revive their own unique culture..
Watching this makes me sick.. Revive your True Tahitian Culture.. stop stealing from the Cook Islands.. surely there are some smart people that can help your own cultures original music and dances come out.. isnt that more valuable than pretending that this dance and drumming is from your own culture when it isnt..
Do you feel some sense of worth portraying this as your own?.. Have you no pride in your own Origins that you need to steal it from someone else?
im a hula dancer and my friend went to hawaii and my dance group is the best :D (this isnt me btw) look me up on fb! ( either madi heidrich or alohis dance studio if you wanna see great dancers) ALOHA!
I agree with Gillie87, I am Tahitian and German. Despite having native blood, I am not very good at dancing XD I am still working at those hips. And yet my sister and my mother did it professionally. Dancing I mean.
Did you make your skirts? My friends and I were dancers in a luau two days ago. We have skirts like that. With the tassels. We made our skirts and we worked hard on them. In the end they turned out beautiful!
Hey Arabian Raks Shaki or the belly dance ( I don't know if that is how you spell the original name for the arabian belly dance) are tribal dances, so naturally they would have similarities. Anywhoo! This dance is awesome and I am Bangladeshi. Man I wish i knew how to dance like this. I am so happy different part of the world have different style of dances. I am learning bharatnatyam and it's cool! I love African/MidEast/Indian/Oceanic/asian dancing. So much rhythem and excitement! <3 So cool!
this is almost like belly dancing i love dance forms that are not i am trying to be racist here but common asian african latino middle eastern oceanic dances are the best!
HI!!!!! Im a tahitain dancer too! i love it!! im not from hawii, from michigan I dance at a studio where i also take 6 other classes, but any way i love it!!
I love this video. it always makes me laugh cuz the girl dancin REALLY close to the camera. lmao! it's like the person recordin kept tryna dodge that vahine. hahaha
I didn't they didn't have similar cultural aspects to Polynesia.. I already knew that lol, I just didn't read her Mariahcareynum1fans comment properly.
I think it's both, and it's their legs that determ the speed of their fa'rapuus. The hips makes the movements, while their legs adjusts the speed and the skirt just moves along=)
i used to be a hula dancer and hula dancing deepends on the legs, i had to go through many hours of moveing my hips and legs back and forth, eventually your legs and hips well naturally be able to move fast.
And for the record, the native americans also came out of Asia, Sibir. Many have common genes wich link them to koreans, and mongolians, but offcourse way back. And the evidence for the pollys coming out of asia, is their aperance, the food, and lifestck they brought witht hem, and the language. And the biggest evidence is the LANGUAGE! Both pollys and SEA belongs to the same stock; AUSTRONESIAN. You guys should read more, and talk to pollys, that knows their history, instead of racist comments!
OMG! Ignorant and racist people! Yes the pollys came from ASIA; TAIWAN. The reason why some of you act all like racists, is b'cuz you think all asians look like chinese, but no we don't . The South East ''asians'', Filipinos, indonesians, and malays, are more similar in aperance to pollys, than the ones on the mainland, as China. And it was no China, or thailand or taiwan at the time when our ancestor migrated from Taiwan, trough the Philippines, and all the way to Rapa Nui.
I just have a question here: Why in some of the videos they have the grass skirts and in others the Tahitian dancers wear the sarong's? Is that simply for show or a cultural difference in some way?
BTW, I've been to Hawaii, the Big Island on the Kona side and Maui like 6 times....BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS! It really is Paradise! Plus the culture is so fascinating!
Most anthropologists believe Polynesians originated from somewhere in Southeast Asia although there are those who believe they came from North/South America! All I know is that my Filipina gf could pass for Tahitian easily!
I don't know if we did. Can we be more specific about Asia? Is southeast like Mongolia, because I could maybe see that. A wee bit suspicious that the Asia link is gaining prominence at a time countries like China want to mine Pacific Island seabeds for minerals. My two cents.
The newest thing is from Thailand, which could make sense because Ive seen some Thais who could easily pass off for a Hawaiian/Asian mix. And to the other guy, Unless she looks like one of the guys in my pictures, I doubt she looks like a real Tahitian or any kind of Polynesian for that matter.
I'm absolutely mesmerised by theis dance, WOW!!! This dance reflects the different moods of the ocean waves of polynesia. It's absolutely seductive and fierce! I LOVE IT!!!
I use to do this kind of dance then I had two kids and lost my shape and all my coordinations.
I got looked down upon because I am only a quarter polynesian but I look more asian..But I learned all the styles of polynesian dancing, Hawaiian, Samoan, Tahitian, Tongan,etc.. It was such a wonderful experience!
Iaorana. Well you shouldn't feel bad, cuz the first polynesian people were from asia/ south east asia. I don't care if you don't belive me, and for the record, asia is not all about looking chinese, China is just one of many countries! And it's a fact that you don't have to be a native to be good at this dance, and that goes for all types of dances. You just have to put your heart and soul in it, and respect it's origin. mauruuru
@Gille87 Actually... The first Polynesians came from many places, Such as Some parts of Africa, some from Asia, and others countries too.... And I agree with you that you don't have to be a native to be good at this 'cause a lot of people who are not from Polynesia do these dances really well too.
And btw... I'm a half Hawaiian and half Tahitian Girl... and I can't move my hips as good as that hahaha :( It's very sad lol!
i love the outfits. I especially like the drumbeats. Is the music from a CD or is it done by somebody on the background playing toere drums and so fort. I would like to know the name of the music.
lol Same here. My best friend and her sister are poly (somoan and tongan) and they grew up dancing, and it bugged with big time with people who weren't pacific islander tried doing tahitian dancing...so I guess I got it from them, but I love watching them do it.
No, this is at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. They're a small school, but they're known for having one of the best lu'au shows in the Pacific Northwest.
you don't make your own costumes, never? we make all over our costumes, we order our supplies from Hawai'i, and some from Aloha hula supply but never our costumes. they do have some very nice ones though. Nice show by the way
Our Kumu Hula teaches us to make our own. she is very traditional in the polynesian ways. we have 'Olelo classes to make sure we fluently understand the songs that we dance and their meaning. The next conference is in 2009. we have about 175 members in our group. Kaimi is very talented in bringing our productins together and costumes, it's amazing. Some how she comes up with the costumes for the show. she has danced since she was three and has been teaching since she was 7years of age under Kumu hula Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu, among other's on the island of Hawai'i.
We order the bottoms (grass skirts)from hula supply and we make our belts, headdress, and we have a semistress from Hawaii Aunti Honey who sews our dresses. But any Natural fibers we order from Hawaii or the island the dance represents, like the bannana leaves. Ferns Con't - we can get from any flower shop. And of course our lays is fresh we order from Hawai'i. Our Halau is "Kaimikahu Hale O'Hula" - Kumu Hula Kaimi
