@yourboytheroy -No, 15 years before this scene, in court, she said she killed her son only so that a well off, wealthy family could raise him. She felt guilty about the girls her boyfriend killed, look for the entire episode, its great!
The best episode of Criminal minds season 1 !! i ve just now started watching it and is far more a better series ,.. more sofisticated than others like it ( ex csi ... )
Its not only about the fbi profiling mechanisms but also about the feelings and the emotions ! VERY GOOD WORK!!I also cryed lol..
This was just on and it is a brilliant piece of work. It's shows both sides of the whole death penalty argument. One side is a truly evil person who deserved to be cooked a million times over, and the other side is a woman who represents why we should NOT have the death penalty because she is not guilty and manipulated the system as have others (usually not the condemned though). Capitol punishment is flawed and should be reassessed in a thorough and comprehensive manner,
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I watched this twice in a row , i was amazed by it. Crying : ( it was so sad! i thought they would save her but i can see why she wanted to go and let her son have his life : ( That lady is an amazing actress!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is one of the most moving, powerful and superbly acted dramas I have seen. The moment when Gideon slowly steps forward and silently hugs Sarah Jean then simply stares at her in admiration reduces me to tears every time. The tension in the scene at the adopted parents' house is palpable; the father knows. The Bach is perfectly chosen too: there is a melancholy and joy in the music which is perfect. The transition to the concert, the tear on Gideon's cheek, and the quotation; pure genius.
@TheMudflap19 The same thing went through my mind. His putting his finger on his mouth was a clearly nervous "Please don't do this to my Son" "oh dear God" reaction He was thanking Morgan for allowing his Son to live his life free of knowing his Mother was on Death Row, etc.
This made me cry. Her saying she didn't want her Son to know who she was, that she was on Death Row, reviled by society, the subject of Vigilante's when she was innocent., shows who she really was beneath all the charges. Her protecting her Baby from her Husband, knowing he was a ruthless, cold blooded Murderer until the second he died shows the depth of protection she felt for her baby.
One of my absolute FAVOURITE episodes of Criminal Minds. Although it breaks my heart that Sarah Jean would rather die than let her son know who his real parents are
I keep missing the very first 45 minutes of this show every time it comes on the ION channel. But i have found on here the first minute...enough to tell me a little more. Please someone tell me how her son came to be adopted, when she told she killed him. Thank you
Superb acting and brilliant plot but the legal structure is false. An FBI has no authority to delay an American execution. Only a judge in good standing, governor of that state of the president. A really good episode though
What a horrible execution device. I understand the inspiration for the electric chair and all, but the end result is nothing like they imagined. A man was witnessed being electrocuted when he touched a live generator with his bare hands. Duh! They are doing it all wrong! If they really wanted to conduct this properly all they need is one large jolt as opposed to slow cooking, which is all they do here! It's one of our worst failures as a society in my opinion.
You have to understand, electricity was the cutting edge technology of the time, circa 1880-1890, it was seen to be a more humane method of execution than hanging. Even so, like hanging it is more of an art than science. It is adifficult thing, ending a human life, humanely.
I only saw this episode once. Although I went upstairs before the end. I just can't stand seeing the electrical chair. It horrifies me so I always go away when they show it on tv, even if it's just a tv show.
The classical piece from Criminal Minds episode Riding the Lightning is the Prelude from Johann Sebastian Bach's first cello suite. I recommend Yo-Yo Ma's recording of it.
I love this episode to pieces! Sarah Jean is just a fantastic mother :) This has to be the best episode they've ever done - Mandy and Jeannetta Arnette (who plays Sarah Jean) are a great pairing :)

Why was she put in an electric chair. I thought the electric chair was over with and they just do lethal injections now?

What's the song playing right before the cello music starts, as Sarah Jean is being prepared for execution?

So...was it impossible to find her innocent and NOT die, but at the same time let Riley live without knowing about her?

She was completely innocent, but she wanted her son to be free to do what he wants, without her burden.
