  • Sez "File could not be found". Was it taken down? George Lucas seems to not like wide, easy distribution of his work.

  • Darn it...how to fix it? ><; (Still broken on my end)

  • an error occurred please try again later

  • @boogiebuddy01 thanks for the heads up, i don't know why it's doing that, after years of working perfectly!

  • “Embedable! other uploader is a jackasss!”

    ROFLOL! (That's Rich ...)

  • what's wrong?

    ptup (error)

    whats wrong?

  • Is this a prototype film for THX 1138?

  • @Outlander11 Yeah he based it off of this. It was a short film project that he did while still in college. It only makes sense that he would want to make his first movie using one of his original ideas.

  • "WHATS WRONG?"

  • George Lucas did an awesome job with this. I almost find it to be better and more suspenseful, under your skin, and better than the actual feature film.

  • 8:25

  • 9:36 original i doser

  • This is great!

I'm a fan of the movie & this is cool to compare.

    Thanks for posting

  • Very good!

  • damn george was on some good acid

  • nah i think he was just influenced by Anthem

  • Probably the first post-cyberpunk film ever.

I'd like to know what the powerful organ music playing in the background is.

  • @BouncePounce The music is called "Passacaglia", by J.S. Bach, although it's playing with a really slow tempo.

  • Thank you ever so much.

  • @skygiest This is the original student film Lucas made. Before he made it into a full length feature.

  • Okay. I'm kind of confused about this movie. Why is there another version that looks like it was made yesterday? Did he re-release it or something? What's the deal?

  • I found this film sort of creepy and scarey

Still I love the use of Yardbirds song "Still I'm Sad" , Title of the song fits in well

  • Looks like liberal heaven.

  • Lol

  • i need something stronger

  • Its a movie guys don't get all uptight about it.

  • Yay, Capitalism!

  • One-dimensional thinking as per Samson buys-into conspiracy theory as delusional fantasy becuz it cannot bear having the notion of ordered reality upset, esp. American gov. as benevolent guarantor of civil rights & social justice. His prescription that those who disagree w/ him should be deported marks him as an extremist, an unwitting ally to the tyranny he presumes to pooh-pooh. US gov didn't 'accidentally' grossly exaggerate Cold War pretext of Soviet militarist expansion -- it was a plot..

  • Nice at least some people arent ignorant to the reality of the world around them, its sad because this madness will continue for many more generations because the children of today are subjected to such strong media tactics and irrelevent cartoons. Family Guy being the worst...

  • @HectorGraves Best way to implicate something is by tagging it onto the ed of a reasonable argument.. nice

  • "Look out cyber world!!!!!!! I, thee Tr1 be on a mission. And no one , NO ONE will stop me. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!" "Ha"

  • is this the beginning of the milimalist era?

  • Shit, this is alot of shit. Here, there is a proof that he stoled the original story for star wars from someone else!!!!, in fact, the only decent star wars film he made was "a new hope", and I have my doubts,,,

  • Dude, both the student film and the feature version are the work of George Lucas.

  • how can you relate this to Star Wars¿¿¿???

  • 2 questions:

    1. how does this prove anything? (everyone steals things from everyone else ask any writer that)

    2. what are you complaints about the Empire strikes back and return of the Jedi?

  • @nosoydecente are you kidding?

  • sorry..couldn't stay out of this...painful to hear people arguing that this wasn't the original from Lucas...

If you want proof that this IS in fact Lucas' original works, watch the "Star Wars Trilogy Bonus Material" DVD, there is an entire segment on the start and rise of Lucas' career, highlighting from the moment he started this up to the point of filming the original Trilogy of Star Wars...

  • well this was his 1st film but it was a flop, but like you said it was a building block of star wars, THX would essentially be his sound studios company, along with Lucas film, Industrial Light and Magic and skywalker productions. Pixar was origanlly sub a group moulded by ILM.

  • just because its not "the movie" does not make this original. sorry USC film student, but nothing about this is original.

ps-its also painful to watch, physically I'm in pain

  • Well, I imagine that this film was original when George Lucas made it in 1967.

  • he ran to freedome

  • Anyone know where I can find this movie?

  • I believe it's on the extras on the DVD for THX 1138

  • great mix of sounds, reverb etc...

  • That theme song sounds like "in the jungle"

    the lion sleeps tonight... lol

  • Holy crap, you're right, it totally does. :D

  • Actually, it's "Still I'm Sad" by the Yardbirds.

  • which one came first?

  • This short film... this was the Tesis film to graduate George Lucas as a Filmaker in his college

  • as a college student its bloody encouraging to see even george lucas started somewhere!

  • no doubt. conspiracy theorists are pussies ass wimps who can't gety women, to add to your rant, right on!

  • I have to laugh when they do the mind lock. He claps his hands over his ears like a scene from the old Star Trek

  • LOL WTF ROTFL......IRONY? ;)

  • In fact GL did not invent this. The reason he got to produce it is because they wanted it made. This film is a demo for how they plan to control the world. He is working for people you don't know about. All his work is by permission of his real employers. He does what he is told and is allowed to be successful. If he stops taking orders he will be dumped. search george humphreys, fearorlove com

  • Lol, saddo

  • to: finbomartini,

    I hope you are right.

  • George Lucas was truly a genius!!! However, it is sad that he decided to do kids stuff!!!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this. I just finished watching the movie and researching it online, and really wanted to see the original student film. It was great.

  • It's a shame old Lucus is too scared to do any more films like this, which is what he really wants to do. All he does now is bust out more StarWars and Indiana Jones movies when he should be doing what he's clearly good at, coming up with fresh new stories that kick ass!

  • the short is called 21-87

  • any idea on where to find that? would love to see it

  • Apparently, this was inspired by a Canadian film called 2183 or something. It had a very similar tone.

  • I remember hearing about that somewhere. Although it was 2138. That number is in Star Wars somewhere too. I think it's a cell block in A New Hope.

  • Correction: It's 2187.

  • its 21-87 by Arthur Lipsett

  • Such a discovery this video, thanks

  • oh no its bean

  • Reminds me of Fallout 3.

  • I love George Lucas.

  • In some ways, I kinda like this more than the film. :D

  • I am living in the UK and this is my world...no wonder i need happy pills

  • WHATS WRONG?!?!?!? ARE U HAPPY?

  • what is the intent of this movie ?

  • to show the human will's power, and the wanting to be free

  • i wonder if any of these actors were stormtroopers cuz they sound like em

  • It's called sound design :p

  • so did this movie inspire the island?

  • No...it didn't....it certainly didn't.

  • the original title for this short film is :

    Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB

    you should rename it.

  • COol short film!

Makes me think of Ayn Rand's 1936 short novel "Anthem" or the later 1970's movie "Logan's Run"

I wonder if this type of thing is in the future for "civilized" society

  • Slowly, the United Kingdom's government is turning their country into this.

  • very cyberpunk for it's time

  • im aware that it was pointed out that the snippet of song at 2.17 was by The Yardbirds, but i would like to identify it as Still Im Sad. Anything related with Trifecta is cool in my book, (Clapton/Page/Beck)

  • the voices at the beginning are almost the same as in the first 3 star wars movies (when ppl talk through mikes)

  • I remember seeing THX 1138 at the drive in with my family when I was 5 years old! Slaughterhouse 5 was another one I couldn't grasp at such a young age!

  • Yes me too, though it may have been on TV! Couldn't get Slaughterhouse Five at all, but for some reason THX held my interest even at that age. It's the first movie I can remember.

  • this really makes you think.

    awesome work

  • Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones: The Temple of Doom also has references to Star Wars, which features engravings of C-3PO and R2-D2 and Club Obi Wan respectively.

    I could be wrong though.

  • This is an amazing piece of work...so much of it is cold and sterile and dehumanized, but you can't avoid the raw and desperate humanity in it. The sound elements are fantastic and incredibly effective. The fact that it's a student film with virtually no budget makes it all the more amazing. Fantastic work and thank you for posting it.

  • If we judge art not by what we are granted to create it, but what we do with what we have, this is of the highest order and miraculous as it stands regardless of any shortcomings by modern standards. (and since when have we judged art by what came after?) Deeply inspired, highly personalized, as emotionally haunting as it is technically lyrical; I am shocked by the beauty of this short every time I see it.

  • Wow, one of the best youtube comments i ever read. Nice change from the usual carbage you see when you glance at the comment section below a video.

  • yeah, i think someone should copy and paste this 5000 times on different videos and see what people think

  • I think it's already been done in blogs and torrents dude.

  • lol, i'll ask Charles Johnson what the video means and I'll find out exactly what they were going for.

  • BEST SHORT MOVIE EVER!!!!

  • That was weak. I am glad Lucas got better.

  • U got any idea, what means students got for such a film? Espeically 40 years ago... there were no such things as HD cameras. No digital cutting - that had to be done with razors! And students had no funds from which they could pay tailors so they could have fancy costumes...

the film won awards for f***s sake!

  • @jedi87angel Yeah dude like Charlie Chaplin freaking had Final Cut pro when doing Modern Times, please there were and are hundreds of films better than this all around the world, all done with really shitty equipment and no funds at all,you make it sound like poor old George was struggling, dude he wasn't.

  • Rowan Atkinson is escaping! GET HIM!

  • I'll gie ye it, tht looks an awful lot like rowan atkinson haha.

  • George Lucas seems to like the "radio speaker" distorted voice. He used it in Stars Wars: A New Hope.

And, like Kapp2007 said, the blurry video transmission also shows up in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

  • This early film shows ideas that would show up again in the Star Wars films (examples: compare the Probot droid in Empire Strikes back with it's similar pixellated, jargon speak that these THX characters use- also, the scanned, blurry video images remind me of the "holographic" images seen in "Phantom Menace" and the other prequels, like the blurry video transmissions of Darth Maul, etc...if anything, this movie shows Lucas's visual ideas that would later become more famous via Star Wars

  • I'm very sorry... I simply cannot identify with all of you raving over this film. This is (in my personal opinion) one of the worst things ever committed to film. It's long, dragging, boring, and ill-defined. Really though... someone in the know... what am I missing here? Is it just supposed to be a long and blurry video of a guy running around while people track him on blurrier monitors and chatter dystopian things?

  • I think film students probably appreciate the visual aspects of this student film more than the story.

The human spirit yearns to be free. That is what I interpret from this video. No one wants to be trapped in a mundane environment and punished for refusing to perform mundane tasks. (Kind of sounds like my job.).

  • Watch some of the shit people make on here and you will see this is a fucking great short film.

  • Its experimental film . Its not for everyone. Its non linear which makes it true art.

  • its not linear?

    its experimental and linear

  • wow. you truly have to love film to devote the time and energy a small project like this would have taken. Stunning stuff. Alot of this pours out into his later work and its interesting to see similar elements here. thanks for posting this! what a rare treat :)

    jD

  • BTW, thanks for this man. It's "incredible," as one of the monitor dudes said after THX killed the droid cop.

  • Does anyone know if Lucas plans to release the original cut of the feature film on DVD any time soon? If he did it for Star Wars, he may as well do it for this. I heard that Warner Bros. cut some 10-12 minutes from the film before it came out in theaters, so it would be awesome to see that. It might be lost, though...(as it was for Kubrick's 2001)

  • Where have you been living for the last year or so, under a rock or something? It HAS been released on DVD, and in full length.

  • Yep, THX 1138 the Directors Cut is out on DVD and it's a double Disc edition, it includes the original short film (seen above) along with the re-furbished feature film

  • I love it! George Lucas is one of the best directors ever! Not the best, but one of the best.

  • I love this vid...been lookin for it fer a while. Better than the film...by a mile. Nothing can touch this vid.

  • Who's student film is this? Yours? Lucus's? I think it's great!

  • It's Lucas original student film.

  • It's George Lucas' work. One of his famed works are the Star Wars series which I am a big fan of it for many years till now and it's a big hit on the 80s. If I'm not wrong.

  • In some ways the short film is a lot better than the featurelength...

  • I LOVE the use of the Yardbirds, hilarious.

  • meh...

  • Lovely.

  • this short film has inspired me alot from lucas as well as his other work . sad he has lost his touch.

  • I think this is a great student flick.....but as far as cinefiles are concerned, the whole inspired "film school" SoCal class of Lucas, Speilberg, etc and others have gone to dust....Nothing nowadays do we get inspiring from these late 70's/80's masters than the pressure of the studios for conventional box office hits. Nothing new.....except the smell of artificial butter topping on the mega-bucket of popcorn (and don't forget to get your parking tickets validated!!!)

  • platos allegory of the cave read it.....dont watch it.

  • "Do you think we're robot clean...

Does this face look almost mean...

Is it time to be an android, not a man?

We are 138, We are 138

    We aaaaare 138 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8!"

  • holy shit, I never made the connection before!

  • The genius of Lucas is obvious in this short film; it's completely unlike the so-called "science fiction" of today that's full of flash-and-dash, monsters, and special effects galore. Wonder what he could do with this today where he to remake it.

  • This is an awesome short film, I love the notion of running from oppresion, and against all odds escaping, like the movie THX runs to freedom into the sun after a whole life spent living in oppresion, unfortunately like the movie the rising sun signals that the illuminati are also in command of the new world above.

  • Governments by their nature tend toward oppression of the people. The institutions have become more "real" than we are. Governments transcend lifetimes and generations yet most of us are just creatures of the moment. Governments are trying to take the place of God and the fact is governments don't GIVE you freedom and equality they can only attempt to take them away.

  • Strange film. I liked the musical score, the organ recital at the end reminded me of Bach.

  • the intro song is supposed to be a yardbirds song.

  • Ahead of it's time, as usual for Lucas. This movie shows us why the founding fathers allowed for the public to be armed.

  • Is the sound that bad in 2187 or was it in 1971?

  • Illuminati inspired. Back then, this concept would've been seen as something quite alien. Jargonizing an escape from suppressive rule via a technological society. Today, it's all around us, so we don't question it as alien, as we have become aliens ourselves.

  • Groooovy, man...

  • Are you all blind, this is S**T... Really I've made a big effort to watch it all(really I did) but this is AWFUL how can you say there is a bit of talent in this..

Anyway, I've got 15 minutes lost in my miserable life...

  • 9:38, compare to Chewie in Coudl City in ESB.

I know its a different director, but interesting.

  • I saw this in between the new and old trilogies. I got excited when I saw how terrifying a tale Lucas could tell by using abtract visuals, but...well you know the rest...

  • interesting first movie..

  • The feature length THX-1138 is a wonderful film, kind of lost and unknown by most. The student film is nothing that amazing to see, but I'm guessing it showcased his audio-visual talents enough to get the feature length made, which showcased his talents enough to do Star Wars.

  • brilliant, just pure brilliant. I would have liked to have seen what lucas could have done if he had not made star wars.

  • I love the other movie too. Awesome!

  • well...I like that it's student film by Lucas, but it's so slow...visually repetetive without much plot, but shows how far he has come. I dig the SciFi...

  • cool. very cool. the man has real talent it cant be argued...

  • or can it?

  • everything can be argued of course, but only for the sake of argument.

  • Indeed -- when I compare TXH-1138 to "Jar-Jar- Binks" his current works.

Your comment: "cool. very cool. the man has real talent it cant be argued..."

Rings true for THX-1138 -- but I'll argue that the Jar Jar mush can be argued.

  • my point was about talent. He is a talented man. jar jar Binks is im sure not the only blip on the mans career. Still he is a talented man none the less.

  • Agreed, he is a talented man.

  • Jar Jar Binks isn't THAT bad.

  • C3-PO could fit into THX-1138 - If you add Jar Jar and everyone would climb up out of the city.

  • Threepio would probably strongly react to his "cousins" in the film, though.

  • YES HE IS

  • What about for the sake of truth? Why argue?
