@nzKnut yeah pretty sure that team had a big bang set up tho which is why it sounds different to a normal 08 r1. standard 08 crank with different cams. two cylinders fire at the same time i think. sure someone will correct me if im wrong but im sure i read that.
@dibnah46 its an inline 4....but has no characteristics of an inline 4...firing order is identical to some v4's....traction behavior is same with a v4....which is the main reason why they chose this configuration...the crank is angled at 90 degree rather than the typical 180 degree inline 4 which makes it similar to a 90 degree v4 with a 180 degree crankshaft
@powersliding yeah i know what it is and how it works. just didnt get when u meant by saying it made an inline 4 a v4. it just didnt make sense to me. but what u meant was the characteristics are very similar which makes more sense!!
i could really hear the grunt of the R1 almost making me feel it rides like an L-twin at acceleration and then speeds up like an inline-4.. what an amzing machine. cant wait to have one.. =D
A lot of people are asking and have been asking that question? Why didn't Matt or doesn't Matt move onto WSBK or Moto GP. Some will say he never had the guts. Although I doubt it. I do think he did have some time at WSBK. Some will say he is to old now. I guess only Matt can answer that question regarding his career choices. I think he stayed in AMA because the money is really good and he wanted to just dominate at something. Who knows.
I love the sound of a cross-plane crank on just about any engine, but from a power/technical standpoint I cant see any benefit from it. Does it have to use heavy crank weights? A balancer?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i dont much like the sound of the new r1 it sounds like a beefed up scooter ( no offence) i think they should of created a new bike and left the r1 alone
Oh the sound...mmmm the SOUND! That new R1 has to be the best sounding production bike to date. Well, the most affordable sport bike. I'd really love a Ducati 1098 but that will never happen!
Guys I know you are going to hate me, but I have to run one in for 500 miles at the end of the month before we can demo it, its a tough job but someone has to do it. See you at your local Yamaha dealer.
The beginner (especially a young beginner) is the factor that can the 1000 more dangerous than the 600, because like all beginners he is overwhelmed by the speed of the bike, but because he is young, he is not as cautious as he should be about it, because young people are not very cautious :)
hey i got an 06 cbr 600rr and i love it but man the sound of the r1
how does a liter bike ride compared to a 600? i know they don't rev as high does that translate into any sort of different riding feel? i know they got loads more torque in low end though. but you gotta love the sound of a 600cc at 15,000rpm
A 600 is more dangerous than a 1000. It's all about the higher rpm at which is works. This makes the bike much more sensitive to your inputs. You have to be much more careful with your throttle on a corner for example because the power in the high rpm's is much more brutal than that in the low rpm of the 1000. Besides, also when you downshift in a 600, you better be careful with the compression braking. In a 1000 you'll be able to go faster but the power delivery and shifting is much smoother
Some of the differences between a 600 and a 1000 in feel: In a 600 as you know you don't have power at all until you reach a certain rpm. In a 1000 that power is there from 0 rpm on and when you reach higher rpm it's even higher but smoother. 1000's are just a little bit heavier (It's hard to notice it in some cases). In a 600 you have lots of dangerous compression braking (a lot less in a 1000). In the street it's easy to ride slow on a 600 (operating wise) but on a 1000 it's harder because
but on a 1000 it's harder because as soon as you engage the clutch and start moving, even if you ride at a relaxed rpm, the gear ratios are different, the bike will not go slower than a certain speed unless you are actively making an effort for this to happen (downshifting for example) whereas in a 600, as you know, you can ride slowly without making an effort. and if you want to accelerate just go past a certain rpm barrier when the power will appear. But the 1000 is still safer. It's the rider
awesome thanks for the information. shit i think everyone with a 600 without a slipper clutch has got a little overzealous with the high rpm downshift and found themselves going into a corner with the rear end skipping around like a pebble on water. heres a really simple and perhaps ignorant question-since a 1000 revs lower than a 600, does it still make that insane scream that the 600 does at 15,000+?
You welcome! From what I remember from the last time I rode a 600, if you're riding a 1000 at it's max rev, the note it makes will be very similar to the note the 600 makes at that rpm, with the difference that the 1000 sound vibrates more, it's more powerful. It's like, in sound speakers, the difference between a mid range drive and a bass drive. As the 1000 reaches less rpm's, you won't have those extremely high notes like the 600 have in their unique rpm range but there's more vrrummm :)
Isn't that kind of where alot of guys start? How many legends started in AMA, BSB, etc?
I think it'll take Spies a season to get used to the tracks/bikes and reach his full potential, but I think he'll be a front runner for alot of the '09 season.
Sorry, i was talking about Mladin, stayed in the states and rode AMA.. took the easy option..Spies good on him for making the move over to the world stage he will go well for sure
i think so to. i also think if mladin was on a competitive bike when he was on the world stage it would have been different. but he could have had the choice the last couple years and opted to bitch out in AMA which is a complete yoshi joke. oh well i hope ben goes well.

love how the 09 r1 sounds like the m1. would be fantastic if spies can bag the championship his rookie year. but the field is deep and the tracks are new to him. should be a great year for WSBK with BMW and Aprilia also returning.
toma ya como corre la YAMAHA y encima dos superpilotos Ben Spies multicampeon de la AMA y Tom Sykes campeon de superbikes de Gran Bretaña. los putos amos con una supermoto YAMAHA
I would imagine that the R1 should dominate 2009 superbikes. they rekon this new engine has the bottom end of a twin and the top end of a four cylinder, best of both worlds.
I just want to congratulate those suzuki guys for not signing Ben Spies and Tom Sykes, and keeping that old "no winner" Capirossi and the other "10th place candidate" Vermeulen.
Big fan of motorcycle racing, but YAWN at the Japanese ownership of it. Don't look to the U.S. AMA Pro Racing (DMG) - I know nobody is - but where is the FIM in all of this?
It used to be that an I4 engine was a novelty - something new and revolutionary. A typical bike was either 2 or 3 cylinders. Now, inline fours have become common due to the Japanese manufacturers all turning towards it. Now, people rave about twins and triples. Here's the deal and I could give a rat's ass if u guys don't agree. I4's in bikes changed racing and gave a HUGE advantage and it was all fair game. But they're giving fours just about every disadvantage (not just cc)
leagues are punishing fours as if they cheated or something. as if the whole thing is a conspiracy. fours didn't do anything wrong except make the bikes faster, and there's nothing unfair about what they do. different engines give different personalities. wut I mean is, why handicap something that's better just to make things "fair"? why encourage bad engineering? isnt it what competing is? to actually be better than your opponents (as long as u dont cheat).
The new R1 is not a big bang configuration. It is an inline 4 with a crossplane crankshaft. That is basically the same thing as a V4, ala Desmosedici. Did you notice it sounds like a Duc? All this crap about usable traction, marketing hype. All this crap about compression torque vs inertial torque? That means it feels like a V twin. I commend Yamaha on their stellar marketing, but at the end of the day, its just marketing hype.
Nope we can say Honda and Desmosedici are the same, likewise their crankshaft designs. Of all the Bike in MOTOGP only YZR-M1 has a unique Crankshaft Designs and they called it Crossplane. as a result it is called A Long Bang Firing Order Engine. and thats technology are installed in YZF-R1, as what Ben Spies said the BIKE is amazing; "The sound of the Engine is like an M1".
The M1 isn't a V4. That's why there's been so much fuss about the new R1, because essentially, the IL4 Big Bang engine is very similar to the GP bike.
I was a bit worried when Yamaha announced a new engine configuration for next year, but Spies and Sykes both had fantastic first rides on the new Yam. Definitely not what was expected.
wher can i find what they said about the new r1 cuz this video only showed them riding around the track - nice sound but i have no idea how the bike actually performs by watching this video
Big bang is firing two pistons together. The motogp teams offset the pulses with bespoke crankshafts in a staggered order to reduce crank stresses much like the 09 r1.
Seems so as Spies managed to come as close as 0.2 seconds to Bayliss' laprecors created a few days before on this track at the season's final races. And that on its first roll out ... without the extra 200cc! My favorit with the new Aprilia. But Haga deserves a title also! I wish he can manage it the next year even on a non-Yamaha ;). And from 2010 on also BMW must be count to the champs after one year of experience and input by Corser!
yeah so back in the beginning days the twins had 150cc more and Ducati dominated it, so now they get an even bigger displacement advantage? that's not fair, it should be @ 150cc like it was before.
Back in the ol´ days they had even more advantage, 750 4:s vs 1000 twins was the rules then, so think again. 1200 twin vs 1000 four is actually very fair.
dude just because it's not as unfair as before doesn't mean it's fair now. what the heck kind of logic is that? I'm not taking sides, I'm just pointing out the fallacy in your argument. anyhow Ducati builds badass bikes, but so does Honda and Yamaha. I'm not a big fan of Suzuki and Kawasaki though. and oh, Aprilia rocks! not sure about MV...
Listen mate, I reckon you should be grateful for only slapping your mum 10 times because I was slapping her 15 last week. Trust me, it's very fair in comparison
Sure it's fair in the sense that every manufacturer on the circuit has a chance to win. Anyway my other comment was in response to someone else who used a bad argument - and I was just pointing that out. My real opinion on this issue is this... sure I think it's FAIR per se, but the so called top end advantage of the I4 cannot make up for the extra displacement of the 1098R. There is no replacement for displacement. So fair? Yes, but does Ducati have an ADVANTAGE? Yes IMO
On the same token, that IS what racing is all about. It's finding out the opponents' weaknesses and exploiting it while taking advantage of your own strengths. Bottom line is, Ducati wins races and their production bikes are among the best. My only beef is, who the hell decided on the extra 200cc advantage? Just seems so arbitrary you know. Or maybe not, hmm... you see what I'm saying?
Yes there is a replacement for displacement. In this case you're comparing a twin to a four cylinder machine. A four cylinder machine is always going to produce more power at a given displacement. A twin must have more displacement to compete. Is 200cc a fair advantage? I don't know, but it's probably pretty close to what is needed to make a twin compete with an inline four.
a four does not always produce more power at a given displacement. It will produce more TOP END power, but a twin always will make more power EARLIER (i.g. in the lower rpm) than a four. Ducati wants more power in the lower rpm range like a true Vtwin should, but with the extra 200cc now they also want the top end to match the fours. The saying, "there's no replacement for..." is not true in a strict sense of course. I only used it to emphasize the importance of having more displacement.
anyway i don't know why people keep trying to debate with me. I'm a lover of all bikes (hehe that sounds corny). I'm not taking anything away from Ducati and their accomplishments. I'm neither Japanese nor Italian so I don't have a bias for either bikes. I'm happy no matter who wins as long as I get to watch these two wheeled beasts go flying around a track.
rules in cc relate to how much air the motors are able to pass through them, thats why back in the day 1000cc v2 were able to compete with 750 i4 then they allowed 1000cc i4 to race but restricted them, now the removed restricer plates so twins can go to 1200
Yes but that's typical for Ducati ... they knew that if they get a new reglement it will always be an advantage for the new thing. The more displacement doesn't mean more power than the 4 cylinders have but its not possible to reduce the torque of these Ducatis even not with restructors. The torque is the big advantage. The SBK bosses said that they need to see how to keep the Ducs in the range of the rest ... it didn't work so far!
And then Ducatic comes up with their tradition ... they run 4 cylinders in MotoGP as well and also Aprilia doesn't have a problem with 'breaking up' with tradition when running the V4 next season in SBK! Also low rpms are better to control than high rpms. That's why Ducati and Honda were that successful in the past with only Haga that fought for the title on his R7 because he's THE SBK-racer!
the black bike is the 2009 version, and the red/white is the 2008. they tested both the same day. the 2009 sounds exactly like the motogp M1 because it shares basically the same big bang motor.
i tink the black r1 is the 2009 but the red and white color is 2008 and the black sounds like m1 nice bike... cnt w8t to si hr in qatar losail race track
Is this faked?? On off the Bike is 2008 Sbk The other maybe is 2009. It sounds different but would not say souund good!! All Bike sounds nice with a loud pipe!!! But did u ever hear the M1 in Moto Gp? And did u hear the Ducati? Dont tell me the M1 sound better! The M1 sounds a like Engine thats gonna break last min! But its good Engine. I will go to take a ride next year with R(M)1
Only the black bike is a 2009 R1 - the red bike is the previous years 08 R1 with the standard crank, which is why it sounds like a standard IL4

Noticed no one commented on Mladin. No one seems to care. Surprised? Nope.

I would imagine that the R1 should dominate 2009 superbikes. they rekon this new engine has the bottom end of a twin and the top end of a four cylinder, best of both worlds.

usually, i´m a suzuki fan. but in the last time
i cant get my eyes off the R1 models from first to latest. can someone speak with me about that? pm someone please

I just want to congratulate those suzuki guys for not signing Ben Spies and Tom Sykes, and keeping that old "no winner" Capirossi and the other "10th place candidate" Vermeulen.

This bike hasnt just guts,
it has fire,
in low rpm´s it sounds a bit like an old V8 monster, in the middle you can feel the power by just listening and over 10000 runs it screams :)

FUCKING DOPE!

But they're giving fours just about every disadvantage (not just cc)
bye2u2night 3 years ago
leagues are punishing fours as if they cheated or something. as if the whole thing is a conspiracy. fours didn't do anything wrong except make the bikes faster, and there's nothing unfair about what they do. different engines give different personalities. wut I mean is, why handicap something that's better just to make things "fair"? why encourage bad engineering? isnt it what competing is? to actually be better than your opponents (as long as u dont cheat).

What a sound I want one
themuss28 3 years ago
The new R1 is not a big bang configuration. It is an inline 4 with a crossplane crankshaft. That is basically the same thing as a V4, ala Desmosedici. Did you notice it sounds like a Duc? All this crap about usable traction, marketing hype. All this crap about compression torque vs inertial torque? That means it feels like a V twin. I commend Yamaha on their stellar marketing, but at the end of the day, its just marketing hype.
PheloniusRM 3 years ago
Nope we can say Honda and Desmosedici are the same, likewise their crankshaft designs. Of all the Bike in MOTOGP only YZR-M1 has a unique Crankshaft Designs and they called it Crossplane. as a result it is called A Long Bang Firing Order Engine. and thats technology are installed in YZF-R1, as what Ben Spies said the BIKE is amazing; "The sound of the Engine is like an M1".
rafdraft 3 years ago
i think kawi or suzuki uses a crossplane too
MikEtheGimP 3 years ago
doesnt sound like an inline four..? but what a job...paid to ride there all day
pmay222 3 years ago
The firing order is different...about 90 degrees apart. Hence the V4-ish sounding exhaust note.

yes...that's right!!!!
gabrirs 3 years ago
The M1 isn't a V4. That's why there's been so much fuss about the new R1, because essentially, the IL4 Big Bang engine is very similar to the GP bike.
aaron0288 3 years ago
I thought that all the GP bikes were v4 :)
So the Yamaha isn't? Is is the only one?
euheide 3 years ago
Ducati, Honda and Suzuki have V4's.
Yamaha and Kawasaki run Big Bang IL4's :)

Big bang is firing two pistons together. The motogp teams offset the pulses with bespoke crankshafts in a staggered order to reduce crank stresses much like the 09 r1.
beugie46 3 years ago
There's always only one cylinder fired here. But the ignitions come closer, distanced, closer, distanced ...
720° for 4 ignitions: 270-180-90-180

is it faster?
mdemory 3 years ago
Seems so as Spies managed to come as close as 0.2 seconds to Bayliss' laprecors created a few days before on this track at the season's final races. And that on its first roll out ... without the extra 200cc! My favorit with the new Aprilia. But Haga deserves a title also! I wish he can manage it the next year even on a non-Yamaha ;). And from 2010 on also BMW must be count to the champs after one year of experience and input by Corser!
StefanR0 3 years ago
200cc more but it has 2 cylinders not 4.
diablo29 3 years ago
yeah so back in the beginning days the twins had 150cc more and Ducati dominated it, so now they get an even bigger displacement advantage? that's not fair, it should be @ 150cc like it was before.
DoctorNumber46 3 years ago
Back in the ol´ days they had even more advantage, 750 4:s vs 1000 twins was the rules then, so think again. 1200 twin vs 1000 four is actually very fair.
vithaj92 3 years ago
dude just because it's not as unfair as before doesn't mean it's fair now. what the heck kind of logic is that? I'm not taking sides, I'm just pointing out the fallacy in your argument. anyhow Ducati builds badass bikes, but so does Honda and Yamaha. I'm not a big fan of Suzuki and Kawasaki though. and oh, Aprilia rocks! not sure about MV...
joonsuk88 3 years ago 3
haha no kidding
Listen mate, I reckon you should be grateful for only slapping your mum 10 times because I was slapping her 15 last week. Trust me, it's very fair in comparison
lmao what the fack is that?
6hundredrr 3 years ago
Um, yes it is fair, the twin got more torque but the four has more top end.
vithaj92 3 years ago
Sure it's fair in the sense that every manufacturer on the circuit has a chance to win. Anyway my other comment was in response to someone else who used a bad argument - and I was just pointing that out. My real opinion on this issue is this... sure I think it's FAIR per se, but the so called top end advantage of the I4 cannot make up for the extra displacement of the 1098R. There is no replacement for displacement. So fair? Yes, but does Ducati have an ADVANTAGE? Yes IMO
joonsuk88 3 years ago
On the same token, that IS what racing is all about. It's finding out the opponents' weaknesses and exploiting it while taking advantage of your own strengths. Bottom line is, Ducati wins races and their production bikes are among the best. My only beef is, who the hell decided on the extra 200cc advantage? Just seems so arbitrary you know. Or maybe not, hmm... you see what I'm saying?
joonsuk88 3 years ago
Yes there is a replacement for displacement. In this case you're comparing a twin to a four cylinder machine. A four cylinder machine is always going to produce more power at a given displacement. A twin must have more displacement to compete. Is 200cc a fair advantage? I don't know, but it's probably pretty close to what is needed to make a twin compete with an inline four.
Karat6 3 years ago
a four does not always produce more power at a given displacement. I only used it to emphasize the importance of having more displacement.
joonsuk88 3 years ago
anyway i don't know why people keep trying to debate with me. I'm a lover of all bikes (hehe that sounds corny). I'm not taking anything away from Ducati and their accomplishments. I'm neither Japanese nor Italian so I don't have a bias for either bikes. I'm happy no matter who wins as long as I get to watch these two wheeled beasts go flying around a track.
joonsuk88 3 years ago
rules in cc relate to how much air the motors are able to pass through them, thats why back in the day 1000cc v2 were able to compete with 750 i4 then they allowed 1000cc i4 to race but restricted them, now the removed restricer plates so twins can go to 1200
BigBadWolf62701 3 years ago
Yes but that's typical for Ducati ... they knew that if they get a new reglement it will always be an advantage for the new thing. The more displacement doesn't mean more power than the 4 cylinders have but its not possible to reduce the torque of these Ducatis even not with restructors. The torque is the big advantage. The SBK bosses said that they need to see how to keep the Ducs in the range of the rest ... it didn't work so far!
StefanR0 3 years ago
And then Ducatic comes up with their tradition ... they run 4 cylinders in MotoGP as well and also Aprilia doesn't have a problem with 'breaking up' with tradition when running the V4 next season in SBK! Also low rpms are better to control than high rpms. That's why Ducati and Honda were that successful in the past with only Haga that fought for the title on his R7 because he's THE SBK-racer!
1 reglement ... join or let it be is my opinion.
StefanR0 3 years ago
baylis rides a 1098, thats only 100cc more, and it still cant compete top end power with the r1 or gsxr1000, or honda
GuerillaDick 3 years ago
MY Bad u are correct 1098r is a 1200

yep, sounds very close to M1. I sense some technology is trickling down to SBK R1 from the MotoGP bike :)

the new '09 R1 has the same firing order as the M1, and shares the Cross-Plane Crankshaft.
lifesuxdie 3 years ago
the black bike is the 2009 version, and the red/white is the 2008. they tested both the same day. the 2009 sounds exactly like the motogp M1 because it shares basically the same big bang motor.
