I know the entire Handley Family and the members of the Radio Rats. We made Springs and Welkom rock in the `70`s. This is really a blast from the past. Johnathan, I still have your 7 single you gave me in 1982 of the Chauffers. So good to see you again, Johnny Sparkplug. You still be putting people to sleep.???. Best wishes Alan Makings.
I was raised in Springs and saw the Radio Rats at the Polo Club in the 70's.
I remember one classic night in the late 70's with my friend Wendy when we went pub crawling in Hilbrow with Dave Davies. We got into every club and bar without paying cause everyone knew who Dave was. Such fun in Hillbrow in the 70's and 80's.
This is one of the SA youth anthems from that time along with Charlie by Rabbit and a few others.
I have the pleasure of knowing Jonathan Handley and played on the same line-up as him this weekend in South Africa (14 may 2011) in memory of another of South Africa's greatest musos' the late Syd Kitchen.
They still play every friday night at a oub in springs called 'the coffin pub' and still sounding just the same! I changed the lead singers geysers the other day lol
Oh God Oh God One of the band members owned a record shop in Springs and when I was 14 I went there with my Mum looking for some UK records and he suggested this Radio Rats record I said no way man that's crapI didn't know it was him it's not that bad actually so if you are reading this sorry man I was just a silly kid ha ha ha !!!
See Radio Rats Live on 29 August 2009 at Springs Civic Centre! It promises to be a good old trip down memory lane. Their supporting act, Savage Reflex is the next big SA band. See youthere
This has got to be one of my all time favourite tracks! I knew them briefly .. they caused a big stir in my home town with the church leaders back in '79/80 LOL
Loved this song then and now - see Dave doing his thang with Ozzie Feb 2009 - I tried to post the URL here but didnt take so search for Dave Rat and Ozzie Irish
Hey there tmitchellza tried to check the perlemoen as suggested but all i got was this video is no longer available - let me know if there is any other way of seeing it please - Jonathan lived near me while he was studying if i remember correctly - he became a doc hey? I dont think he would remember me though i was a snot nosed kid when he was at vasity - but nevertheless I do know his music and I also know he is an amazing musician so would really like to see/hear the video youre talking about

That's bad news about Syd Kitchen passing! I had his album with the Utensils.
I heard the Radio Rats got back together for a gig at Springs Town Hall not too long ago.

Makes me think of "Once Were Warriors"...
In the 70s and 80s SA produced some staggeringly good music only for it all to evaporate thanks to global isolation.
Yup, musically we once were great.
Having said that we did just win the World Cup and Seether is damn good. Perhaps there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I lived in Springs at the time.... a hundred years ago. Best band SA produced. Better than Rabbit and the other commercial kuk.
