Wonderful. When children were children and new how to have fun without computers and mobiles. When I was 6 my sister was 8 and we shared her 2 shillings a week pocket money. .(10p). We would bus into Leigh and have a 3d boat ride and some sweets. Then we would walk into Leigh Police station and tell them we had no money to get home. They gave us a lift home everytime. The sum total of my criminality ! Eee.
Great film Sharon such great memories that we hold so close to our hearts, My Nan lived just off of sutton road, called Swange Rd I aways rember having to get the parafin can filled up for my grandad at the top of swange road...lol
Loved this! Thanks for posting. You all look so happy. I was a Rayleigh kid then. I remember the "Regal", the Saturday matinee (& the ticket collector standing at the door with his hand out saying, "Stink bombs! Stink bombs!" (as if any naughty kid was going to hand them in). I remember the national anthem always playing at the start with footage of the Queen. Got uprooted & sent to a child-migration home in Western Australia in 1970 - I miss the 1960's! - Thanks again.
Hi Sharon, it's me again, I left comments earlier on.
I just wondered if you hadn't visited the 'Southend Forum' on the internet, I'm sure you'd enjoy it. It has a veritable haven of memories from Old Southend as it used to be.
Indeed I would recommend every 'Sarfender' to check it out as there is something for for everyone regarding the past, present and future of our old town.
As I can't place a link on YouTube just enter: southend-on-sea forum with Google and you should find it. Enjoy!
I remember saturday morning pictures at the Ritz. An old boy with an accordion use to keep us entertained till the flicks started. Poor old sod was shouted at and booed by the local angelic children.
I remember taking my PSV (Bus) licence test (1971) up Pier Hill then turn sharp right at the top and then left by the Ritz. Try to do that now:-)
At the intermission when the ice-cream girls came down, in my best 'macho' style I asked her if she wanted an ice. She said yes so I got in the queue. Having made my purchase I turned away,
unfortunately so did the ice-lady but managed to put her high-heel into the back of my shoe. Whooops, down she went, so did her heavy tray with all her wares rolling everywhere. I'm ashamed to say I didn't stop to help her but slunk away like a coward. Don't ask me what the film was, it wasn't 'Titanic'.
Not that it's very important but regarding my first comment I may have gotten my figures wrong as they don't 'pan out', besides you couldn't always rely on 'skipping' the bus fare... so it might have been either liqourice twigs OR choc-ice but not both... time plays strange games. I do remember however if one had registered oneself in the Ritz cinema's childrens Saturday morning matenée club they sent you a free entrance ticket on your birthday.
While a brat of about 10, living in Burnaby Road near the gasworks, using an old pram I used to collect coke for the neighbours. Paying 2/6 at the gatehouse for a ticket for 28lbs and adding an extra 'hidden' 6d to the ticket the actual shoveller would fill another 28lbs sack I brought with me hee hee. It was a secret of course and I used to make a bomb being also paid for the collection itself. They never found out but my mum did ugh! so that was the end of that..
I used to get a shilling from mum then travel by bus from Shoeburyness to the Ritz Saturday morning matenée after having picked up some 'Spanish wood' (liqourice twigs) at the tobacconist situated between 'Goings' (the anglers shop on the corner) and the little café (with pin tables) at the top of Pier hill. I believe the cinema admittance fee was six-pence. Even bought a choc-ice half way through and still had enough left over for the bus back home. lol
I remember the liqourice twigs, it has been so nice people putting their memories in the comments on my cine uploads, it has triggered so many of my own. Thank you
Back then we did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all. No cable TV, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no computers, or Internet chatrooms.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!
We lived for saturday morming pictures, a sky ray and our weekly comic!
where abouts up sutton road is this then? is it near the sports fields by the fire station? there arent alot of houses as nice as that up sutton road anymore lol.
i was born in sos in 62..lived on ashurst ave..my family still owns as they did then belle vue motors on s/church rd..letd sos in 76 for america and been here since...reminder of what seems a whole other life ty

Again at the Ritz several years later while in my teens:
Embarrassment literally spotlighted.
With my best stitches on and every hair in place I took my girlfriend to the pictures... [Continues)
