In Gospel of John, Jesus says to this Apostles, he whose sins you forgive are forgive, he whose sins you bind, are bound. Does that refer to me binding YOUR sins ? Can I forgive YOUR sins. Of course not. Just as in the time prior to JEsus, forgiveness of sin was done via priestly confession. Protestants become protestants because they prefer sin over the holy life.
