Being an audiophile for years and an upcoming artiste, i respect the company because of the sonic standards they have been maintaining for years. u may b right, but looking back to my experience with sony for over two decades (including the service issues), i was completely satisfied everytime.
The sound quality is excellent. I bought one in august and I still love it. The sound quality difference with ipods is huge. Of course, if you don't care about sound quality -music- you can buy anything from apple.

Absolutely. i can honestly say that the sound quality is amazing. I set up a custom equalizer and I am hearing sounds on songs I never heard before. This is with the Stock Earbuds provided.
I would like to buy this one as well, but how will you manage to get all your perfectly organized music from iTunes into the same order in Media Player? No need to lose I-Tunes. I transferred my whole Music Library from Itunes straight to my Sony using the transfer software provided. Easy as hell. Never had to use Windows Media Player at all!
no but im sure the noice cancelling is better when you use the original headphone whit the devise use sony headphone (whit the X) will not cancel the noise ! if you use a ipod or .....
i use a pair of apple ear phones that came with the iphone they work perfectly and the noise canceling works with them you can use other ear phones but you have to be sure the little jack has 3 rings on it for the noise canelation to work normal headphones work but if they dont have the 3 rings on the jack your nc switch on the player is pretty much useless
it means u can use your own earphones, he means u can't use just any earphones if u want noise cancelling. if u want noise cancelling u have to use special headphones, if u don't use ur own headphones
After testing and listening holding and playing around with all the mp3 players on the market, i have decided to got with the Archos 5, i can't believe why is the Archos such a not known brand, because the quality blow the iphones, sony and all the rest to dust.
because the archos is much bigger and not a good choice for those on the go a lot. I pod touch is too big to carry around for me, i like then the sonys due to size.

I suppose that sony only supports 3gp as a video format... try converting ur video into that format. At least with my NWZ-S616F it's that way. Lemme know how it goes.
Just got mine yesterday. It's a superb piece of kit. The sound quality is stunning and blows the iPod Touch out of the water (my son has one so I can compare). The Web Browser is rubbish but You Tube application is great as well. Worth the dosh. Well done Sony (but offer support to Mac Users Please).
Im weighing towards the Sony more and more, the sound quality is superb and i do like the youtube and podcast feature but if you can reply and tell about the cons about the web browser I really appreciate it, the ipod touch is a toy. im looking for an orgasm in my ears
The browser is rubbish. It connects to my wireless router easily but then it's very slow. It has jerky movements and is difficult to zoom and so on. Also, web-sites don't recognize the player as a mobile device so it loads full web sites which are then difficult to navigate. It's a problem I think and Sony need to get it sorted - new firmware coming out?
l0l the "Walkman" sounds bad? that thing started back in the late 70s and changed how you listen to music, made it portable. It was 1 of the firsts, you had no iPods or Zunes back then, you only had Walkman. It deserves respect for being a brand that stood for so long and will probably continue to represent music on the go. It's the grand dad to the portable music players u see now.
Yeah I know many think Ipod is THE thing. Not just the Ipod but people believe Apple is the leader in innovation like the Chiclet or spaced out keyboard they have in their macbooks, when Sony actually made VAIOs with that keyboard years before the first Macbook but ask any apple fan boy and they'll say sony and other companies stole it from Apple :). They say you get what you pay for and sony can justify the price with the build quality and materials used. This walkman is amazing!

I think the reviews are comparing it with the Ipod Touch. and indeed it is in the same category of touch screen PMPs. The sound quality and screen are better with the Sony, and it does have a FM radio. It's UI is good.
However it lacks installable applications and games, it's NetFront browser is awful for anything but basic WAP sites. It does not have gapless playback, no support for lossless codecs, no support for Audible audiobooks. The bundled software is atrocious.
The Sony X owns recent Ipods on sound quality, but for everything else it's crap.
The thing cant even do gapless playback. So for me it's good sound quality is totally ruined by the one second gaps when listening to continuous mix albums. Plus the lack of support for lossless codecs like FLAC, is fail as well.
I had an X for 3 days, returned it for a refund, totally disappointed with it. Now gone back to my normal players, an older Ipod 5G and Iriver H100 both loaded with Rockbox.
Ipods suck at the most important thing; Sound Quality! Even ~£20 Sony, Creative, samsung etc players got excellent audio, ipods review never mention sound experience but always the "sleekness, slimness and ipodness which has become the so called "cool factor" amongst the celebs ppl worship but hardly do for a true audiophile
Excellent sound quality ruined by a very serious flaw. This player does NOT have gapless playback. This is totally inexcusable and very poor design. I like to hear my DJ mix albums without gaps please Sony.
I've had an X series for a couple of days, but I'm getting a refund tomorrow, as a player which does NOT support gapless playback is of no use to me.
Staying with my Rockboxed Ipod Video, great sound and gapless playback, we likes that.

I think the nearest would be Winamp or JetAudio. Both are free, but are PC only. There is also the FOSS Songbird, this I've not tried but looks good, and is available for Mac. Linux and Windows.
The Sony player does come with 'Media Manager for Walkman'. But it's a rather bad programme, very clunky and buggy. Reminded me of the infamous SonicStage and Connect. Quite possibly 'Media Manager for Walkman' was written buy the same peeps who wrote SonicStage.
Watching movies on this thing should be incredible,should sound way better than the ipod touch, and i have a ipod touch, but i think this thing beats it in sound quality

The sound quality is fine with the ipod touch as long as you change out the stock headphones. Apple have released a set for about £55 which are decent, noise cancelling and contain a mic so you can skype.
The screen is apparently better on the sony, but its smaller and doesnt have multitouch, which limits uses.
The review also fails to mention the bad browser, poor keyboard, lack of accelerometer and the fact that the app store makes the ipod so much more versatile and interesting.

Apple have released some proper headphones for it (about £50 uk) which are noise canceling and contain a remote and microphone. From what ive heard they cure all the quality problems, they also allow you to chat on skype and messenger over wifi.
Yes its more than just a music player, thats the whole deal behind technological convergence. If you want just music, then you can get a shuffle, if you want something with a touchscreen then its likely going to be an all round media device.
it is not about the headphone, a good headphone will only show the bad playback quality even more clearly. The eq on ipod is also extrememly bad.
This really is a lot better than ipod in any way, and I am sure the sale of ipod will still beat this but hey, this is for someone who has passion in the quality of music rather than showing off flashy things.
The sound quality is fine on the iPod but no where near as detailed and pleasant as a Walkman device. Apple have not released "Noice Cancelling" earphones, only ones that "block out ambient noise". There is a difference, N/C is an electronic way of blocking out noise while the other is done by "plugging" the ear.
I think this device will only appeal to people who like their music with passion and have very expensive earphones (brands like UE, Shure, etc.) and want to make full use of them.
sound quality on ipods is still not really good! i've got the new "nano" ... i was really dissatisfied when i bought it! Because the headphones are also noise cancelling (not just the walkmam) It's just common sense that any random headphones could't be used be used for the noise cancelling facility. This isn't Sony's first MP3/4 player to have noise cancelling and they worked the same way with the headphones.
it's not proprietary headphones guys, thats only for the noise cancelling which although is a brilliant feature isn't completely necessary, especially if you have your own noise issolating earphones
Proprietary Headphones is a bummer. The Feature-Set looks like an iPhone. A big company like Sony can dominate a market, yet offers mediocre items, at times. Besides, iTunes has no real competitor, offers Movie Rental, and the largest Podcast Directory around. Get a Mac :)
i will be sticking with my iphone 3g. this does look like a really nice walkman but does not look anywhere as good as the iphone/ipod touch. applications are another thing that sells really well for apple sony will have to try something similar in order to outsell apple.
I'm sticking with the Samsung P3. The cheapest Sony X will be $300 (16GB) while the P3 is only $150 (8GB) and $200 (16GB). As much as I like Sony products, their prices tend to be on the high side. Also, they tend to make thier products so that you must buy add-ons for some stuff to work. For example, I have a PSP (Slim). It required of me to buy a $40 memory stick pro duo for a mere 2GB of memory. Fortunately I got one off of ebay for $15 w/ free shipping.

People go for iPod because of "trends". It has nothing except for the apps which have nearly useless functions. This is what true and real mp3 players should be like, long lasting, good quality hardware,music,video and eco friendly (OLED).
i agree allthough the ipod looks cool i trust sony much more apart from their high prices you know you're getting something that's the best in quality especially when it comes to mp3's they work. period . (and dont break down like ipods!) + they always become cheaper in like a month anyway.

Not really, I have a Sony NWZ-436F which cost me $80 for a 4GB. It's what, $140 for the iPod nano 8GB? GB for GB the the Sony is a better deal, Also you can pick up a 8GB version for less still.
The Sony X1000 touch is more then the touch, but better features.
Only bad thing from it is slow internet but still great product

Great player with some major bads:
-Midbass at 200-400 sounds weakly, (and poorly compensated with bass)
-really Warning: the coating in headphones wires is Very weak and starts cracking fast.
-no recording from radio! :(
-No recording voice!
-radio cracks easily

Just wondering, why has every review of this player complained about the Price!!!!! its slightly cheaper than the I Pod touch at the same capacity, and still ads a oled screen and other nice features, as well as superior sound quality

I think the reviews are comparing it with the Ipod Touch. and indeed it is in the same category of touch screen PMPs. The sound quality and screen are better with the Sony, and it does have a FM radio. It's UI is good.
However it lacks installable applications and games, it's NetFront browser is awful for anything but basic WAP sites. It does not have gapless playback, no support for lossless codecs, no support for Audible audiobooks. The bundled software is atrocious.

The Sony X owns recent Ipods on sound quality, but for everything else it's crap.
The thing cant even do gapless playback. So for me it's good sound quality is totally ruined by the one second gaps when listening to continuous mix albums. Plus the lack of support for lossless codecs like FLAC, is fail as well.
I had an X for 3 days, returned it for a refund, totally disappointed with it. Now gone back to my normal players, an older Ipod 5G and Iriver H100 both loaded with Rockbox.

Excellent sound quality ruined by a very serious flaw. This player does NOT have gapless playback. This is totally inexcusable and very poor design. I like to hear my DJ mix albums without gaps please Sony.
I've had an X series for a couple of days, but I'm getting a refund tomorrow, as a player which does NOT support gapless playback is of no use to me.
Staying with my Rockboxed Ipod Video, great sound and gapless playback, we likes that.

I think the nearest would be Winamp or JetAudio. Both are free, but are PC only. There is also the FOSS Songbird, this I've not tried but looks good, and is available for Mac. Linux and Windows.
The Sony player does come with 'Media Manager for Walkman'. But it's a rather bad programme, very clunky and buggy. Reminded me of the infamous SonicStage and Connect. Quite possibly 'Media Manager for Walkman' was written buy the same peeps who wrote SonicStage.

The sound quality is fine with the ipod touch as long as you change out the stock headphones. Apple have released a set for about £55 which are decent, noise cancelling and contain a mic so you can skype.
The screen is apparently better on the sony, but its smaller and doesnt have multitouch, which limits uses.
The review also fails to mention the bad browser, poor keyboard, lack of accelerometer and the fact that the app store makes the ipod so much more versatile and interesting.

Apple have released some proper headphones for it (about £50 uk) which are noise canceling and contain a remote and microphone. From what ive heard they cure all the quality problems, they also allow you to chat on skype and messenger over wifi.
Yes its more than just a music player, thats the whole deal behind technological convergence. If you want just music, then you can get a shuffle, if you want something with a touchscreen then its likely going to be an all round media device.

it is not about the headphone, a good headphone will only show the bad playback quality even more clearly. The eq on ipod is also extrememly bad.
This really is a lot better than ipod in any way, and I am sure the sale of ipod will still beat this but hey, this is for someone who has passion in the quality of music rather than showing off flashy things.

The sound quality is fine on the iPod but no where near as detailed and pleasant as a Walkman device. Apple have not released "Noice Cancelling" earphones, only ones that "block out ambient noise". There is a difference, N/C is an electronic way of blocking out noise while the other is done by "plugging" the ear.
I think this device will only appeal to people who like their music with passion and have very expensive earphones (brands like UE, Shure, etc.) and want to make full use of them.

sound quality on ipods is still not really good! i've got the new "nano" ... i was really dissatisfied when i bought it! (you can't use the equalizer, because then the music sounds horrible) ... it's just the same with the iphone, design is good, display is good, touch is the best, software is good... but you can forget the rest of the hardware in comparison to other phones!

Because the headphones are also noise cancelling (not just the walkmam) It's just common sense that any random headphones could't be used be used for the noise cancelling facility. This isn't Sony's first MP3/4 player to have noise cancelling and they worked the same way with the headphones.

Proprietary Headphones is a bummer. The Feature-Set looks like an iPhone. A big company like Sony can dominate a market, yet offers mediocre items, at times. Besides, iTunes has no real competitor, offers Movie Rental, and the largest Podcast Directory around. Get a Mac :)

i will be sticking with my iphone 3g. this does look like a really nice walkman but does not look anywhere as good as the iphone/ipod touch. applications are another thing that sells really well for apple sony will have to try something similar in order to outsell apple.

I'm sticking with the Samsung P3. The cheapest Sony X will be $300 (16GB) while the P3 is only $150 (8GB) and $200 (16GB). As much as I like Sony products, their prices tend to be on the high side. Also, they tend to make thier products so that you must buy add-ons for some stuff to work. For example, I have a PSP (Slim). It required of me to buy a $40 memory stick pro duo for a mere 2GB of memory. Fortunately I got one off of ebay for $15 w/ free shipping.

Not really, I have a Sony NWZ-436F which cost me $80 for a 4GB. It's what, $140 for the iPod nano 8GB? GB for GB the the Sony is a better deal, Also you can pick up a 8GB version for less still.
The Sony X1000 touch is more then the touch, but better features.
