  • This is cool but why doesn't it talk....

  • Back when cars flew...

  • This was a disgrace to the original 1966-1970 Toronado.

  • lol how many kids out there jumped their parents toronados after seeing that commercial

  • My first car was a 1988 Toronado. It was mauve with matching interior.

  • TURBO BOOST lol you gotta love that

  • did the car not jump exactly like that in the pontiac fiero ad?

  • grandma's car

  • I have gray interior of the Oldsmobile 87, same colors on the outside, only he does not drive is broken, and I have the very first Nissan 300ZX 1984

  • god i miss that car, though the 1986-89 was cool i like the 90-92 models better especially the trofe'o with the VIC display that was awesome

  • if you see a car flying through the air...you know they are really trying hard to sell a product nobody wants.

  • @203207ab They wanted them back then!

  • i am lovin that whole console right down to that horse shoe shifter.

  • Engine didn't have enough power to drive through the desert like that, even with a good tail wind. It was a 231V-6 with about 170 hp max. Great on gas though. Steering was not so great.

  • warranty voided by driving thru the the desert like that.

  • I agree that America should have their own style as they always were above the rest when it came to styling. But......they are giving people what they seem to want. It seems like people who think like me are becoming more and more scarce. Nobody and I mean nobody designed cars like Earl and Lee of yester-years. Let's throw in Delorean too.(GTO)(GRAND PRIX)

Now that America is building quality--bring back the styling to go with it. Can I get an Amen?!!

  • Amen

  • amen to that brother =)

  • WTF they could FLY?!? I'd seen many on the road in my days, but never noticed a single one with that option, maybe it was a dealer add on?

  • i have an 87 olds toronado and the car only has 75,000 on it and its great but i wish i had it in BLACK

  • Bright RED? Why was soo many american car companies hooked on such loud interiors in the 80s is beyond me.

  • the interior on those cars look freaky! I love it - never seen before, or after this time. Especially love the ones with the GCC was years was certainly ahead of its time

  • Nice car.

  • LOL that car would have been destroyed doing a jump like that

  • This is when they RUINED the car with that boring drab box look they all had not to mention a lit dashboard that they might as well have been advertising a plane. Hence Oldsmobile line dies. It was a really nice car at one time and this helped push front wheel drive (Riviera too). Thinking of it all - all these multiple lines/looks within GM has killed them. Too bad too - there were some gems. RIP GM.

  • Didn't the 1986 Toronado also switch back to the scary buzzer after being downsized?

  • I think it did actually - come to think of it. They just ruined these cars then. They all looked the same. Same frame, unibody, engine, little boxy bullshit that had no style at all. This supposive engineer move to turn to economics did zippo not to mention the climate control systems in all these cars were a wiring nightmare. Well, one mans happy - the Ex CEO has a nice 25 million in his pocket!

  • Did the 1986 Toronado come with a chime like the 1982-85 Toronado or a scary buzzer like the 1982-87 Chevy Custom Deluxe?

  • No I just checked with a friend of mine that had one and it was the scary buzzer BUT it's brother the Riviera came with a chime. Hope that helps.

  • What year is your friend's Toronado and did the 1982-85 Toronado come with a chime or a scary buzzer?

  • I just got a very rare 1988 Trofeo convertiblle, a REAL convertible with 70K near mint condition. From what I understand only 8 were made. I had a 88 coupe and swaping out the interiors.

I will be adding the very cool VIC video screen.

Working on animating the tail lights.

I just love all th gizmos. Next the buick supercharger.

Once its done I'll add it to youtube

  • Even today that car still looks pretty awesome, inside and out. Wish I had one.

  • I agree. Truly distinctive!!

  • I can't help but wonder two things:

    1. If, after airing this commercial, did people try jumping their Toronado's?

    2. Was the creators trying to go for an airplane feel with that odd looking gear shift?

  • I'd drive that...

  • I bought last week (dec. 2008) a Toronado 1986from the first owner it is like new. Comfortable car and American design, my daily driver now.

  • Amazing how a little editting can make a piece of crap look cool!

  • Great design, cool digital dash, a great American mainstream car indeed.

  • Had one in 90 (86 Toro)... caught on fire at Kroger while I was shopping! It was beautiful... before the fire, of course!

  • lol rather have a buick regal or any g body car that year, an they ripped off the tail lights of the buick century lol

  • In fact, the Buick Century only had the full -width tail light from the 88-89 model year onwards, although the design ended up being much nicer than the Toronado`s. Still, the Oldsmobile came out first.

  • Fuck japanese cars!

  • Back in those days cars designs were cool. America used to produce one of the most creative-looking cars, with cool tailights, grilles, etc. Granted, the Big-3 makes much more reliable cars today, but their styling is clearly aimed at European and Japanese competition. They need to bring back those cool AMERICAN looks to cars. Chrysler has done it with the 300 and Challenger and Chevy's bringing back the Camaro. Thank goodness.

  • Very well said, man. Couldn`t agree more.

  • @superauctionstar The designs were cool but were poorly executed. The CRT displays in the Riviera and Toronado for example were prone to burn outs and malfunctions. Simple needle speedometers and knob controls are much better.

  • you notice they never show the car landing, it damn sure isnt a happy ending.

  • it landed

  • Yeah nowadays seeing a car like this make such a daring Dukes of Hazzard jump like that is just a joke. Well, at least to me it is.

  • My mom has an 84 oldsmobile toronado that she has owned since 1999 and until now runs great. No check ups or nothing(except of course oil changes), still running strong and i still see many miles ahead of it the way its been treating us.

  • Rare car! Very futuristic when it came out.

  • isn't this the car that had the QUAD 4 engine.

  • No it was not. That was the Oldsmobile Calais and the Cutlass Supreme that used the Quad 4. There was a concept vehicle of the Toronado from that era that used a supercharged or turbo charged Quad 4. It was only a concept.

  • classic!!!

  • i owned one of these! Awesome car! i owned it in 2004-2006 and never once did i havea problem. Oldsmobile quality, i sold it to a guy who is still driving it!

  • I had one of these as a rental car once and I will say that it was really underrated, but I liked the looks of the previous Toro better.

  • fuckin EPIC

  • It was used in the last Death Wish film with Charles Bronson.

  • This was the Toronado that was used in the movie Gleaming the Cube, right?

  • Architect-turned-vigilante Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) drives a '87 blue Toronado in Death Wish 4: The Crackdown.

    and...

A last gen toronado is used in the final chase of the 1989 movie Gleaming the Cube. At one point, the right door is ripped off and the voice alert system keeps reminding it until the end of the chase.

  • its been many years sinse I watched that movie - always thought he drove an 86 Riv - guess I better go and find out for myself
