Measuring Gauge

Thanks for the video but I seem to be having trouble reading the gauge instructions. For instance, it'll say 16 sts + 17 rows = 4". Now my question is, how do I know what stitch to use? Please help!

@latindansa - Gauge is always measured in stockinette stitch unless stated otherwise.

why don't you start from the edge? when you figure out how many sts per inch, is that what you start knitting?

@cheezymouseful - You don't start from the edge because edge stitches are distorted and you will not get accurate measurements.
