  • Eric love your videos, do you have a good idea how you can flush an automatic transmission at home???

  • I spent over ten years as a software engineer. I debugged sofware and hardware systems.

Debugging a car problem takes all my skills I learned over the years to get it right - that's not including watching videos on youtube.

I think auto mechanics/techs are highly underrated in this society.

  • hey eric, love your videos man very helpful. iam new to the trade. iam a second year apprentice and i have a quesion about a 1995 nissan 300zx n/a. when the vehicle is cold it whines when u start to drive once it is warmed up to operating temp it stops but you can still hear it very fainly while cruizing in a high gear on the high way. i tried cheeckin for noise in the diff but seems ok.... iam thinkin rear main bearing. ? is there a way to make for certain? thanks and appreciate your help.

  • @2011pasa Sometimes you don't know till you get in there but using the methods in this video should help you nail it down. Good luck and thanks for the comment.

  • I can't find mechanic's stethoscope so I decided to make one. do you think if I could make it from medical stethoscope?

  • @mmarkomann You could but a long screwdriver really works so you might want to try that.

  • @mmarkomann Sure, you could make one from a medical stethoscope, but those cost at least $40 and a mechanics stethoscope is way cheaper. I think mechanics have tough ears, though, since after a minute my cheap mechanics stethoscope is painful. One day I'll splice parts of each together to get the best of both.

  • @spelunkerd heheheh yes, tough ears...anyway I need something to help me locate the exact spot of some specific noise. I think that that is possible only with a good mechanics stethoscope. I am wondering what to use for the moving parts - hydraulic pump pulley or such things...maybe recording potential source of the noise using the microphone with enough directional selectivity...

  • almost as funny as pole crawlin' this made me LOL

  • @backwoodsctryboy Glad you liked it man, Pole Cralin is one of my favorites.

  • 1:14 LOL

  • 1:48 honda

    theres the teg

  • That's my biggest problem not know how to find out what's wrong. Very funny now stop staring me. Ok I'm going to tell my wife on you.

  • @1967800 That is also the most important part of solving a problem, if you don't know the cause it's impossible to repair. BTW parts replacement is not a 'normal' part of diagnosis and should only be done if all other options have been exhausted.

  • Any suggestions to find noises coming from the dash? more precisely from there the center ac vents or the radio are.. something rattles. Of course if I stop the car and pull the dash off is not gonna make the noise anymore, right?..

I'm hoping you have some magic trick for this..

    Great channel!!.. keep it up!

  • @sazunike No magic tricks but check the area where the dash meets the windshield especially if you have had it replaced recently. For the most part noises just have to be tracked down though it can take some time with some of them so be patient and keep trying new things.

  • Cool i think i found it.. a stuck lifter.. it was not registering much from the head though.. was far more pronounced from the manifold leg above it. Figured out that the ticking was timed to the valve train and took off the valve cover

  • @RoberTastic Cool, glad you nailed it down, thanks for the update.

  • I have a ticking noise coming from the subaru ej22 engine/trans area that I can't pinpoint.. Might be the lifters or piston slap, but could be the trans, which btw seems broken now. could i disconnect the four bolts that hold the fly plate to the torque converter and run the engine without any risk?

  • @RoberTastic

    i mean the flex plate

  • @RoberTastic I don't recommend that, if it were me I would use the stethoscope like I show in this video to look around for the source.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

i'm trying but having no luck.. hope it's not a spun bearing.. would that register on the oil pain more than the top of the engine?

  • @RoberTastic Yes it would.

  • @LaloSS90 Such as.....

  • those stethascopes are cool.i dont have one but what i use and works well too is just a piece of water hose haha.im gonna try that long screwdriver i do have one so i may have some fun with it when i have time lol good vid.

  • @cagonesss The water hose or vacuum hose works too, in fact I wish I would have mentioned it. Thanks for the comment.

  • Your actually such a chill person, its nice to see people into the auto industry just for the love:) if you find the time check a 5.0 burnout fail on my page, any feedback is appreciated

  • @azazimi Thanks for the comment I really appreciate it. If I get some time I'll check out the video but if you send it to me I might put it on the FATR.

  • @EricTheCarGuy no problem :) how would i be able to send it to you?

  • @azazimi You can just friend me and share the video with me.

  • The chasis ear makes YOU the coolest kid on your block!

  • hey eric a noise from the trans is coming when i put it on gear can you give me some advise????

  • @123456789TheEdy Don't put it in gear. Just kidding. Is it an auto or a manual? Either way it may very well be something in the trans that would require it's removal to service or repair it.

  • Hey ETCG your videos are awesome but i have a question...

I have an old 89 jeep cherokee and I just recently replaced a fuel injector and the jeep is running fine but now there is a strange hissing noise

do you have any idea what this might be?

  • @brandondarr Vacuum leak would be my first guess. It's a good idea to put a little silicone lube on the 'o' rings when you install them. See the video I did on finding a vacuum leak to see if I'm right. Good luck.

  • first time i used chassis ears it was on a new chevy travese it had like 100kms on it, it was a rental car. they said it was from rf suspesion. hooked them up. lower rear control arm bushing. but it is a big one that fits over the rear bolt on the control. replaced it on warranty. it came back the next day same thing. hooked them up again, noise same spot. boss said retorque all to specs. same thing. then he said over torque with the air gun, noise went away.

  • @kenman1717 Interesting, sometimes repairs just work out that way but having the chassis ear helped a lot I'm sure. Thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy oh most definatly did they help, without them i probabaly would have taken alot longer to find the noise.

  • @kenman1717 If you would have been able to find it at all.

  • @EricTheCarGuy i own 95 ford ranger and it idles pretty rough,@idle its like 800rpms and occassionally bogs down with my voltmeter dropping ever so slightly, while sitting there with the clutch out i hear a little bit of knocking noise untill i put it in2 gear, theres also a slight squeek thats coming from the pulleys i THINK, i have no clue and everytime i go2a shop i feel like im being robbed i CANT find wt the problm is.i dont wannapay400$ to get timing fixed to find out trannys bad ne ideas?

  • @SWXranger1007 Well lets face it you have a very old truck that's probably seen a better day, perhaps it's time to prioritize and decide if it's a better idea to save your money for a new truck rather than investing on the one you have. I've seen this a lot and in fact I often advise people at a certain point their money might be better spent on a new vehicle, sucks for my bottom line but the customer has a better idea of what they are dealing with.

  • "maybe it's coming from the neighbor's car" LOL hilarious

  • i have to say you really make things interesting and funny. but yet your serious at the same time, and you know what your talking about. chassis ears are great, only ever used them a couple times, but they worked. a question, i noticed your stethescope had the clear tubes, mine has grey ones. everytime my boss wants the stethescope to listen to whatever i'm working on, he goes and grabs a set with clear tubes, he says they conduct the sound better than others. whats your thought on this?

  • @kenman1717 You've got me stumped on that one as I had not hear of that until reading this comment. The only thing I can offer is that those tubes are made from different materials that may conduct sound better. It could just be his preference though. Thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy that must be it. i've never had a problem, i can hear noise just fine with them.

  • awesome...the screwdriver works...!!!

  • @posernotricer It's not just for screwing anymore!

  • Hi Eric, I have a 2002 Camry V6, noise in the engine bay when i am accerating, but only under the "right" condition, first, regular use grade gas, second, the car has to be moving, and I accerate quickly. I have went to the dealer, and they could not find the problem. And the noise will be there for 1 or 2 seconds around 3k RPM. If it is idle, doesn't matter how much gas you give, there is no noise, and using premium gas, the noise will disappear too. Any advise on where to look for? Thanks.

  • @bigcat1986 That sounds like a problem with pre-ingntion that COULD be caused by an EGR malfunction, it could also be that your timing is off a bit but that is less likely in my opinion. Watch the video I did on Octane to help you understand why you hear the noise under load only, EGR is there to help eliminate this issue by allowing an inert gas into the combustion chamber it actually helps cool the mix to help prevent pre-ignition.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Thanks!! I will check the ERG, and timing also, since the belt has long overdue not on the milage part, but has has been there for about 10 years, and the car has only 53k miles on it.

  • @bigcat1986 If that is the case then the first thing I would do is replace the timing belt and see if the problem still exists. A loose timing belt can cause the engine to be out of time just enough to cause an issue like this, do this before considering other possibilities as age plays more of a factor than time when it comes to timing belts.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Indeed, that is what I am thinking too. 10 years is a very long time for a belt, even the milage is not there. Thanks for your expert advise. I will find go change it, hope can find some too time to do it.

Once again, thank you for taking your time to answer my question, and Merry Christmas.

  • @bigcat1986 Good luck, keep me posted and have a Merry Christmas yourself.

  • eric I trade my 97 truck for a 2003 dodge neon sxt, automatic with the 2.0 engine, now my problem is that when the engine is cold it does starts right up but for the first 30 seconds it idles bad and then change to a perfect idle, can you give me any idea of what that may be.

  • @TheLuispineda That sounds like a mixture problem which can be tough to nail down. Start by looking for vacuum leaks or air leaks in the tube from the air filter to the engine, if you find any repair them. If you don't find any it might be a fuel delivery problem or more likely an idle air control valve problem.

  • LOL! Zero dislikes! hahaha... you're good! :D

  • Ok will do Eric. I got to go to my local parts store anyway tomorrow morning to get that motor and some headlight restorer as Chris Duke from Motorz says I can use it to recondition the plexiglass windshield on my motorcycle. Thanks again.

  • @Michiganborn1969 Cool, good luck with the work.

  • Go figure I was about to order the window motor and it starts working again. Its developing a pattern (so far) it doesn't work during the warmest part of the day and this morning was 40 degrees @8am and its working during the coolest part of the day. Does temperature effect these kinds of components like that?

  • @Michiganborn1969 Based on my experience you probably need a motor, just to be on the safe side check to see if it's getting power and ground at the connector when you work the switch just to be sure, I use silicone paste to lubricate the window tracks. I think power windows are much easier to service than manual windows personally.

  • According to my local autoparts website they sell the motor & the regulator separate. Is the motor the only part I need? Also what best for lubing things inside the door or if anything needs lubing before I put thing back together? Thank you in advance Eric.

  • I hope I can do as good of a job at taking it apart as you did on that Tahoe head unit and not get the crickets when I'm done lol. I've taken a door panel off before on an 85 Toyota 1/2 ton to replace a window regulator but that was kinda easy b/c it had just crank windows and no power anything going to the doors. This GMC Jimmy has full power everything including heated leather lumber seats. Hope to get it all together ok. Thanks a million Eric.

  • Well it did it again this afternoon. I'm going to have to take the door panel apart and take my circuit tester & see if power is getting to the motor when I press the button. I tried banging on it several times and still nothing. I'll start in on it tomorrow morning. :)

  • @Michiganborn1969 You probably have a motor going bad, the brushes get old and you loose the connection. I would have a motor/regulator ready when you take the door panel off.

  • Good idea. I'll try banging on the door panel if/when it happens again but sounds like in the future I'm going to be pulling that panel anyway to more secure the connections, may as well lube all the parts while I'm in there.

  • Never mind Eric. Out of the blue it started working again. My woman & I were heading out to Wienerschnitzel and I just hit the button and it worked like nothing was wrong & I know I didn't have the window security button on. Just weird.

  • @Michiganborn1969 Electrical problems are often the result of a poor connection, in your case the trouble may not be over, I've often temporarily fixed such problems by hitting the door panel which put the motor in a slightly different position allowing it to work again.

  • Its the noise that I can't hear lol. I had my 00 Jimmy exactly 1 week now and already the front passenger power window doesn't go down. I'm listening real closely for the window motor engaging but not even getting a click. I checked the fuse & its ok since the fuse controls all 4 power windows. So I broke down today & bought a Chiltons. Before I start pulling the door panel apart do you have any suggestions where else the problem may be? Keys to. Good diagnoses. Thanks in advance Eric.

  • @EricTheCarGuy I have a 91 honda accord and i thank you very much for the great videos about almost everything about the accord, one question do you plan on doing a videos also for the 3rd generation 4runners? because i have that suv also but unfortunately i can't find anyone does the videos on how to's for that, i hope that you can give some tips and advice for the 3rd gen 4runner's..not that there's something wrong with my 4runner.. cheers :)

  • @richardallanjoseph I plan on covering lots of makes and models in the future as I plan to be doing this for some time. At this time however I can't just work on any car that I like I have to wait for the car to come in with a specific problem before I can make a video. Thanks for your comment and suggestion.

  • Just Wanted To Ask I Recently Bought mobil Clean 5000 But I Just Realized It Does Not Say Anything About High Millage Cars I Have A 96 Chevy Lumina 3.1 Do You Think It Will Cause any Issues? since its not specially for high millage cars ? Thanks a lot.

    ETCG

  • @rico313z In my opinion changing your oil on a regular basis is the best way to keep it's insides clean. I have however at times thrown a quart of automatic transmission fluid in with an oil change to help clean the internals, it actually works pretty good and is a lot cheeper than other additives.

  • Hey my car makes a rattling noise when i hit over 20 i think im not sure what speed. It sounds like metal cans ratling. I know its not alot of info but maybe you have an idea of what it is? 94 accord lx

  • @JFIdelH Check the exhaust shields, very common on that car for them to come loose after a while. I use hose clamps to fasten them up again.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Oh wow fast replies! x) Okay i will, well right after i google "Where are exhaust shields located in a honda accord" LOL

Ill check it if i have time before i leave to work. Thanks ALOT!(:

  • @JFIdelH The shields are fastened to the exhaust components themselves, pay particular attention to the shields on the catalytic converter as they are the ones most likely making noise.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Ohhh okay alright. Ill check NOW after it stops raining lol. My car kept overheating yesterday again so i was like WTF!!!!! and it was leaking too! So i started checking everything and it ended up being cause a stupid tiniest little hose! I ended up replacing it and voila! The guy that sold me the car gave me the idea of adding a toggle switch to the radiator fan so i could do it myself so im thinking of doing that

  • @JFIdelH but my friends had it wire to the wires and just ground so the fans would just tun on when the car is on and bak off when they key is out so you dont forget to turn the switch off. Hopefully i dont, i forget to turn the lights off or even turn the car off and take the keys with me half the time haha.

  • keep all these great videos coming. You are such a helpful guy....luv the stethoscope.

  • @tangerine12usa One of my favorite tools really, thanks for your comment.

  • ha ha noises.. i bought a 1999 tj jeep.. that the former owner was soo pissed off since he/dealer/local shop could not find the rattle.. i got it for next to nothing.. and every little bump it would rattly clunking sound... it took me over 2 week to find it..i was going crazy with the noise... it was the loose hood hidnge pins...

  • @y2kxj I should have mentioned that sometimes you can find loose parts by looking for orange dust where parts move, this is often an indication of where a noise might be. I suspect this was the case with the hinges. Good find BTW, great diagnosing.

  • I use to have a 2001 Escort ZX2 where I had to replace the IAC valve & it was located below the throttle body underneath the intake manafold between the engine & the firewall & like anything on that piece of crap car was a real mofo to get to. Being you have a Buick LaSaber you may have it easyer accessing the IAC then I did.

  • hey eric , i just had a friend put a tuneup on my wifes 95 buick lesabre (just plugs, wires, and fuel filter oil change ) it runs and revs fine but when at idle in drive the car now acts like it wants to stall. but when i turn the air-conditioning on it idles fine. i dont get to see the car till nightfall so i cant really diagnose the problem .... and im not a pro ..... whats going on here ?

  • @TheHoustonian25 I might be checking the idle air control valve. You might try tapping on it with the butt of a screwdriver to see if the condition changes, if it does then I would replace the valve.

  • Test, don't guess.

  • My GF has a great ear for strange noises. I crack a fart and try to Camouflage it with a fake cough and Immediately she points to my butt and says "I Heard that piggie wiggie". I swear she's got ears that perk up like a Doberman Pincher lmao.

  • @Michiganborn1969 Thanks for sharing, lol.

  • Great one mate !!! Love the new intro !!!

    That stethoscope roxxx !!!

  • @jasmenter Thanks for the great comment! Glad you liked it.

  • Our 2001 130K miles CRV has a noise. But I don't think it's an engine noise since it increases with speed and not RPM. I'm hoping it's just a tire noise. Pretty loud seeming to come from forward of the front passenger area. Tires are only about a year old.

  • @bowlingballout The first thing I look for when someone comes in complaining of a noise like that is the tires and I usually don't have to look any further. You could verify the theory by rotating the tires front to back to see if the noise changes or goes away.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

That's what I was thinking too.

  • A piece of wood broom stick about 2 feet long works well also but its a little harder to get in tight places

  • @madmike1981 Indeed it will, thanks for your comment and input.

  • Hey Eric have you had time to get that video up? Pressure test

  • @phazon1029 What video would that be?

  • @EricTheCarGuy That pressure test video, im the guy with the eclipse eating to much gas

  • Screwdriver Fetish There Eric. What happen to the Whips and Leather.lol.I got the same stethoscope without the end thingy

  • @mickeygovender I think your twisted, I like it.

  • True Dat Homey."Diagnosing A Faulty is the Key.Thumbs Up On the Vid m8."Stay Funny"!!

  • @mickeygovender Thanks.

  • your awsome hah

  • @clucku399 Your comment is awesome, thanks.

  • i love you eric!!!!!!!!!!!!!! very funnny!!!!!!!

dont ever stop making your car repair videos!!!!!!! very loyal subscriber here!!!!!!!

  • @TehSmartNewb I like your exclamation points. Thanks for the very enthusiastic comment, I really appreciate it.

  • Thank you for your input in this topic Eric and god bless .....

  • @malecco1 Thank you for the great comment, I really appreciate it.

  • Man! That's a scary looking stethascope, but agree I'd rather use that then try to find a 2 foot screwdriver.

  • @Michiganborn1969 Either one would work, you might be surprised at how well the screwdriver works.

  • Good stuff, people of earth! I've always used a long screwdriver. Never heard of Chassis Ear but now that I do, I'll have to check it out (Sears sells that too!)

  • @motorztv Yea, a chassis ear has been of great help when I needed it.

  • you mean i cant use a creeper as a redneck dyno ? wtf? i thought thats why it had wheels- funny video

  • @pico3423 You could, just don't tell anyone that I told you that you could. Wait, I did just make that comment public, I guess I should think these things through first.

  • Man I think I'd much prefer the stethoscope vs a long screw driver !! I cringe thinking about it getting caught up in a spinning part.. Another nice and informative video as usual Eric !!

  • @mixwell1983 Either one will work, I've used them both. You might be surprised at how well the screwdriver works.

  • Hi Eric, I remember when I used this tool before. I'm a marine mechanic that fixes main engines, diesel generator. This are giant engines so its easy to isolate the noise unlike small engines moving parts are very close to each other. Its cool that you have a stethoscope style tool. I used a long rod w/ a ball bearing at the end. Homemade but it works. Keep posting those videos of yours, its very informative and keep those humors coming.

  • @anton6jr You have GOT to send me a video or pic of one of those engines, better yet have me aboard so I can see one for myself, that would be cool.

  • Surprising how well you can hear through a screwdriver! Great tip.

  • @mazzmari Isn't it though? Physics, who would have thought it would have a practical use?

  • I have done the same thing with a broom handle.

  • @MrWalleye That would also work, thanks for the comment.

  • hey eric! have you ever used an ultrasonic device called the marksman? i've been thinking about getting one and want to find out if it is worth buying.

  • @superfootdan I have not used that tool, if you get one let me know how it works out, you have my curiosity peaked.

  • THANKS FOR BE SO POPULAR. FROM MEXICO JAJA

  • THANKS FOR BE SO POPULAR. FROM MEXICO

  • @pinponitoclown Hola Mexico! Thanks for the comment.

  • great timing eric i have to use a stethoscope today in my auto class!

  • @rleon1991 I love it when things work out like that. Thanks for the comment.

  • one of the things that make your videos very interesting and joyful is that you using a high definition camera. i sometimes want to only watch the good quality picture . keep up the good work ! .

  • @TeDuaMalakie There is something to be said about quality. I hope to get a better shop someday with better lighting and really take advantage of the hiDef thing. Thanks for your comment.

  • I like using rubber 3/8 fuel line too. That works well in a bind. I had weird noise from my truck once. Sounded like an alternator/ Pulley.. Nope.. Was a darn exhaust heat shield moving just the slightest bit... Sometimes you have to hit suspect stuff lightly with a soft mallet to find rattles/ vibrations.

  • @ghtowagon That is a great suggestion, thanks for the comment.

  • I've got a different kind of noise. In the past few months, (actually, right around after I pulled the fuse for my ABS in the hopes of getting rid of the pulsating brakes) I've noticed when I go over a certain type of bump, the back of my car sounds like metal parts are cluncking. I checked the trunk and made sure there's nothing loose back there. I also checked the muffler and it is on there firm too.

    *shrug*

  • @lrossi888 I think your noise is unrelated to ABS. I think you should lift the back and get a look for anything loose however just to be on the safe side. Keep me posted.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Yeah, I didn't think it had anything to do with the ABS just because I pulled the fuse. I may prop up the car tomorrow and see what I can find back there. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Is there any particular part or area I should be looking?

  • @lrossi888 Check the wheels for anything loose first, then look for thing in the suspension that might be loose like stabilizer links or something like that. Don't forget to check the exhaust too as this can rattle around from time to time too.

  • Another great video Eric! Why aren't you already on network t.v.?!? Move over Pat Goss!

  • @pookles15 I don't know, lots of people have been saying things like that lately thought, perhaps I should look into it.

  • Agh, another excellent tip to help me in the shop, thank you sir!

  • @AtomicDouche Your welcome, thanks for the great comment.

  • Lol. Great video!!! Teaching with humor is a talent.

  • @snaponjohn100 Well I have a short attention span so I treat my audience the same way and try to hold their attention. Thanks for you comment.

  • All smiles over here.(-:/>

Safety is fun when you teach it.

Great job on this video Doctor-E

    ~Cheers~

    B.Champagne

  • @Buchoass Thanks for your comment, I do try to keep it entertaining.

  • @Marshmallowrex To be honest I don't remember the exact spec but I think it should be somewhere around 30-40psi at idle with a steady needle.

  • You are just sooo silly. this video is silly

  • @Inuyasha11966 Yes, it is but I hope it's informative as well.

  • thanks eric i just bought a stethascope just like this one !! you can hear everything ... bearings going bad .... tons of stuff !!! i have plenty f long handed screwdrivers and i did not put two and two together damn im dumb ...... by the way YOU CAN GET THIS STETHOSCOPE FROM SEARS !!!!!! that and alot of other great diagnostic tools

  • @TheHoustonian25 Yea, it's not that expensive either, a great diagnostic tool as well to be sure. Thanks for your comment.

  • Best video as always

  • You have some of the best tips and damn that's a cool monitoring tool!

  • Great video Eric.

  • Awesome tips Eric.

  • If you need privacy, try painting your window black lol

  • @Begbucks The shop came that way when I moved in, there is a restaurant right next door and some of the tables are right outside the window.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Eric, haha thats even better!

  • he so wat happen with u and acura???and i liked the old hair do as well LOL!!! was it because u were driving the shit out of that NSX???=D

  • @maddluckz Long story really but it ends with me becoming ETCG so I would say that's a pretty happy ending.

  • @EricTheCarGuy wats etcg???LOL

  • stay dirty my friend...

  • Learned this back in college from a physics professor that had a 400k mile old Tercel, and yes it really does work pretty well.

  • LOL..you are funny. Thanks for the video. When i was using my screw driver for diagnosis, my cousin started laughing. He have no idea.

  • @cooljestin1 Yes, we must be tolerant of the non-believers.

  • How about a "shop cleanup day"?

  • @seanseanseanseansean Are you saying my shop is dirty?

  • So a colleage of mine pulled his fancy stetoscope, and I have to admit ,without that thing I would've never figured it out. Anyways great video and keep'em coming.

  • Eric I wished you had uploaded this video this morning before I went to work. A lexus is 300 came in with a freaking random screeching noise on the left front. This thing was straight out of a movie. Oh yeah, the lowered springs with the colorful, adjustable suspension, the cross-drilled-crack-every-winter-rotors, the auto zone duracrap pads and my personal favorite "high performance" b. joints from China. The owner had replaced everything but the lower c. arms, and guess what? the arm was toast
