No, it isn't mentioned in the film, but there's nothing in the story that disallows you to hold this in your mind as you continue to watch.

What Peter Jackson et al. have achieved is incredible. In writing the screenplay they've got rid of the hardest edges of the story, while staying faithful to its soul. It's still brutal (and exquisite) but with modifications. This doesn't detract from the story though. You'd think it would...I was so so nervous it would have...but it's just perfect.
