Last scene on podium: Kim Newcombe. Only time I've ever seen a pic of him. Like Jarno, a trained engineer/rider. I was supposed to interview him at Anderstorp '71, for a 4-page spread, but he was slightly hurt and back in Berlin working on the König boxer-4. As I began racing MX in Sweden we never met. Got himself killed, leaving a wife and kiddies. Johnny Dodds was supposed to ride the bike, not Kim, but Dodds realised it was not the right bike for him, like Findlay, hoping for an MV ride.
I was 11 years old, when my mother told me, that Jarno Saarinen had died. In school we boys cried. He was such an idol...a good person and fantastic driver. Long Live Jarno !
I also remember the feeling in 1973, 9-years old boy, when WE WERE THE BEST, IN FINLAND! -sorry, JS is the citicen of the world. -Same thing, lost of great life - greatest drivers, same as later H Toivonen in rally and G Villeneuve and A Senna in formula - And later, almost, Mika Häkkinen, the same kind of unlucky for great championshpis driver but still alive, lucky?
They say, the brightest star burns half as long, and there have been few stars that burned as bright as Jarno. Its pointless wondering what he may have acheived had he been around through the rest of the '70s, but what a treat it would have been watching him go head to head with KRsnr.
Another amazing clip. Saarinen is one of my favourite riders ever. I'm still going through all the stuff you've posted up so far.........A real treasure trove.
Awesome video! Where did you get it? Please post more. Saw Saarinen win Daytona in '73 and Agostini win in '74. You gotta like the bikinis for Saturday practice and the winter coats for the race. 8^)
unfortunately the legendary salzburgring will never return. at least at wc
