I've heard that one way to extinguish a chimney fire is to shut the draft off and shove wet newspapers into the stove.....can anybody comment on that? anyone with experience with that?
@cdawg4391 probably the best thing to do would be to direct a fire extinguisher (preferably CO2, if you have one -- NEVER SPRAY WATER IN THERE!!!) up the draft, and also try and cut off as much of the air as possible to deprive the fire of oxygen -- because a chimney fire is like a giant blowtorch. (needless to say, 911 should have been called by this point)
@Genners111 ok good thanks. I would shut off the draft but good idea about th CO2 spraying. I also burn anti-creosote material to avoid the situation shown in the video.
Thats nothing compared to the chimney fire I had! It wad like a rocket taking off. The house was cracking and vibrating. The fire was white it was so hot. Sparks were going off in all directions.
@Charles310872 how often did you clean the chimney before that. how often did you burn in it? wood stove? softwood/hardwood? An oldtimer down the road had a chimney fire...would've thought he'd know to check/clean it.
Wow.... I think it was my husband who put that comment up not me - and I'm sure he was meaning the comment jokingly.... What a fricking nasty word !!!!!!!!
@TrashCanJim A warm stove instead of a hot stove may be why you're getting so much creosote build up. It also depends upon what type of wood you burn. We burn mostly ash and elm and only clean ours once a year.
I mostly burn oak and maple and some nut trees wood, and it is seasoned fer like up to like 2years i just run stove to cool so my skin doesnt melt off in the house its a vermont castings airtight large stove.
@TrashCanJim We're going to purchase a much more efficient catalytic woodburners before next winter, and I will have to pay closer attention to creosote buildup. I have a friend with one of the catalytic stoves and he intentionally gets it really roaring every day or so just to keep the flue clean.
Why weren't you on the phone calling 911?

Close all air inlets to oxygen-starve the fire.

When you are inside your house and the soot catches on fire like that how do you know when it ignites. does it roar loudly or something ?
800dozer 2 years ago
It sounds like a TRAIN bearing down on you And you should shutdown all the dampers then go outside and tape so the fire will die quickly

If the flames ever got behind the siding inside the chimney, which is usually stainless steel, your entire house could easily go up in flames.
