While a jet engine may be very loosely defined as anything that produces a reaction or jet of air, a ducted fan does the same and is not considered a jet engine. In reality the common use of the term jet engine describes a gas turbine as is in use today and since Whittle/Ohain invented them. Anything else is not a comparision worth making.

Whittle did not run a turbine until April 1937. Ohain had sucessfully run a gas turbine engine burning hydrogen as fuel in February 1937, generating 250 pounds thrust at 10,000rpm.

My information shows however that his engine was not proceeded with beyond the initial testing and flight of the 178 and Junkers and BMW took over with somewhat fragile axial engines. Whittle's engines developed by Rolls-Royce grew into a whole family of turbojets and turboprops until more effeicient axial engines reached maturity.

Yes. true . I'd offer that it was more similar to a sort of afterburner for a piston engine driving a ducted fan.
I doubt any increase in thrust from the burner made the engine run any faster the way a turbine engine does of course.
The Coanda, at best a quasi-jet, crashed on takeoff, honest persons will discover. The Heinkel 178 was the 1st jet to fly. The engines in the XP-59 were copies of a British design. Lockheed had proposed an axial-flow turbojet and a canard planform aircraft for it in 1939, but the Air Corps wasn't interested.

Early cars were slow, impractical, noisy, unreliable and nothing more than toys for the really rich. Most people at the time scoffed at them and thought they were never going to replace a good horse. Many of them looked like motorized carriages, but they were still cars.
Hughes H-4 Hercules really didn't "fly" either. Still was a pioneering work.

The English Gloster Whittle which was commissioned by the Royal Air Force and was built to prove the jet engine designed and built by Sir Frank Whittle was the first fully funded turbojet to fly. It Flew in late 1941 but was deprioritized in favour of prop powered planes that could be build in much greater numbers.
@tomburley no it was not a rocket plane. it was a jet aircraft. it used suction in the front part of the engine and airflow out the rear....rocket planes don't use suction as far as i know

A turbo jet required both the compression of air and the injection of combustable fuel to be ignited to generate the thrust.....Coanda was just full of compressed air!!
The metalogy needed to build turbine blades was developed by Frank Whittle - this was the key to the jet engine reliably operating at high temp.
@tomburley im not familiar with aircraft typer of propulsion but i didnt say coanda's aircraft was a turbojet. yes it did crash, coanda never anticipating the flames that would pop out the front. then engine injected fuel in the airstream and....whatever...there were no officials when the flight happened. anyway just search wikipedia for coanda 1910. they also call it a jet aircraft. peace

German Pabst von Oheim built the first working turbine jet engine. His engine ran before Frank Whittle's engine.
Coanda's thermojet was powered by a piston engine that added fuel to the thrust of an impeller and gained a little boost .
The first jet engine aircraft to fly was the Heinkel 178, in 1939, later followed by the twin jet engined Heinkel 280 in march 1941
In may 1941 the first allied jet Gloster E.28/39 Flew.
The Germans introduced the world first production jet fighter the Me262
