  • This is one of the greatest things I've seen in a long time. I honestly hope they still do this!

  • What no personal protective equipment...well there goes someones eyes, fingers, face...

  • I like that 2.5" gauge 4F. Its at 4:50, running parallel to the type of loco I have- a 3.5" gauge "Maisie" Atlantic

  • I love this clip.

  • Who's the guy at 0:31?

  • @EastwoodBirds

Robert Alexander Baron Schutzmann von Schutzmansdorff (if wikipedia is to be believed), or Bob Symes as he seems to usually be creditied. To my delight it seems he's still knocking about today.

  • @EastwoodBirds your dad?

  • @eatshit740

    Um no.

  • Beautiful video

  • Very positive video. I miss this good years

  • my great grand father opened this track.

  • why tha f*ck is this recomended for me !?!?!?!? it says its because i watched this watch?v=BLizcnwO8mo

  • i dare say that class isn't at any of my local institutions of learning of any level...what a shame, art is being lost

  • My grandad has built 9 5 inch gauge locos in total

  • I am glad to see he is alive and well and thanks to those who set me straight I have never been so happy to be corrected. Un Saludo a todos....

  • I loved this thanks for uploading

  • Jigen7490.

Thanks for the info but I think you're talking about the music that starts at 4.23 - Take 5 that was made famous by Dave Brubeck. I'm wanting to know about the music that starts at 5.37.

  • @Mike11913 oh that, if you find the video or the full credits it generally has them I will take a look on my copy for you k

  • What is the music used at the end?

  • I asked a couple of months ago if anyone knows the music used at the end of the film - but no luck yet.

If I find out what it is I'll let you know.

  • @Mike11913 That would be Paul Desmond's Take 5 buddie

  • @Jigen7490 I know it is Take five, but it does'nt sound like the standard Brubeck/Desmond version of Take Five that you get on most jazz albums.

I'm prepared to stand corrected, but I think the version of Take Five in this video was most likely recorded by the musicians of the B.B.C itself

has anyone got any other ideas?

  • @DANWOODHOUSE sounds like it, its a pitty if thats the case as it would be awesome if we could get a copy of a full version

  • It would have made my day if the two men at 4.55 would lift their hats when they passed each other.

  • wow that a turbin in the begining?

  • @CGiordano464 yeah charlie

  • @chappybolo how does htis random peson know my name? haha

  • @CGiordano464 lol

  • what type of steam loco is the % inch gauge one?

  • @WhyAyeMann 5" guage is very expensive and its and out door can be electric or steam or oil powered.

  • Does anyone know what the ending music is?

  • I just keep imagining one of those trains derailing with one of those guys riding it. :P

  • @olishant What's the likely hood of that?

  • @NewController01 I really wouldn't know, but I'm guessing the risk is not very high. However it would be pretty funny to witness. XD

  • This is so cool :D

  • Superb stuff. ModelWorld got me into modelling. I remember sending for the book which came with a load of scale model plans.

Anyone know what the outro music is in the clip?

  • Bob Symes is a God what do we have now, spotty teenagers..this guy lives for what he is presenting..i am sure he is dead now R.I.P. A walk down memory lane that iiiissssss soooooooo good...

  • Agreed an excellent clip shame that the BBC don't do this sort of thing much anymore

  • NO! Thankfully good old Bob is still very much alive, and passionate still about trains. Check out his channel on YouTube!

  • hes not dead, arlaban. he was interveiwed last year.

  • @arlaban11 i don't think he is, checkout star walkers bob symes garden railway.

  • Thank you!, Brings back so many memories of the golden age before the young became "Sophisticated:"! I used to love this show, I wonder if they have the complete series on DVD?

I remember the Beeb used to do a lot of shows like this, I remember one where they built a mirror class dinghy!

  • OH MY GOD! Cant believe ive found this clip. My grandpa used to have this show taped on video that i watched all the time as a kid. Brings back sooo many amazing childhood memories. Thank you so much for posting it.

  • I am in love!

  • i remeber watching this with my dad when i was little great vid 5*

  • where can I find a book like this to build one?

  • Wonderful clip! Bob Symes was a hero!

I remember this from the 70s. The models seemed so out of this world for being so scale. I still wish I could have the skills to build my own models from scratch.

  • Hi All ,the north london is still there !

i drove round it today ,some of those blokes are still members ,that workshop burnt down some years ago .and the trees along the back straight are so big now the track has had to be rerouted . as for evening classes . i couldnt find any round here but willesden colledge were going to run a course but didnt get enough intrest..young poeple today are to engrosed in play stations to want to go out !

  • @donkey2lathe that's too bad I visited but it seems that there is not much action anymore

  • fantastic series i had the book that accompanied the series with plans for a r/c leander class frigate sheer magic !!!

  • Last I read about the north London mob was it was all still there, I went for a whole summer 1987 and still remember Model world the first time shown. Tracks are growing while evening classes and creativity are shrinking for our young people. I still enjoy this hobbie. Thanks for uploading.

  • I'm loving the way the bloke with the lathe carefully lowers the guard then looks straight round it!

  • 1.45 lol

  • thanks for uploading this, superb,I wasnt even born then,I was still swimming around in my dads sack about then.funny how a 33 year old film clip knocks the spots of "the railway channel",I bet the line has been bulldozed and built on by now,no more eve classes either.

  • What version of Take five is this?

it sounds a lot different from the normal Dave brubeck version

  • QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

  • Bob Symes! What a legend!

  • Yes, High Priest of Anorakism

  • I loved this show. Have you got the full series ?

  • I have one of those steam engines, it's a 3 1/2'' gauge Atlantic

    "Maisie". Great vid!

  • mental mate , gawd knows where you found the clip, when I was an apprentice I always ended up making bits for the Normanby Park (Scunthorpe) crowd. AND told top secret government job .

    cheers

  • Serious clag!
